PI!!! http://packinsider.com/one-on-one-with-pg-alex-johnson-transfer-from-cal-state-bakersfield/

Quote :
"We had the opportunity to catch up with post-grad transfer PG Alex Johnson who will have one year of eligibility left when he gets to Raleigh. The 5'10 point guard may be small in stature, but he'll be filling in for new head coach Mark Gottfried in a big way after losing senior PG Javi Gonzalez to graduation and sophomore PG Ryan Harrow to transfer.

PI: Can you talk a little about your recruitment coming out of high school and how you ended up playing at Cal State Bakersfield?
"Yeah, well in high school I was overlooked probably because of my height. I played for the AAU team Grassroots Canada and my coach there who I'm still really close with- Coach Ro Russell- told me that Cal State Bakersfield was looking for a point guard so I visited out there and really liked it. They were kind of in a unique situation too because they were transitioning to division 1."

PI: What was your time at Cal State Bakersfield like? Do you feel like playing there helped you mature as a player?
"Most definitely. It was a real eye opener for me though because of the speed of the game. I improved a lot while I was there thanks to the coaches. They really pushed me and sometime we were at odds but I knew they just wanted to push me to my limit to be the best I could be. That kind of helped me turn from a boy to man. Also, at the beginning of my junior season I hurt my knee and had to miss my junior year. That was really unfortunate but might have been a blessing. I was actually able to sit out that year and really learn the game. I was always a very fast point guard that just liked to go-go-go and after watching that season I learned a lot about knowing when to push the pace and when to pull back a bit."

PI: How did you find out about the opportunity at NC State?
"Again, Ro Russell was the guy who came up and talked to me after my Junior season about transferring. I knew I had one more year but he told me that since I was graduating that I could go play anywhere and not have to sit out a year. I had been watching a lot of March Madness and seeing my friends like Tristan Thomson play in such competitive leagues and felt like that's where I wanted to be. Coach Ro Russell talked to NC State and they were looking for a point guard for this year and he said he had one . When he told me about it I was really interested."

PI: Which coach was the lead on your recruitment to NC State?
Coach Lutz. He's who I have been talking to and he just seemed like a real genuine guy. I did my homework and saw that he was really successful at Charlotte. So I came down to take a visit and I liked it a lot. The opportunity was a real blessing. I'm a religious guy and it just feels like everything fell perfectly into place for me here. "

PI: What type of role do the coaches see you having at NC State?
"Well I'm a true PG and I know they really don't have a true PG this season, but Coach Lutz and Coach Gottfried told me that my destiny is in my own hands. They were real with me and straight up and told me that they're not guaranteeing me a starting job or anything. They told me that there are 3 guards and that it's just about who works hardest and gets the job done. I know from my time at Bakersfield that you have to work for you spot and to earn your minutes so that's exactly what I'm going to do."

PI: What's your plans now? Are you headed to Raleigh this summer?
"Yeah. Well, right now I'm in Cali still. I'm going to stay here because I'm about to graduate in about a week. Then I'm going to just take some time off before I head to Raleigh at the end of June for 2nd semester summer school. Then I can get in there, meet the team and get to work.""

Was @ the RBC center today for a company meeting... saw Larry Harris trolling strolling through the hallways... Didn't think he was associated with the university anymore?

i think he was pulled over for suspicion of DUI, then he flipped his shit and got pepper sprayed. so it could be a combo of the two.

i think the only time i've seen Harris smile in the last 10 years is right after one of the Brown to Vandy alley oops last year

every other time he looks at the camera like Doaks looks at Dexter

[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 11:07 PM. Reason : or Ricky looks at Trevor and Cory]

Quote :
"Raleigh, N.C. — A Raleigh police officer who arrested a North Carolina State University basketball coach won't face charges, police said.

Assistant basketball coach Saint Lawrence "Larry" Harris accused Officer R.W. King of using excessive force during an April 4 traffic stop. Harris was charged with speeding and resisting an officer after police said he was traveling at 41 mph in a 25-mph zone in the 800 block of West Morgan Street..

Police said Harris refused to follow the officer's instructions, and King was forced to use pepper spray.

The Raleigh Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit investigated Harris' claims and determined they were unfounded.

Harris has spent the past 10 years as an assistant coach on the N.C. State staff, including serving as associate head coach last season, according to the university's Web site."

I think the word on PP was St. Johns for Harrow. (I guess now they may have another PG transfer so it may be UGA)

I think pete strickland is headed to George Washington and LH is headed to Rhode Island

According to Zagoria, that other PG transfer won't happen now because his former HS coach is on the SJU staff. So that might be a legit option now for Harrow.

Yeah, MoMo from AZ was going to St Johns...heard that fell through because apparently Maryland is looking at trying to get him(crap)....so Harrow may be back in play at St. Johns, who knows. MoMo was trying to get back to the NY area because his grandma is sick.

I realize families can be close, but man, AZ is in a great position and he would've been the starting PG...hard to throw that away...grandmas pass...its life.

Do we need a general NC State Basketball thread to put all this unrelated stuff in? This would be separate from the credibility watches, recruiting, and game threads.

^ I hope for his sake that he doesn't get recruited over and ride the pine for the bulk of his 3 years, but I think most would agree that it's going to happen. Not to mention his fragile psyche combined with Kentucky's rabid fan-base seems problematic at best.

can i say this now? Harrow is a pussy. his issues will not be solved by transferring. if he wants a "best friend" coach, he may find one. but in the long run, he needs to be pushed, not coddled.

http://www.kentucky.com/2011/05/26/1753172/point-guard-harrow-picks-kentucky.html

Quote :
"UK recruiting: Point guard Harrow picks Kentucky

Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari has lined up another top point guard. But UK fans will have to wait until 2012-13 for this one.

North Carolina State transfer Ryan Harrow told Scout.com Wednesday night that he has picked Kentucky.

"I just felt like they had everything that I needed as far as me getting better and me reaching my ultimate goals," Harrow told the Web site, referring to Calipari's string of high draft picks at the point guard position.

Harrow averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists as a freshman at N.C. State. He chose UK over Georgia, Louisville and Texas, according to Scout.

Harrow will have to sit out the 2011-12 season and will have three years of eligibility at UK.

The 6-foot-1 160-pounder out of Marietta, Ga., was a key component of a top-five recruiting class last year for the Wolfpack. But Coach Sidney Lowe was fired after a losing season, and Harrow decided to go elsewhere.

Having to sit out a season might be a good thing for Harrow. Most analysts see incoming point guard Marquis Teague as a 2012 NBA Draft pick, and his departure would leave UK in need of a new floor leader. Rodney Purvis, a top point guard in the 2012 class who is considering UK, posted on Twitter Wednesday that Harrow's decision won't affect his. "

if Ryan acts like he did while at State (and before coming here), then those Kentucky fans will lay into him...he better hope he plays decent or they will ride him hard.
