Quote :
"One of Skinner's most famous and interesting experiments examined the formation of superstition in one of his favourite experimental animals, the pigeon. Skinner placed a series of hungry pigeons in a cage attached to an automatic mechanism that delivered food to the pigeon "at regular intervals with no reference whatsoever to the bird's behaviour". Whatever chance actions each bird had been performing as food was delivered, was strengthened, so the bird continued to perform the same actions:

One bird was conditioned to turn anti-clockwise about the cage, making two or three turns between reinforcements. Another repeatedly thrust its head into one of the upper corners of the cage. A third developed a 'tossing' response, as if placing its head beneath an invisible bar and lifting it repeatedly. Two birds developed a pendulum motion of the head and body, in which the head was extended forward and swung from right to left with a sharp movement followed by a somewhat slower return. ("'Superstition' in the Pigeon", B.F. Skinner, Journal of Experimental Psychology #38, 1947 [1])
The experiment might be said to demonstrate a sort of superstition. The bird behaves as if there were a causal relation between its behaviour and the presentation of food, although such a relation is lacking. There are many analogies in human behaviour. Rituals for changing one's luck at cards are good examples. A few accidental connections between a ritual and favourable consequences suffice to set up and maintain the behaviour in spite of many non-reinforced instances. The bowler who has released a ball down the alley but continues to behave as if he were controlling it by twisting and turning his arm and shoulder is another case in point. These behaviours have, of course, no real effect upon one's luck or upon a ball half way down an alley, just as in the present case the food would appear as often if the pigeon did nothing -- or, more strictly speaking, did something else."

this is not abrams first foray into a tv show that keeps viewes guessing
this is not his first time planning a show seasons in advance
this is not his first time with a rabid fan base that is willing to claw at each other and make pictures declaring some people "Above the cloud" and "below the cloud"

i mean, why do normal people tape this show as they watch it

What's obvious is that Desmond has esentially MADE the "Lost crew" his replacement. Now that Desmond peaced out, those folks are stuck punching the numbers unless they grow the balls to just let it hit 0 and watch nothing happen to them.

^ Absolutely. Which really supports the thought that no questions are being answered b/c lots of things are just "not what they seem" to begin with. Clearly Desmond misrepresented himself, as did Jin, as did Michelle in the pit, etc.

The entire show is an trial on the crowd that watches it. This has PSY 200 written allllllllll over it.

i don't understand why people watch this show.

it's almost as bad as 24, where in 30mins to one hour nothing considerable happens.

infact nothing happens so slowly that it's like nothing happenedto begin with.

I was wondering what you guys were talking about green numbers on that dharma industries website. I was looking at it in firefox. It didn't work in there. When I opened it up in IE, I actually saw the second animation after you click on the login or whatever.

I wonder if the other 6 sites are on the island or close to it. Desmond could know a lot of stuff about the island if the guy that was there before told him about it. Desmond could know the location of one of the other test sites and he's going there now.

i found this from http://www.lost-forum.com/showthread.php?t=16097

they claim that Jarold and Karen (The Creators) are the ones that kidnapped walt at the end of season
they think that Jarold and Karen and all the people who worked at Dharma are actually "The Others" and are monitoring the island.

here are the pictures:

^^ good theory

i think all of that plot, about the dharma and all that is kinda moot, as in, for me it doesn't further or change anything. fact of the matter is he's there, we won't know what happens until hurley probably doesn't type in the numbers, and the plot just needs to....progress. i think we've only gained a couple hours of knowledge in the past three episodes.

jesus, it's almost like 24.

you know the producers have said explicity that we will find out "why the plane crashed" in this season, implying that it was something other than just "turbulence"

perhaps callusion between the island others and/or anna-lucia? something about the phone call while talking to jack, MAYBE?

more than turbulence.

This is insane.

The title of the book in front of the Orientation film was The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

http://www.turnofthescrew.com/

I'm sure there is a ton of additional stuff on the site, but I quickly noticed two things:

1. First line on the site - "This Saint Louis University PhD dissertation, published in 1991, surveys the criticism of The Turn Of The Screw from the novella's publication to 1980". 1980 was the same year as the copyright on the film.

2. This paragraph from the 'Culmination' section may add some depth to the boat where the dynamite was found:

The word screw, Bengels recalls, was also used to mean "the propeller of a boat," and this usage ties together a number of images--Bly as a ship with the governess "`strangely at the helm'"; Flora's "`boat building'" at the time of Miss Jessel's first appearance; the "`depths and possibilities that [the governess] lacked resolution to sound'"; Mrs. Grose's desire "`to sink the whole subject'"; the image of Miles, at the final confrontation, "`standing at the bottom of the sea and raising his eyes to some faint green twilight'"; Miles's possible innocence, which is "`confounding and bottomless'"; and her reference to her "`sick swim,'" which suggests that she is "a captain whose boat has sunk" (324-325).[i]

I can't get enough of the Turn of the Screw connection. The following poem was pulled from turnofthescrew.com

This could end up being a prophetic statement for this show.

"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time"
("Little Gidding" V).

Haha, that's true.

Perhaps though people are so perplexed by the nothingness, that they are wanting to see what's the cause of it. Like people getting in long lines, or something.

well, 24 has a pretty good reason for not making any progress...

each show is an hour in real time from the same day.
they can only do so much in one day.

you're still here and you're still talking about the show...

I like the show and everything, however I'm not going to all these websites and stuff. That's a little too much. I'd prefer to find out everything as the show tells me each week.
Remember, it is a TV show. I'd say over 50% of the viewers don't go online looking for secret hints or messages in websites.. We will find out everything in due time on the show.

I don't think the Others are the folks from the back of the plane. Remember, the french girl said they took her baby 16 yrs ago or something. (assuming she was telling the truth)

They're also kind of superhuman with their strength. Remember how Ethan beat the crap out of Jack and picked Charlie up off the ground in a choke hold. Also, that one guy single handedly beat the hell out of Sawyer, Jin, and Michael all at once.

The one thing im trying to figure out is that Ana Lucia girl. How did she know about flight 815 and that the tail broke off? Maybe the Others accepted her b/c she's a female...kind of like how they wanted Claire?

I definately dont care enough to go to any website other than this one to discuss the show. Even here a few fucknuts have pretty much ruined the thread.

People get into this kind of show because it lets their imagination tell the story. They just get new fodder every week to shape their interpretation. Looking for hidden meanings, poems, etc are just mental exercises. Its called entertainment

That being said I am totally up for Sawyer bitch slappin MRod.

About a billion other people I know have said Jin's 'Others' were the people from the back of the plane, so pretty please with a mother fucking cherry on top dont brag about 'figuring' that out. We still dont know if thats the case yet anyway.

Jin speaking enlish can NOT be a surprise to you people. You could see that shit coming a mile away.

I like the theory that the others are the people running some kind of experiment.

Even if its a social/psychological experiment there are still some uncertain things. You dont convince a pilot to be eaten by a hostile machine clould and left 30 feet up in a tree. You could possibly explain the voices in the forest away in this manner.

There must also be a connection between Russo and Desmond, because they are both worried about people getting 'sick'.

I'll say it again b/c it got lost back on page 23 somewhere I think.
Remember in the orientation film the man talked about some kind of "incident"
I think the incident had to do with the french woman and her crew coming to the island and screwing stuff up. They had to snuff out her crew and she somehow got away...But they don't want a similar incident to occur. Something like that...
And I have a feeling that there is a bigger twist coming regarding the hatch and all that. It just seems too obvious to be some kind of huge psychological test for the people in the hatch. Since when has anything been that easy to figure out. I bet something big happens if they don't hit the button.

no, im not kidding.

you really didnt have any kind of idea or suspision that he could speak english?

As soon as his wife revealed she has been taking lessons I knew there was no way they were just going to let Jin not know it or at least be able to speak it in some way.

Maybe saying you could see it coming a mile away is a little much. But I was fully expecting him to be able to do it, just didnt know when they were going to reveal it.

I always thought he'd eventually be speaking english. I suspected he was either hiding it, or would learn it from the folks on the island. They spotlighted him as a character way too much for there to be a permanent language barrier.

the problem with that is the ship crashed there 16 years ago, and the film is dated 1980 which is more than 16 years ago

It's not a mind game; the writers of the show are trying to throw you off. It sends out a signal; those numbers. This has something to do with "dharma"

# Hinduism & Buddhism.

1. The principle or law that orders the universe.
2. Individual conduct in conformity with this principle.
3. The essential function or nature of a thing.

It's not going to blow up the world or any crazy shit.

I suspected that for a while as well, but last season there was one episode where we could hear from Jin's perspective, and all of the english, save a few words here and there were completely clouded. I doubt the writers would create that large of an inconsistensy. Also, in the clip where he's speaking english, that doesn't even sound like his voice. Methinks that there's something else to the context of him speaking english.

Maybe it's a hallucination or a dream, or maybe it's another case of whatever fixed locke enabling Jin to speak english as well.

As an aside, if you add the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 it equals 108, which is a significant number in hinduism and buddhism, although i don't remember exactly why, and i don't have time to google it at the moment.
