Wake #1 in both polls. Duke should be given their schedules...

Anyway, just how dominant are the ACC and Big East this year?

According to the RPI:
The ACC has 4 teams in the Top 15, 6 in the Top 50 and 10 in the Top 100.
The Big East has 6 teams in the Top 15, 8 teams in the Top 50 and 11 in the Top 100.

According to Pomeroy:
The ACC has 4 teams in the Top 25, 5 in the Top 50 and 11 in the Top 100.
The Big East has 6 teams in the Top 25, 9 in the Top 50 and 12 in the Top 100.

Further, in this weeks coaches poll the ACC and Big East each had 4 teams in the Top 10, with the Big East having an additional 2 for a total of 6 in the Top 14.

^if you're going to use pomeroy as a source, you should at least point out that acc is ranked at the top followed by the pac 10, then the big east.

That on top of the fact that the pac 10 stacks up just as well as the acc and big east as far as numbers in the top 25 (with 4). this is especially impressive since they only have ten teams in the conference. and on top of that, they only have two teams outside of the top 100 (while the big east has four outside of the top 100). the acc only has one team outside of the top 100 (georgia tech ranked at 101).

That isn't true. The Big East has 6 teams in the Pomeroy Top 25 (and 8 in the Top 29). The ACC has 4, same as the Pac-10.

I'm not a Pac-10 hater. I live out here and a lot of east coast people talk down about Football AND Basketball out here and couldn't me more wrong.

-----------

Despite seeing the Pomeroy and RPI I still think the Big East is a much more difficult conference this year. UNC and Wake have 13 games left with 3 against Top 25 teams. UConn has 13 games left with 8 against Top 25 teams. The sheer number of games against high elite caliber programs is insane...

but they also have games against four complete garbage teams (ie teams that rank below every team in the acc).

and yeah i miscounted the big east number in the top 25.

i think that the big east has more good teams. but that they're roughly on par with the acc and the pac 10, they just have more teams, so they then have more good teams (and more bad).

That's fair. The top 10 in the Big East are far superior to any other league IMO, but the bottom 4 do drag it down. Though each good team only plays those bottom 4 once where as a lot of ACC teams will play us and Tech twice... so it's roughly equivalent for most teams in terms of schedule difficulty versus the back end.

one decent comparison i think is the top half of each of these three (again i'll just kenpom ratings for consistency):
ACC:
UNC
Wake
Duke
Clemson
Miami
Maryland

Big East:
Georgetown
Pittsburgh
Connecticut
West Virginia
Louisville
Marquette
Villanova
Syracuse

Pac-10
ASU
UCLA
Washington
California
USC

If you look at it this way i'd rank BE>ACC>P10. But when you factor in the bottom half of each, ACC gets far stronger, since the bottom 6 or so are fairly close to evenly shitty.

Does Pittsburgh's arena seriously have courtside box seats?

[Edited on January 19, 2009 at 7:49 PM. Reason : And how the hell was Pitt ever ranked #1 w/ a 65% ft avg??]

Yes, and it is a terrible design at that. For one they should have made it where their student section is behind the benches. It would have made it more intimidating. Everyone knows this. Also for you to be able to watch the game live you have to come out of the box and fill in the seats just outside of the boxes. The Petersen Events Center is definitely a tough place to play, but it could have been so much better. I already mentioned that they messed up with the courtside box seats and the student section being put on the wrong side of the arena. It's also too big for it's capacity. By that I mean the roof is too high. It only seats 12,508, yet has a roof that's comparable to many NBA arenas. Now consider this, Reynolds Coliseum sat 12,400, just a shade under the capacity of The Pete. Reynolds though has a much lower roof and the students were all around the court. The Pete can't compare to Reynolds in intimidation factor. It's kind of sad that it is considered one of the toughest places to play in the Big East as well as the NCAA. Gary Williams would routinely lose his cool in Reynolds.

For those that went to the GT game on Saturday, were there any "incidents" with Paul Hewitt this time?

refs are giving wake the business

they're not helping themselves cause they're turning it over too, but still....there have been some questionable calls/no-calls in this game that have all gone against wake.

Northwestern beat Michigan State for the first time in 12 games, and for the first time in Lansing since like 1984.

Clemson had UNC on the run in the first half and then at the very end of the first half they gave UNC the momentum. (Although on a side note, I did think that Lawson should have been given a foul for that charge with about 45 seconds remaining) Now UNC is just going to run away with it. I would have loved to see Clemson beat UNC at the Dean Dome for the first time in the last 53 Dean Dome matches between the two.

Too bad Clemson is going to give away.

Wow, I knew Joyce Center was hard to play at, but I didn't realize Notre Dame had a 45 game home winning streak.

If UConn can go in there and win on Saturday they might split some #1 votes with Duke...

Ha, apparently God only likes basketball now!

I've read it's one of the louder buildings, but I've never been there. I know it's small and has a similar design to Virginia's old building I think... If you get time, could you give one of your building run downs...

Lol at ND's schedule. Jesus, that is some shit. They have a very realistic change to go 0-4 and have their RPI go UP significantly. Their last two games, both losses, were against #8 Syracuse and #9 Louisville. Tomorrow they play #3 UConn and then on Monday they play #11 Marquette.

On the CU/VT game Bob Knight is about to analyze why shot fakes work and how to use them effectively. Someone phone Horner and tell him to tune in.
