Why do you need to ask permission? A heads up to avoid social awkwardness perhaps, but there's no need to ask for permission.

one of my best friends approached me with a similar situation. he had started talking to this chick i used do date. so as any good friend would do he told me that him and her had been talking, flirting and what not and things seemed to be escalating. i had no problem with him dating her but my wife absolutely hates this bitch so I told him that if they did get serious there was no way in hell that my wife and I would hang out with him and her together. he decided to put the brakes on. good friend!!

One of my best friends asked for my permission to ask out an ex of mine. I used to be head over heels when I dated the girl (my best friend knew that) and we went through a lot of tough shit.

However, I had broken up with her and even started dating someone else. I told him it would be a little weird and that he shouldn't expect us to go on any double dates soon. I said that in a perfect world all of our ex girlfriends would move into a convent, but I wanted him to be happy, so I gave him my blessing.

They dated for a while and were extremely serious, but ended up breaking up (and I did a lot of "counseling" through the break-up because I knew her so well)...and we're still bestest of frrannnnsss!!

^^ i have no problem with them dating at all. when i dated the chick it was just casual for me but she wanted it to get more serious, things got weird, i broke it off, it was messy. anyway...the problem really isn't him dating her, its that it would be awkward for all of us to hang out. well basically, that just would never happen.

I dunno, I guess that my friends and I have such similar personalities that I couldn't see it ever happening. I mean, if I broke up with a chick then there had to be a reason. And the same reason we broke up would most likely not make her compatible with one of my friends.

Now if it is just a chick I smashed, that's different. I have a friend that we call "Leftovers", because he has hooked up with a lot of the same chicks that we have......after we have. He even married and had a kid with one of them....they are now divorced.
