It's hard to watch games where the better team loses. I thought the play calling in the 3rd quarter was atrocious. Phil's INT which lead to a TD was probably the biggest swing in the game. 1/17/2010 9:52:51 PM |

highly highly disappointed.
I usually balk when people blame the kicker as the cliche' loser of games but Kaeding fucking blew it. No one expected him to get the 57 yd one at the half but blowing two 40 yard ones....
There is no excuse. Hit one of those and worst case we lose in OT as a team effort in fucking up. 1/17/2010 9:53:29 PM |

As much as everyone wants to put Kaeding as the team scapegoat for this game...Rivers threw two INTs in a row, one which led to a touch down, the personal foul, the kicking the flag, yeah....I mean Kaeding should have hit those 40 yarders, but still, you can't put the blame on him alone. 1/18/2010 3:37:56 AM |

^ plus our lack of a running game, Antonio Gates letting a few important 3rd down passes go through his HANDS, the team looking effortless a lot of the game, blah blah blah. I agree and usually I try to look past the kicker being the one "blowing the game" as we should never have been relying on him to win it. Nonetheless this is not like the game was in Kaeding's hands with 5 seconds to go and he has to hit a 50 yd attempt or Kaeding misses the OT kick with the Jets taking over on the 30 yard line after which they kick the game winning field goal following a 40 yard pass by Sanchez.
Kaeding missed 3 field goal attempts. Sure one was 57 yards that we didn't expect him to make. Two of them though were ROUTINE 40 yard attempts. Had he been 33.3% yesterday we may have been going to Indianapolis.

the good thing about the chargers losing is that i no longer have mixed emotions about next week's AFC championship game.
i really like manning and would like to see him win it this year. i do wish that the colts would have been going for 18-0 and a trip to the superbowl rather than only the superbowl trip.
hopefully new orleans will rock favre's world and send him in to permanent retirement on the NFC side.

Kaeding choked obviously, but I know that the Colts had a worse running game than the Chargers and won, but Norv seems so against not just benching LT. LT sucks and Norv continued to call plays for him at critical times in the game, not just run plays, but screens. I just wouldn't have given the ball to LT, he cannot break any tackles any more. Gates letting passes go through his hands was bad, and Norv's onside kick call I thought was dumb. Kick it away and let your defense try and get the ball back instead of putting them in field goal position from the start. Norv's gotta go, 1/18/2010 2:12:41 PM |

^^ a PROFESSIONAL kicker is expected to make every single 40 yarder, and it should be demanded that he get at least 1 of 2 forty yarders. There is absolutely NO argument there. If he can't do that then he's not doing his job.
Did you not see Nick Folk get canned in Dallas because of this?

it was certainly not his best game, but he played well enough for them to win. The dropped passes (including the one that led to the first INT) and the missed kicks killed their team the most probably. That and some stupid coaching calls. The glaring thing that blotted his performance was the 2nd interception. 1/19/2010 12:08:06 PM |

^^^^27/40, 298 yards, 1 td and 2 ints isn't a bad statline. throw in the facts that the first interception was complete dumb luck, he had several drops by his WRs, and vincent jackson was a foot from a td on his last catch...and rivers' statline could have looked even better.
i don't think our hero is one of the main ones to blame for this one.

I wouldn't say he looked awful. The only throw that I remember being bad was of course the 2nd interception - which was an awful throw. The first interception was a fluke. He had 61 rushing yards to help him - 30 of which were right before the half on draws. He didn't have a great game - but I certainly wouldn't call it awful. Who on the team had a good game? Their center, who's reliable as hell, even cost them a drive with a terrible snap. 1/19/2010 12:49:51 PM |

If I recall, b/w Tomlinson and Sproles (who didn't get enough snaps in the 2nd half), they combined for <15 rushing yards in the 2nd half.

I'll say this...
The reason why the Chargers were on their 11-game win streak was because Rivers has been playing lights out and not making mistakes. It helped that their defense has stepped up...but Rivers and the receiving corps were the MAIN reasons they were the hottest team in the league.
The fact is that he had a less than stellar performance. He made a HUGE mistake that led to the Jets TD. He plays like he has been most of the season...and they win the game. The rest of the team played like they had been playing (the defense was great IMO...take away Philip's bad interception that gave them great field position and they hold the Jets to 10 points) during the streak. Rivers and Kaeding were the two disappointments for the game. 1/19/2010 1:28:01 PM |

PR on 3rd Down (went through the game log for this, so might be a little off):
5/9 with an INT and a Sack Taken (fumble)
3 of those completions? Not first downs.
The fact is, the kid didn't come to play in the big game, and you could tell it from a mile away.
I got mad love for the kid, and think he was AMAZING in the regular season. But this is becoming quite the trend for him (not coming through in the playoffs)

^^ for starters, that specific interception hit Jackson in the hands. Had he caught the ball, it was a first down inside the red zone. He didn't, and the extremely bad luck bounce off of Jackson's leg happened resulting in the absolute luck of an INT by the Jets.
You take that back and he is 6/9 with the sack taken on 3rd downs. Not MVP stats, but nothing game changing.
Once again, he certainly did not have a great game or even a good one compared to the regular season; however, outside of the 2nd INT, there were plenty of other people/factors equally as at fault as him. Had he not thrown that 2nd INT, his stats look plenty good enough to win the game if the other offensive players played the game they were supposed to play.
Quote : | "It's not just "one play"" |
It really is. As I've been saying, that was the one glaring play from him during the game and pretty much cost them, even if other things should have gone their way. Outside of that, I thoroughly believe he played well enough for them to win if the other people follow through. It just sucks that his one truly BAD play was HUGE. Without it, they probably win the game, with Rivers having mediocre stats and certainly not chokeworthy/"can't play the big game" comments.

^^^ Without that one play, they win the game. Jets probably never take the lead if Phil's pick doesn't give them the field position. No use arguing about it though because they lost.
As for River's not being good in the playoffs, I don't agree with that. The year he played with two wrecked knees was pretty remarkable. Also considering that LT hasn't done shit ever in the playoffs, Rivers has basically had to single handedly lead the offense (other than Sproles huge game last year).

yes, because swapping a player from their peak and placing them on a current team to compare to a new QB is a logical comparison
Tom Brady had a significantly worse 1st round playoff game than Rivers had...
Sure, a not so healthy team, but Brady was nothing to write home about this year (a solid year, but we're not comparing two QBs with significantly different stats). Certainly not a clear cut better than Rivers that it would have made a huge difference.
Over the past 4 seasons, including regular and postseason, Rivers has averaged about 1.5 yds/att more than Brady, yet your main complaint is that Rivers just throws dink passes?
