yeah, it's tedious...measuring powder out so precisely--sometimes adjusting just one kernel at a time with a trickler to get an exact charge.
It would go a lot faster if with a multi-stage press, or just accepting small inconsistencies in the powder throws...but that would negate a lot of the purpose of hand loading in something like a Creedmoor target rifle. 12/2/2018 7:30:32 PM |

I use an RCBS Chargemaster for my accuracy loads. It trickles out the next charge while I seat a bullet. 12/2/2018 8:31:56 PM |

yeah we were using a manual trickler and beam balance scale (calibrated when we started, with known calibration weights). We loaded 60 Creedmoors for me, and 30-40 for my friend, with one of us weighing powder while the other seated bullets.
He has an expensive electronic scale, accurate to +/- 1/10th of a grain, but he said he think he's more accurate with the method we used. I'm inclined to believe it--his beam scale was pretty sensitive--we'd adjust quantity by a kernel or two of H4350 at a time, sometimes!

I've verified the charge master against my beam scale. It's close enough. It gets calibrated with check weights every time I use it. There are some pretty cool homemade setups with automatic tricklers and optical sensors on beam scales that do the same thing the charge master does, but even more accurately.
I'm sure I'm the limiting factor in my accuracy, not my reloads.

yeah...the other thing is that this guy shoots out to 1000+ yards, and honestly, about the only time I shoot my Creedmoor is when I'm shooting as his guest, because shooting that rifle at 200 yards or whatever is boring and pointless.
He isn't as crazy into it as some. He's not annealing all the brass or sorting the brass based on weight, reloading cycles, or water capacity or whatever...but he's a little more finicky than a lot of people who aren't shooting big distances. 12/3/2018 6:28:27 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
i made a little annealing machine. mainly just to reduce neck splits and increase brass life. never sorted brass by weight or volume. the longest range down here is only 280 yards, so i stick with old military rifles with iron sights and 22 caliber stuff, and rimfires. golf balls at 280 with the .22-250 is fun for a little while.
and a 44 mag lever rifle loaded with big, slow plated bullets and trail boss powder. holy shit that is fun. everybody is anticipating the blast of the 44 and all you get is a little pop and a big thud on steel.

Just make sure you're home when they deliver them or have FedEx hold them at a location and go by and pick them up.
CMP is the safest way to buy a Garand. You know exactly what you're getting. The Garand is so much fun to own. Everyone at the range always wants to shoot the M1. 1/10/2019 8:43:32 PM |

What's the going rate for a nice M1 Garand? 1/10/2019 10:53:41 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
No, CMP can ship rifles to your door. They have an exemption from the federal law.
Depends on how you define "nice". Manufacturer, serial number, and condition can make the price go anywhere from sub $1k to $10k. I normally recommend the CMP Special Grade for folks looking for a shooter and they're $1250. They have some new parts, so they aren't as collectable. 1/11/2019 6:53:56 AM |

I got a "rack grade" for 650 and a "service grade" for 750
We will see what kinda shape they are in when they show up.
You kinda have to jump through some hoops to get in. Join a club on their list, prove shooting experience, and send them appropriate identification.
If both can be made to go boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, PING I will be stoked

This whole grown adult thing makes buying gun stuff a lot more fun when you can afford the good stuff. I’m hoping to get my new hunting rifle back from the gunsmith soon, it’s going to be mostly used for whitetail within 300 yards but I’m going to use it for long distance hunting training as I want to get out west sometime and there’s a 1000 yard training facility close by.
Rifle is a Tikka T3x Lite in 6.5 CM, cutting the barrel down to 18” and threading it for my SilencerCo Omega with a direct thread 1/2x28 mount (not enough meat on the barrel for 5/8x24). On top I got a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 F1. I haven’t mounted the scope yet but holy shit is it worlds better than my piece of junk Vortex PST. I can’t ever buy cheap glass after this again. 3/8/2019 9:57:41 AM |

the only difference with a shorter barrel is a little less velocity 3/8/2019 1:25:35 PM |

I should be able to plink out to 1000 just fine and hunting under 600 yards the bullet is moving fast enough to expand and penetrate. I won’t be taking 600 yard shots on deer anytime soon and likely never but I do plan on taking long range hunting classes to improve my skills.
Plus with the suppressor you gain a little of that velocity back. Not all of it but it’s more than just shooting an 18” gun from what I’ve heard from others who did the exact same thing as I’m doing.
Next on the list is a custom 300 WM in an XLR carbon chassis with a proof carbon barrel. That’s going on the back burner though because I got a lot of shooting I want to do before getting another expensive gun. 3/8/2019 5:14:47 PM |

also does the right or left handedness matter on a shotgun? im left eyed 4/3/2020 3:51:23 PM |
darkone (\/) (;,,,;) (\/) 11610 Posts user info edit post |
Left or right handedness only matters depending on the shape of the stock and how you like the cheek weld to be. I'm right handed and left eye dominant. I just close my right eye and hold my head a little further over the gun. If you can learn to shoot left handed, more power to you.
I'd get a Stoeger over under unless you're looking for something to pass down to your kids. They're reliable and inexpensive. I shoot skeet with one. It shoots straight and it's always gone bang even after 1000+ rounds.
If you want an heirloom gun, then it would be a question of if you want to stay over under or go semi auto. For me, that means do I want a Beretta semi-auto, or a Browning over under? You have to remember that there's no upper limit on what you can spend so just be pragmatic about what you want and need in the gun.

WTF are you talking about? 4/4/2020 11:15:47 AM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
if you're shooting left handed, certain guns eject the shells across your field of vision as you shoot them. I'm left handed, so I much prefer the ambidextrous design of my browning pump that ejects underneath compared to an 870 that ejects the shells about 6 inches in front of my face. I bought a left handed Benelli SBEII to address this issue, but otherwise I hate buying left handed guns.
Crosseye dominance is different from the left-vs-right handed discussion. When 1985 mentioned he was left eyed, I'm assuming he meant right handed. If he could learn to shoot left handed, I think it would make things a lot easier. Trying to hit a flying bird with one eye closed sounds difficult. 4/4/2020 6:07:48 PM |

Yeah Im right handed but left eyed. I do shoot left handed though to compensate, but ive always only shot with right handed guns.
With a bolt action rifle, thats really annoying because i have to reach over the gun with my left hand to move the bolt. I was wondering if that really mattered with a shotgun - the field of vision is a good point, it would be ejecting across my face. 4/14/2020 7:42:59 PM |
