I don't see what the problem is with that house coming down. Yes it had some architectural significance but they tried to sell it for 8 years with no success. The current owners are the heirs of the original owner. The family built the house and I believe it's a free country, they can do as they please with it. 3/2/2013 11:03:32 PM |

The problem is losing the places with significance that make this city interesting and worthwhile rather than a vast sea of sameness. Yes, it's a free country. No, the owners can't really be blamed for lack of effort. It's still unfortunate. 3/2/2013 11:06:19 PM |

Fair argument, however if it was really that interesting and worthwhile someone should have been able to come to the rescue in 8 years. 3/2/2013 11:16:12 PM |

$3.3 million is the problem. House in question was in the Raleigh Country Club neighborhood and sat on an enormous lot. It's hard to raise money for preservation in the first place, especially hard when it's that kind of money. And, as they said in the article, folks buying a multi-million dollar home expect certain things, which this home did not have. It would have taken exactly the right buyer.
I do sort of wonder why they wouldn't have been willing to subdivide the lot and leave the house on one of the plots. That would have made it much less difficult to find a buyer as the price would have dropped precipitously. 3/2/2013 11:20:48 PM |

Some degree of conformation is expected of anyone that chooses to live in a city. Urban environments stifle creativity, or at least confine any form of experimentation to a narrow, acceptable range. Japanese society is a good example of this, but it is inevitable in any dense population. Architecture, especially, should be heavily regulated and dictated by societal norms since citizens have no choice but to view buildings as they pass by. In the case of this strange home, such draconian measures were unnecessary; the free market saw a blight on the landscape caused by a trouble-maker and moved to eradicated it in less than one generation.

OC Bar and Grill opening next week in Oberlin Court.
Menu looks decent, and if they aren't lying about using fresh ingredients it could be good. Might add to the parking headaches of that shopping center, but great for residents and those who can walk there.

Tried it last night. They were sold out of a lot, but what I had was good. I'd be more inclined to grab lunch there than dinner.
Also, our waitress had no idea what soju was when I asked why they had sake instead. 3/5/2013 5:16:33 PM |

Quote : | " RALEIGH — Architects unveiled the latest design for Raleigh’s new Union Station late Wednesday, adding a rooftop terrace and moving the main vehicle entrance to Martin Street.
A standing-room-only crowd got its first look at drawings of the $60 million Amtrak station, set to open in 2017 in the old Dillon Supply Company Viaduct building in downtown’s Warehouse District.
Architects from the Raleigh firm Clearscapes said they envision the building as a mixed-use gathering space with restaurants and shops. Downtown residents and visitors could join train passengers in admiring the skyline from a rooftop restaurant. A high-ceilinged waiting area would take up much of the building." |

They got that shit at Rebusworks.
Except it's better because there's WRESTLING. 3/11/2013 2:37:59 PM |
WolfMiami All American 8766 Posts user info edit post |
^true, rebus works has at least one or two trucks every saturday. And at least every few months there is a gathering there with more trucks, beer, and often gouge wrasslin!
Fayetteville St. has had at least one "rodeo" recently with at least 10 trucks, and there are a few others I can remember. You just have to pay attention and stop bitching about what durham has. 3/11/2013 2:40:43 PM |
thegoodlife3 All American 39304 Posts user info edit post |
actually, I have attended nearly every single one of the Reebus rodeos, and while fun, they are absolutely nothing like what I went to yesterday
those are a neighborhood thing, and yesterday was a city thing, with that city fully embracing it
so yeah

Really I just wanted to mention wrestling. The Rebus stuff is fine, but is tiny compared to the Durham rodeos. The whole damn city practically shuts down for that shit.
With that said, I'd rather not wait in line for half an hour, so I don't go. 3/11/2013 3:20:19 PM |

i always think food truck rodeos will be awesome, then i go but because i'm human can only have food from one or two trucks so then I'm kinda disappointed.
and i don't think the new train station needs a parking deck, if ridership increases enough where its a problem add a circular shuttle to the nearby parking deck and make long-term plans for a new deck at that point. 3/11/2013 3:59:46 PM |

Raleigh has plenty of options, again, I went to a huge food truck rodeo on Fayetteville St. within the last 18 months. Cherry bounce, sparkcon, and countless other street festivals, Rebus works, there are regularly 3-4 trucks @ CAM, and plenty of others. Just sick of the "we need to be more like durham" arguments.
To be honest, the huge events just lead to huge lines. Part of the charm of foodtrucks, for me at least, is finding them at their location, short lines, and quick service. 3/11/2013 4:13:42 PM |

i like foodtrucks at things, or hanging out downtown when i want some food, but a food truck rodeo has the same appeal to me as a mall food court3/11/2013 4:19:18 PM |
