According to twitter, graham supposedly had 47 points and 11 3s in some game last night.

And Alex Johnson will be making his decision today (and he gave Hodge a heads-up tweet.)

he's Canadian, but i can look past that. also he shot 37% from 3 at Cal State Bakersfield. i don't know how much of an offensive facilitator he is, but a warm body to spell Zo is fine by me.

Quote :
"NC State has been looking high and low for a point guard for next year to add depth for the backcourt. The search ended Sunday.

NC State has picked up point guard Alex Johnson, who is a graduate student from Cal-State Bakersfield and eligible right away for the Wolfpack. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Johnson averaged 13.3 points and 2.4 assists at CSBU last year, and he made 79 3-pointers. He scored a season-high 26 points in back-to-back games against UC-Riverside on Dec. 22 and Colorado on Jan. 2. He went 10 of 21 from the field and made six 3-pointers against the Buffaloes.

The Toronto native visited NC State on May 18 and has his former traveling team coach Ro Russell living in the area. Johnson also considered Florida State.

"Johnson is a very quick and skilled player, who can really handle the basketball and create off the dribble," Russell said. "He has really good shooting ability. I coached him in AAU in Canada, and since he's gotten to Cal-State Bakersfield, he has gotten bigger and more mature."

CSBU went through a coaching change this offseason, and Johnson decided this past week that he was ready to make the move to another college. He graduated Saturday, allowing him to take advantage of an NCAA rule to be eligible right away at another college that offers a graduate school program that his previous school didn't have.

"His knowledge of the game and decision-making has improved, and he's a very good 3-point shooter," Russell said. "He had 20 in the first half against Colorado this season. He just put on the line against them. They had nothing to lose."

Russell said opponents started to game plan its defenses around stopping Johnson toward the end of his junior season.

"He had very little help to maintain that effectiveness," Russell said.

The Wolfpack's need for a point guard intensified after freshman Ryan Harrow transferred following the coaching transition. Fellow freshman Lorenzo Brown was the only player remaining on the roster with point guard experience.

"Shortly after Harrow transferred and they had a big need for some more guard help, and they also lost Javi Gonzalez to graduation, they needed another guard," Russell said. "Johnson was in a unique situation where he was graduating. He could transfer to another school for his master's and be eligible right away.

"I met the new coaches there at NC State. They asked if I knew of any point guards that were eligible to play next year, and I told them about Alex."

NC State did its due diligence on Johnson's career the last four years at Cal-State Bakersfield, and the match proved to be a great fit. Johnson will help serve a bridge until class of 2012 point guard Tyler Lewis of Lewisville (N.C.) Forsyth Country Day arrives.

Russell also thinks Johnson will help in the leadership department for the Pack.

"He'll help the morale of the team and be a good leader," Russell said.

Awesome awesome get for Gottfried, we get a 3 year starter who can create his own shot and handle the ball. If he doesn't work out we aren't stuck with a scholarship in the future. With the slim talent pool available for this coming class, this is a perfect fit for us and will bridge the gap til the 2012 class comes in.

Gottfried is having an amazing offseason

i agree. Gottfried is not wasting any time putting his stamp on the program.

i like the way he does things so far, as vague as that sounds. the real test will be when he coaches. i am anticipating seeing his style after watching that atrocity we've had to see the past 5 years.

if he runs a full court press within the first 5 minutes of a game (hell, if he ever runs a press period), i will be impressed.

jesus yes. I have been wanting to see a legitimate press for years. Tired of seeing our guys get their shit fucked up in the press but we can never manage to do it to other teams.

Cool so now we have 11 true scholarship players.

I'm guessing we look something like this:

1-Brown/Johnson
2-CJW/Raymond
3-Wood/Harris/de Thaey
4-Leslie/Painter/de Thaey/Harris/Howell
5-Howell/Vandenburg/Painter

[Edited on May 22, 2011 at 9:44 PM. Reason : Howell big enough to start at 5?]

I am hoping that Brown can turn into Jarret Jack this season. Alex Johnson can come in to give him some rest.

I think Johnson could be more than just a backup. I wouldn't be surprised to see our crunch time lineup have both him and Brown at the guard spots, with Wood or CJW at the three depending on if we need offense or defense.

I would not expect to see Brown at the point for long, as mentioned, that is not his natural position and if this Johnson kid can come in and be the point, which I would expect given that is his natural position and his experience, that is better for us. We needed 2 ball handlers, we now have 2, but that doesn't mean we have to play one or the other, now we just aren't fucked if all we had was Brown and he got hurt.

lorenzo would argue that his natural is PG...i've heard him say multiple times that he prefers to be a distributor of the ball.

and Wood would rather shoot 20 threes a game

Doesn't matter what he wants. Matters what coach wants. Unlike the previous regime.

i don't think you can put johnson on the court for significant minutes until he proves he can do it. yeah, he started at some shit school in a shit conference, that doesn't mean he can be an effective ACC PG. a few minutes to give Brown a breather, sure, but i'm not ready to put him in for much. trying to find his game logs, looks like he didn't do a whole hell of a lot against the tougher teams they faced.

I'd be okay with Johnson taking over eventually. Hopefully he can go ahead and move to NC this summer and start working out with the team. Maybe even play in the Pro/Am tourney.

I wouldn't say that, b/c i have no idea how he's going to handle ACC competition. I imagine we'll see him and Brown on the court some together, but I'd bet that Zo will handle the majority of the mins at the point, especially early in the season.

Personally, I think Brown looked much more comfortable at PG than 2G last year. He sure looked like a more natural PG than Harrow or Javi.

Maybe it's been said, but is CJL at the 4 a definite? Seems like with Vandy coming on strong (somewhat) at the end of the year, we could go to a big lineup at times.

I think positions in CBB matter very little. The key is too have the best five players on the floor, with the only real requirements being at least one guy who can handle the ball and one guy who can defend the paint. Everything else is based on matchups. Watch the NBA playoffs if you don't think the archaic notion of five separate positions is going by the wayside. You have point guards, wings and bigs now. Thats it.

I don't know either. But reading stuff that coaches have said about him impresses me. Natural leader, smart heady point guard, bounced back and had a strong season after sitting out a year with an injury.

And I watched a couple of his game clips over the weekend, and he looks solid: good handle, smooth stroke from outside, muscular build, even took a charge while defending on a fast break. I don't expect him to be Ty Lawson for us, but given the circumstances w/ the coaching change, if he outperforms Javi Gonzalez, I'll be happy.
