So I'm in the market for a new (new to me) car. I've pretty much settled on a Mazda 6, and I keep looking at this one online- http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/635402820/overview/. I know very little about cars in general, so thoughts, warnings, suggestions anyone?

I like their SkyActiv technology if you can get it on the 6. We have a 3 and get 36-40 mpg with it.

I think it may be time to trade in my 07 Audi a4 quattro for something new.

I'm thinking a gently used car 3-5 years old. I want another manual (which seems to be harder to get these days), sunroof, and AWD or RWD. Ideally after my trade in my car payment will be around the $300 range.

What are my options? I haven't really been paying attention to trends in the auto industry lately. I was kinda thinking a VW. Actually test drove a jetta tdi back in the winter while my friend car shopped and wasn't really that thrilled with the performance, I was expecting a little more from the 230 ftlb torque.

Most VWs are FWD, so it's odd for you to mention that brand after stating you want AWD/RWD. And any VW's AWD system will be inferior to the Quattro system you had in your A4.

Do you want something with more performance than your Audi? Or less?

More luxury? Or less?

Yeah i didn't realize VW didn't have any quality AWD systems. Ideally i'd want performance to be on par with my A4 but I could tolerate some decrease. Honestly 85% of my driving is driving for business trips (to visit a power plant or vendor), 10% recreations (a day in the cascades etc), 5% if I need to move something too bulky/heavy to bike. So as much as i want another BMW or Audi i'm having some trouble justifying the cost (though my monthly mileage would cover a significant portion if not all of a car payment).

I'm not sure if this fits into your budget, but I may have found just the car for you. 2009+ Acura TL SH-AWD.

305 hp V6
6 speed manual
more advanced AWD system than Quattro
considerably more reliable and less expensive to maintain

It's somewhat of a rare bird however, and you might not like the styling. But that ticks all the boxes for you.

hmmm yeah i was exploring about going back to a Japanese car. Thanks for the situations. From my car shopping in 2008 I just remember the selection of manuals being very limited. I actually went with Audi vs. BMW because I got frustrated on the BMW salesmen continually trying to sell me on the more readily available paddle shifter autos they had.

One of the bigger performance factors I look into with a car is the suspension. My A4 has the s-line package which gives it the S4 suspension which made it incredibly fun to drive over "faster cars".

Thanks for the suggestion though does look like that is a hard car to find.

But panamera turbo... wife wants one... trying to see if once i find one if its going to be one of those 6k brake pad cars with a 2k oil change or if the maintenance will be relatively normal.

FFS man, it's caymAn!!

And I don't personally know much about them, other than that they seem fairly reliable and will easily put out around 430 hp. However, one of the very active posters over on http://www.s2ki.com has a 2006 Cayman S with a turbo kit. Been boosted for a long time, and he tracks it. I dunno if you're registered over there but I can get you his username and/or contact info.

Ah, now I see you changed to the Panamera. I believe the biggest problem with them is catastrophic coolant hose failure, where the main coolant hose that connects to the engine block blows itself off the connection. I know it's a problem with the Cayenne Turbo, and I'm pretty sure I've read about it for the Panamera as well, though a quick google search yielded nothing.

[Edited on July 29, 2015 at 11:22 AM. Reason : I'd still suggest a Cayman turbo instead ]

If it's not equipped with PCCB, brake pad replacement should be cheap. Probably not the rotors though, as I'd imagine they're pretty large on that car.

rotors is fair... i mean they're big brembos i just want to make sure it's not some rare size but since the charger has them now i'm sure the rotor size isn't much different. (i'm not saying they are the same i'm just saying fatass cars with brembos are becoming more popular)

anything else... does it eat coils like VWs used to or anything weird ?

How often do DSG clutches need loving?

The clutches in the Porsche PDK transmission are supposedly good for the life of the vehicle. I find that hard to believe, and haven't looked into it online (since it doesn't apply to me).

If you want to price check consumables, or any potentially pricey maintenance items you can check out these two online sites for 2 dealerships that sell OEM parts at wholesale pricing. These two resources are where I go for any parts I need.

http://sonnenporscheoemparts.com/

http://www.suncoastparts.com/

One's in CA, the other in FL. CA one has incredibly reasonable shipping rates but takes forever. Flip side, FL location ships quickly but charges near criminal shipping rates. Go figure

^^^ 255hp wasn't a ton in 1993. 84, 22 year old vacuum lines. It's a terrible idea unless you plan on immediately building/replacing the motor

Yeah the three rotor isn't really mandatory but the single turbo swap pretty much is.

Same for supras sequential turbos from the mid 90s aren't the best idea.

Theres a company that "restores" Fds and sells them for about $17k with a 1 year warranty. I've thought about getting one since they have a timeless body and its a fresh motor... Prices for a clean Fd is going up, and I can see them going for stupid prices like the NSX is doing now.

Yeah I recently discovered that company. They're local to Raleigh, and have 3 currently listed for $16-19k if I recall correctly. One is even a CYM R1 model, which is extremely rare (350 imported to US).

Isn't it Eccentric Performance? I believe the guy is NCSU related. His shop specializes in rotary rebuilds, so I'm assuming he finds Fd's in decent shape (probably with issues or non running) and flips them.

i don't think a single turbo is really looked at as a bad thing since the vacuum system on the sequential system can be directly linked to blown motors.

I miss my 944. It was a fun car and I wouldn't think twice about a 951. I'd drop $15k on a turbo S before I would an Fd. Porsches will always be sustained, especially the 944 line. I don't know much about the Fd market, but I can't imagine the market supporting them is as big.

Fortunately/unfortunately, the c6 is everything I was trying to make the 944 to be. So... in that regard, I'd want something completely different if I were to look at buying another car. Like maybe a hardtop MR2 or Lotus Exige. I'd consider an AW11 if they weren't all overpriced...

As you stated, the 944 will always be supported, guaranteed, by Porsche in fact. Porsche maintains stock for all OEM parts, for all models they've ever made. As long as Porsche exists as an entity, they'll sell you OEM parts for your car.

The FD will probably have strong support as well, but it could grow more difficult to source parts. Remember, this car was built until 2002 outside of the US. And in a few years JDM FDs will be legal to import to the US.

I've heard MR2 spiders are easy to source with bum engines. Seems people online are always talking about installing the Celica GT-S's 1ZZ into a rolling chassis and having a viable Elise alternative for roughly $10k.

So apparently Boxster LS swaps are a thing I had no idea it would fit back there. Seems like a great idea, given how cheap Boxsters are (mainly b/c their original engines are almost as bad as Mazda's rotary).
