So, you have 2-1 odds. You can easily call with a weaker hand. 1/7/2009 11:54:24 AM |

true. but depending on the size of tournament, 9 or 10 BB's can be a decent chunk of your stack to commit in the later stages. I guess it just depends on your style of play. Most of the time I would rather save my chips and either try to outplay someone or pick a better spot rather than leaving it all to coinflip situations. 1/7/2009 1:13:26 PM |

Anyone have any interest in a Vegas Trip Feb 5-9th? 4 nights at the Flamingo and round trip flight, cost is $334 total. I will be playing poker the majority of the time, just looking for a wingman to cut down on costs. 1/8/2009 11:33:09 AM |

need some input on this hand. I was trying to raise to 1200 preflop but my timer was getting low and I couldn't get it right. whatever. I figure he has a small pair or KQ, QJ, etc. I just hate cbetting this flop bc it's almost inevitable he will check raise all in.

I learned this lesson a long time ago. Don't put all your money in pre-flop if you can help it. I mean, you're gonna lose eventually, even if you are a huge favorite everytime (which on a couple of those hands, you were only slightly favored.)
It really used to bother me to fold a hand preflop when I really felt like I was ahead, but I came to learn that in the long run I can just outplay them after the flop and not have to committ my stack.
Think of it this way, even if you are a 79% favorite to win every hand that you push all-in preflop, you are NOT favored to win 3 hands in a row. 1/17/2009 3:23:45 AM |

^^ That is not very good thinking. I understand what you mean about "outplaying" people postflop, but not wanting to get it in PF (aside from maybe the early levels of a tourny/sng) a strong favorite is entirely results oriented and you're missing a ton of value. 1/17/2009 1:18:42 PM |

I am not saying I never want to get it in preflop. I would almost NEVER throw away a hand where I was an 80/20 favorite to win, I was just giving those numbers as an example. What I would do, and very frequently do is fold very big hands preflop, even when I think I am way ahead. Or fold marginal hands preflop even if I think or no I am slightly ahead.
Just as a reference point, what would you do in the following situation.
5 people left in a tourney, 100,000 total chips. You have 20k, as do 2 other people. Another guy has 5k, the leader has 35k. Blinds are 500/1000, you look down at QQ, and pop it up to 2500. Everyone folds except the BB, who reraises to 6000. He says you can look at either one of his cards, which you do, and it is a K. What do you do, assuming you have no read on this guy whatsoever, and basing your choice only on probability.
Same scenario as above, except you have KK and the guy flips over an A. Is your move the same? 1/17/2009 3:02:24 PM |

^^your thinking is very flawed. I recommend you read a book on tourney strategy, as it will open your eyes to a lot of valuable information.
also i'm never folding qq just because i think the playe has ak. Take your equity and you'll succeed in the long run

lee8431 I am not sure who you are talking to there. Your arrows indicate JLaird but you kinda seem like you are talking to me.
All I can say is this. I do very well in tournaments, both online and even moreso in real life. I do not just think the way I play works, I KNOW the way I play works. I am not saying this to sound conceited or anything like that, it is simply a fact. I have made over $10,000 online playing no higher than $10 buy-in sit-n-gos and $50 cash games, with the occasional low-limit MTT thrown in the mix. I have no idea how much i have won in real life, but it is way more than that, and unfortunately with my wife and job, I don't even get to play that much (I don't think I've played in over a year).
That being said, to say you would NEVER fold QQ just because you think your opponent has AK is ludicris. Would you fold JJ? 88? 22? All those hands are very similar in percentages, with QQ being about 56% and 22 being 52%... the percentages drop as your chance of being counterfeited increases, but that is the only difference. If you want to play 4 hours of a MTT just to risk your game on a coin flip, be my guest, but it's not the smart play in the long run.1/17/2009 7:51:33 PM |

^^^^Hi
I wish I would have known you were going! I haven't been in forever. I have made it out a few times since that time we went with you.
Next time I will be sure to let you know. 1/17/2009 7:54:31 PM |

^^I agree with your logic, usually the only time I go all in with a coinflip situation is if I'm getting short stacked in a MTT and need to "double up or go home" or if I think I've got good fold equity against the player I'm re-raising. 1/17/2009 11:51:02 PM |

I have to agree with Jim on this one. I can't count the # of times I've folded AK in the past few weeks only to see some guy flip up 55 on a ballsy play. I can outplay these guys postflip, so I'm not trying to put a 50 bb pot on a coinflip. 1/18/2009 2:27:08 AM |

yo david i was wondering how often you play those large buy-in games? and how much you actually have in your PS balance to be comfortable playing those games 1/22/2009 3:20:40 PM |

My account balance is low at the moment, but I've heard you should have between 50-100 X your avg tournament buy in for large mtts.

i have been playing for years but never seriously online. i put $40 in a PS account a few years ago and just played once a month or so. my balance always ranged between $20-$80 recently i have decided to actually play seriously and have been playing 1-3 tournaments a day. i had a bad run about 2 months ago and my balance was down under $10. last week i played in a $2 tournament and finished 2nd and won over 200. then i played a $3 and finished 7th and got about 110$. then felt ballsy and played a $10 and won $50 (should have been more but my AK got runner runnered for a jack high flush....) so now i have almost 400 in my acnt i feel like for right now i should stick to $5 BI games until i get over 7 or 800 but i would eventually like the ability to play higher BI games 1/22/2009 6:11:09 PM |
