Quote :
"Among the first classes he was “assigned” (as he phrases it) was a Swahili course, an “independent studies” class taught by the department chairman, Julius Nyang’oro. “There wasn’t any class,” McAdoo recalled. “You sign up. You write the paper. You get credit. I had never seen anything like it.” He never once met his professor. Despite the strange circumstances, he researched and wrote the paper. It was that paper that got him in the trouble with the N.C.A.A."

can we put this on a billboard?

man that guy really hates the NCAA so much that he forgets to mention that while McAdoo, God bless his soul, may have been steered to some easy no show classes he also tried to pass off someone else's work for his own. If the NCAA is a bully as this article opines it's a limp wristed sissy slapping bully for the sactions unx received.

It doesn't matter now if McAdoo is a victim or not. There is now "proof" that the academic counselors directed the athletes to these no show, no prof, paper-only classes. This should surely get the NCAA back to Chapel Hill. But it probably won't happen

Signing day at Carolina, where the football and basketball teams all sign the papers that tutors wrote and turn them into Dr Nyang'oro.

I was grabbing lunch and had 99.9 on the radio right when Fedora came on to talk with David Glenn. Holy crap, that guy really grates my nerves. I couldn't listen for more than a minute because the douchebaggery was overwhelming.

I believe Doeren is scheduled for 2:35.

NC universities panel to weigh in on UNC scandal
Feb 7, 2013 7:36 a.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—A panel looking into how the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill allowed and responded to an academic fraud scandal is getting a chance to speak.

Part of the governing board for the state university system weighs in Thursday on the scandal that led to the resignation of Chancellor Holden Thorp and departure of football coach Butch Davis.

The scandal involves dozens of courses in UNC-Chapel Hill's Department of African and Afro-American Studies where instructors did not teach, grades were changed and grade reports were faked over more than a decade.

An investigation led by former Gov. Jim Martin and aided by consultants says there's no evidence student-athletes gained more than others from the academic fraud that began in 1997.

Yeah so they still insist that this ONE PROFESSOR just decided ON HIS OWN to produce fake no show classes for anyone and everyone that wanted to take them and NO ONE questioned the practice for over 14 years.

NC State dragged into it now. We all knew this was coming:

Quote :
"As a result of the scandal, the panel said Thursday it will make several recommendations to help other UNC System schools to avoid similar issues. "

Yeah, if something like this happened at God's alma mater(even though there really isn't a problem, right?) it must be going on at other schools. Now UNC isn't just overcoming adversity, through them the other NC schools will be better!

Fuck UNC

It is just unfathomable how obvious this shit is and yet they continue to say "nothing to see here no big deal" If you went up in front of a real judge and tried to say this shit he would not only laugh at you but probably double your sentence because someone that stupid shouldnt be allowed to interact with other people.

SACS accrediting agency looking into shady practices and will possibly put the school on probation. Sounds like these guys are actually serious about integrity, but I won't get my hopes up.

From the N&O and in response to a suggestion that they bring graduates back to legitimize their degrees:

Quote :
"“I think it would be a huge challenge,” said Thorp, who added that he doesn’t know the number of graduates who took improperly taught African studies classes."

What? Isn't this what Gov. Martin and the Baker Tilly Firm were supposed to get to the bottom of and what they were so focused on that they didn't look at plagiarism? I might be assuming, but it seems that they have the list of students enrolled in the 200 (or so) classes but do they really not know how many graduated?

This is really what I have been waiting on, accreditation. If they were going with the academic scandal over the athletic scandal, then surely they new this would have to come up eventually. Maybe they thought they could make it go away before their accreditation renewal came around and that the SACS would not bother with it till then. It may just be that it will be easier and/or quieter to deal with than the NCAA. I guess it probably would have come up either way though.

"Thorp said an independent analysis of UNC-CH’s new academic procedures was not available at the time the commission’s board met in December. That study, by Baker Tilly, found no gaps in implementation of about 70 policy and procedure changes at UNC-CH in the aftermath of the academic scandal, which involved a disproportionate number of athletes."

Hey, Thorp... If you were hoping to use the Baker Tilly report to bolster your claims that you've found and fixed the problems, I would suggest against it, especially since they basically had to retract it...

Quote :
"The outside SACS team will report its findings to the commission board, which could take action in June. A university could receive a warning, or worse, probation. After that could come a loss of accreditation, which likely would mean the death knell for a college or university, because it would no longer eligible to receive federal financial aid dollars. A shutdown would be inevitable.

I wonder if this would just be accreditation for just AFAM, or for the university itself? I know that different departments and schools have separate accreditation from the university. Just hope this wouldn't extend to any grad schools that had nothing to do with this.

Fuck em. If they're claim is that it's not an athletic issue (even though it clearly is) but an academic issue then let them reap what they sew. Maybe potential loss of accreditation will make them change their tune.

I'm not holding my breath because they're not going to lose accreditation or admit that it was athletics driven.

Since there's so much focus on the NCAA's take on the academic vs. athletic debate, maybe this is a good time for SACS to make a statement from an academic perspective about the priorities of schools. Putting someone like unc on probation could send a few shockwaves to other athlete factories masquerading as institutes of higher education.

maybe some new evidence will come out that some of their players sold sneakers, then they're sure to get a 3-year postseason ban for all sports
