I don't think I've ever met a Hurricane fan who has thought Tripp Tracey was good at his job. In fact, while working at the ice rink in Greensboro, the consensus among everyone was that he is the worst analyst in the league.

Oh I was definitely joking about Tripp being good at his job. I bet you could count at least 3 times a game where Forslund is at an absolute loss because of Tripp being an idiot. While I hate hearing his absurd comments, it's quite amusing hearing Johnny Rock in utter disbelief at what he is hearing out of Tripp's mouth. 11/30/2009 10:28:47 PM |

^The hit was worse than I thought last night, but I was sitting at a bad angle to see the leg stuck out.
That said, not all Caps fans are bandwagon fans and that's funny coming from someone in Raleigh. I know there's a lot of die-hard Canes fans, but let's not have the pot calling the kettle black.
I've been watching the Canes since they came to Greensboro, but I've been watching the Caps since '91 or so when I first started watching the NHL.
And that's all I'll say on the subject since this isn't a Caps thread. Hopefully the Canes can get better sometime soon or Mo gets the can again.

^I too have been watching the Canes since they were in Greensboro, though I am not a Canes fan (I live in the 'boro, so it was awesome having an NHL team so close for two years).
I am a Pens fan. We have our fair share of bandwagon fans as well, and you can tell who they are because they are the ones who call in to sports talk shows and claim that the only way to be successful is to trade Crosby. They are also the ones who wear Roethlisberger jerseys to games and yell "SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!" on the power play. But despite the lean years and low attendance in the early part of this decade, the Pens still had some of the best TV ratings in the US, so it's not like the Pens have been starving for fans until a couple years ago.
Do I wish I could go back to the days when you could walk up to the window on gameday and buy 8 tickets in A level? Sure. Do I miss "big name" players like Rico Fata and Konstanin Koltsov? Absolutely not.
I know there are many Caps fans who are die hards, but from my experience at Caps games in Raleigh, Pittsburgh, and Washington I discovered that there are a lot of bandwagon jumpers from the past three years that couldn't tell you who Dale Hunter is, or that you can hand pass the puck in your defensive zone. I mean for fucks sake, they boo obvious offside calls in that seizure inducing laser light show they call an arena.
This was a more of rant that I wanted to make it, but I just get tired of the "ZOMG Ovechkin is teh best!!!11!! Crosby just crys, he doesnt deserv the c!!1!"

Quote : | "The last time a slumping Hurricanes team hit December 1 with a long break between games, a major change soon occurred. That may not happen immediately in the present day’s similar situation, but it won’t be for lack of trying.
Following a home loss to the Anaheim Ducks on November 30, 2008, General Manager Jim Rutherford used three days off to institute a coaching change. It’s clear that another regime transformation won’t take place exactly one year later for various reasons, but the playing roster could be a different story.
“We’re looking to transition this team,” said Rutherford. “The good part is that we’re sitting here with a lot of good young players looking to come in, and we’re looking to acquire other young players. If we can do that, we can start to feel good about where we’re going.”
However, with a roster pushing the limits of the salary cap, it’s easier said than done to find room for upcoming players such as Zach Boychuk, Drayson Bowman and other talented prospects currently playing in Albany of the AHL.
“It’s hard to accelerate [change] because you really can’t move contracts out,” said Rutherford. “If we could, we would probably move a handful of guys out today and move the younger guys in, even if they weren’t ready, and start that process.
At the present moment, Rutherford’s hands are tied. There will surely be a handful of teams eager to acquire some of Carolina’s affordable expiring contracts near the trade deadline, but that won’t be until after the Hurricanes have absorbed most of the financial burden.
In December, finding teams willing to take on those contracts for the bulk of the season is much more difficult. Even if the Canes could work out a deal with one particular team right now, it may be actually more fruitful to wait until a bigger market emerges in the days leading up to March 3.
“It’s just the way the system is,” said Rutherford. “You put your team together in the off-season and you hope you’re right. I think if you wind the clock back, everybody was pretty excited [before the season]. For whatever reason, some things didn’t work out and some guys have underperformed. It’s unfortunate, but that’s just the way sports works.”
While acknowledging his not-so-secret desire to make trades sooner or later, Rutherford made it clear that he’ll keep an eye on a future that he still believes to be optimistic.
”We have the core here of a lot of good young players,” he said. “It’s not like we have a horrible team that’s been torn apart, and that’s the one thing I’ll be very cautious about. I’m not saying I wouldn’t move one of our core guys, but it would have to be a real special deal for us. It would have to be for a special reason.”
So, what can the Hurricanes do right now? They could place veterans on waivers in the hope that they would be claimed and create space for incoming prospects. While that’s a possibility, a more ideal answer would be simple if it weren’t so complicated – keep trying to win games.
“We’re not going to give up on this season,” said Rutherford. “We’re just not going to do it. We have to be positive, go out and put on a good show for our fans. We owe it to our fans.”
In saying that, Rutherford acknowledged a dilemma that many have had in the back of their minds. Although he believes this team is capable of a strong second half and a playoff spot, falling just short of that goal would be the worst-case scenario.
“If we can’t get back to that playoff spot, in some ways we don’t want to perform too well, because then you get in those years where you pick 15th or 20th in the draft instead of picking in the top five,” he said. “I remember the last time we had a bad year [a 30th-place finish in 2002-03], it was hard for the fans, it was frustrating for us and it was ugly, but there’s a big prize waiting if that happens. The prize we got last time was Eric Staal and a big reason why we won a Stanley Cup.”
If it comes to that, which it would if the season ended today, the Canes would be guaranteed a top-two draft pick, even if they lost the lottery. With a core of good young players already in place and more on the way, the Canes could essentially skip the rebuilding process typical of most last-place teams while adding a top-level talent.
“If you take our core guys and added a star player immediately out of the draft, that team could take a huge step forward,” said Rutherford. “If it ended today, that’s where we’d be, but we owe it to our fans to win games.”" |

Quote : | "ARLINGTON, Virginia (AP)—Alex Ovechkin’s(notes) right knee doesn’t seem to be the issue. He says it’s just sore.
The concern is that he’s now been tossed out of two games in less than a week, and his coach is suggesting that maybe it’s time for the league’s two-time reigning MVP to curb some of his “pretty reckless” ways.
As for Ovechkin, he was candid: “I play risky.” He also said he sees no reason to change.
Ovechkin was pronounced “day-to-day with a sore knee” by the Capitals on Tuesday, a day after he initiated a frightening knee-to-knee hit on defenseman Tim Gleason(notes) in a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. He was on the ice in a red Capitals track suit about 25 minutes before the start of practice and skated for less than five minutes but did not move at full speed.
“It’s not a bad injury,” Ovechkin said. “I thought it was going to be worse, but thank God I can walk, I can skate. Of course, it’s a little bit sore, but it’s not that serious.”
Ovechkin didn’t rule out playing in Thursday’s game against the Florida Panthers, but he might not have a choice in the matter. He was given a 5-minute major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct for the hit on Gleason, just two games after he was whistled for a 5-minute boarding major and game misconduct for his hit on the Buffalo Sabres’ Patrick Kaleta(notes) last week.
As the Capitals were waiting to hear from the league office about a possible suspension, Ovechkin was already pleading his case. He said he didn’t have time to pull back when Gleason changed directions while attempting to push the puck out of the Hurricanes’ zone.
“I can do nothing about it,” Ovechkin said. “It’s just a moment of the game. I turned and realize I don’t have time to stop.”
Ovechkin was defiant when asked about his style of play. No one scores goals better, but he also loves to hit. He leads the Capitals with 18 goals, 30 points — and 44 penalty minutes. He missed six games earlier this season with an upper body injury, the first time in his career he’s had an injury that cost him more than one game.
“Why do I have to listen to somebody who say, ‘Hey, you have to change your game, and somebody going to kill you,”’ Ovechkin said. “Well, nobody going to kill me. I just play my game and I just enjoy my time and I enjoy my life. It’s me, and it is what it is.”
“I play risky,” he said. “I won’t try and hit and make some people get hurt, but people sometimes turn right away and I don’t have time to realize and stop. What can you do? You can do nothing.”
Coach Bruce Boudreau isn’t so sure anymore. After two years of essentially letting Ovechkin be Ovechkin, the coach said it’s perhaps time for a heart-to-heart talk.
“He’s pretty reckless,” Boudreau said. “It’s hard telling a guy that scores 60 goals a year to change the way he plays. At the same time, I don’t want to see him getting hurt. Maybe he has to pick his spots a little better. The open-ice hits, you just look around the league. It’s not only the hitter, it’s the guy that gets hit. … It’s something that will have to be addressed by us, I guess. … Not only as a coach, but as somebody who admires him, I just don’t want him to put himself in harm’s way, so we’ll see.”
Boudreau said Ovechkin isn’t trying to play dirty.
“Alex plays hard,” Boudreau said. “All the time. I don’t think there’s a malicious bone of him trying to hurt anybody. He just plays hard and he plays to win every shift. And it’s a really fine line between taking that away from him, and I don’t see how you can take it away other than talking to him and saying, ‘We don’t want to put you in that situation any more.’ But when he gets out there, he just wants to win so badly he does whatever we can for that team to succeed.”" |

Blackhawks just extended Toews, Kane, and Keith, and now must immediately free up cap space for next season. NHL rules state that you cannot have more money committed to future seasons than the current salary cap. The Hawks have to clear $5 million in salary now.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your views on Ladd, trading him gains nothing for the Blackhawks as he is an RFA after this year.
Any deals Chicago makes will likely involve any of the following players, and they must clear around $5 million of salary. Consequentially, any player they bring back in a trade must be on the final year of his contract.
Patrick Sharp ($4.1 million) Dave Bolland ($3.375 million) Kris Versteeg ($3.083 million) Dustin Byfuglien ($3 million) Tomas Kopecky ($1.2 million) Troy Brouwer ($1 million) Brian Campbell ($7.14 million) Brent Seabrook ($3.5 million) Cam Barker ($3.125 million) Brent Sopel ($2 million) Cristobal Huet ($5.625 million)
That Campbell signing looks even dumber now.
Joe Corvo was highly likely before IMO to go to Chicago, but now I would imagine that is completely dead. Matt Cullen and Aaron Ward perhaps.
