Lately I have been fascinated with the paleo diet. I dunno why.

I don't think I would ever be able to restrict myself from grains. Anyone on here do it or know anyone who does it?

its been really rough though b/c ive been more lethargic and my diet has been all over the place! i just like working out

put i weighed in this morning at 140, which is where i was before, so good thing i have gained anything but......i feel like my thighs have gotten fattier

le sigh, i may try and go get on the bikes for like 30 min or so tomorrow or wednesday to test it out

My knee was feeling better so I went running. Feel pretty good.

Although I apparently have some developing allergy to white wine. Raging insomnia and swelling of the fingers at 5am = not cool.

I have for a while, but I don't adhere 100% (lack of willpower). What's funny is my wife has been seeing this chiropractor/naturopath. He's had her on this all vegetable diet for a month and we're getting pissed about it. Recently, he says "OK, I need to put you on this even stricter diet, sorry." Turns out, it's essentially paleo with a few modifications. Rejoice!

Anyway, making grain free meals isn't that bad. Eggs + bacon for breakfast. Meat + vegetables for lunch/dinner. Nuts/fruit/meat/veggies for snacks. You can even do pretty well eating out.

The way I look at it is this: by themselves, rice, bread, bagels, pasta, etc. are pretty bland foods. It's what you add that makes them tasty. Like tomato sauce, various meats, spices, butter (quasi-paleo). So for example, I will make meatballs, spaghetti squash, broccoli, and tomato sauce as a meal.

Cass that sucks. When my ex-fiance's dad came to get her stuff out of my then-apartment (long time ago), I woke up at like six am itching and swollen all over. I always figured he did some stuff to my house since I called off the wedding, but now I'm wondering if I just had an allergy to something at the time (holy grudge-harboring batman).

Needless to say, I lost two more kilos this week which brings my total to... 12.1 lbs in three weeks. I'm pretty pleased with the weightloss, but I'm really hoping to see some difference in my measurements this next week. I've only lost 1/4 inch on my waist. Here's to health!

Thanks Will. It's happened a few times before but I could never pinpoint it exactly. But recently I gave up white wine in favor of red and I guess I found the culprit. I had some more bloodwork done last week - we think it's thyroid related but who knows.

Cass you could be allergic to the sulfites or have a histamine intolerance heightened by wine. Do you only swell or do you also get headaches? For some reason, everytime i eat rice with wine my throat gets very itchy and I feel like I'm bloated... It happens to my dad as well.

i get a dull headache but it's delayed by about 12-18 hours. i think it has to do with the sugar - i've been having weird issues with sugar lately and have to monitor it (and sodium) very carefully all of a sudden. i'm waiting for some more test results to come back this week. but my luck the doc will be like, "oh youre fine."

After losing 10 lbs from getting a pretty active job (standing all day, lifting 50lbs regularly), I'm getting on track with getting into better shape. I started tracking what I eat on The Daily Plate, which is really addictive! I'm shooting for about 1,500 calories and I've been coming under most days. What I really need to work on is getting my protein higher and carbs lower - I'm hitting about a 30%/40%/30% split of calories from protein/carbs/fat. That's a huge improvement from a couple of weeks ago when I wasn't trying.

I really want to start lifting weights but I still feel fat and I don't know what I'm doing in terms of form so I don't want to just go in and start it. I guess that means I ought to get a trainer session or two at the gym or something.

No real update here, but in the past couple days I've had three separate people I was looking "ripped" or "like you've been hitting the weights."

It's interesting because I have been running about 20 miles per week and only lifting weights once a week or so. I swim and do some athletic conditioning type classes during the week, but maybe I'm eating too many calories or something and I'm putting muscle on. Not really sure.

I bought the Paleo guide by Robb Wolf and might give it a shot for a few months. I needed something to read so I might as well.

Strangely, I have been having stomach issues with protein shakes. I can drink just milk or put a little protein powder in my yogurt and have no problems. I hate to think that I can't digest that much lactose because I am getting older but I bought some lactaid and it made my stomach stop hurting. Sad stuff.

Kirk, you may just be a natural meso. And swimming will make you ripped.

The issue could be a cross btwn higher calorie intake and maybe just what you're wearing. Once the spring clothes come out, the body commentary seems to rise.

Plus, ripped means different things to different people.

Last night, a friend I hadn't seen in about a month looked at me and said "Will, have you lost weight?"

I was pretty pleased about that.

this week is looking good. had a great work out yesterday. ran for 2.5 miles (my goal is 3 miles 3 times a week) and worked out triceps. today is another run and working out back and shoulders. I've been on point getting into the gym 3-4 times a week and running each time for the past 4 weeks, this is week 5. I've lost 6 lbs, feel tighter and my wife says my posture is better. so far so good...just got to keep at it.

to everyone that can lose weight easily. jk good job

it's been almost 3 months and i'm only down 5 pounds i'm hoping the doctor calls me back today - if my thyroid levels come back high again, then it's back to the endocrinologist for thyroid medication.

ok, just to prove a point here.

I stopped lifting weights for the past ~3-4 weeks, keeping the -1000 calorie deficit while doing pretty much the same things otherwise (i.e. cardio workouts, volleyball, etc..)

i reached my goal weight (185 lbs.) a few weeks ago and have remained within +4 lbs. of that, not going over 190 lbs.

BUT, my progress has stalled and I have not lost any more inches or weight

at this calorie intake rate, I SHOULD have lost some weight. (~6 lb fluctuation per day is normal for me)

this tells me that I HAVE to get back in the weight room

[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 10:28 AM. Reason : 185.4 lbs this morning]

well this is frustrating - lab results came back normal. good that there's nothing wrong but seriously my body is so out of whack. i can't lose weight, i can't digest food properly anymore, i absorb sugar weird, i'm sensitive to salt.

how can i have 4 tests come back with high cortisol and then i'm fine and then 1 test come back with high thyroid and then come back fine.

there are lots of factors that can cause those levels to transiently out of whack...

4 tests does seem like a lot though...i would take this as a good thing-maybe you are returning to normal!

[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 1:02 PM. Reason : ie-iodine defficiency (i believe it's def! ) can cause transient hypothyroidism]

I considered doing the Paleo diet while pregnant because I am having such insulin resistance but my doctors told me I need at least 120g carb per day so I am not wasting away. It is a VERY strict diet!

lol i like how i had this nice long PM typed out to Joie and then i accidentally clicked off on the page before hitting send

i guess its for the best since you don't know much but if you come across any information about it that you think might be helpful, i'm all ears. i'm going to go do some more research and try to get the swelling down in my fingers (uh yeah swelling is back - i think its the turkey bacon).

What are everyone's fav ab exercises that require no equipment (just a mat)? I prefer planks, bicycles, crunches and leg lifts, but I could use some more suggestions to keep my class fresh.

sit in a sit-up position but halfway down/up and lift your legs a couple inches off the ground then alternate touching elbows to the ground.

Since I'm not a dietician, I'm not really allowed to give dietary advice to my class. All I can do is help them work on their core strength. Very good point though!

i was just being facetious (although it is very very true)

the onyl thing i ever do for abs anymore (which is rare) are floor sprints....but you have to MAKE SURE that your wrists and shoulders are aligned otherwise youll work your arms more than your abs

trust me, I wish I could tell my students to put down the doughnuts. Then again, I know Oreo-junkies with 6-packs (ahem, Quinn), so I think it's mostly genetics.

I would love for my class to do burpees and mountainclimbers, but basic planks and crunches kill them!

I really like plank, side-plank and the variations thereof. Lifting an arm, then a leg, then both and eventually moving to one of those half swiss ball things so you have even more balance to contend with. The key is keeping your spine in as natural a position as possible.

I think anything you can do weighted will be the best. Like you said I'm a bad source. I try to eat my way into a food baby without a ton of luck. Just copy a les miles core track.

I'm thinking I probably need to go to the doctor pretty soon. I've noticed a steady decline in my right shoulder stability when doing bench press over the years. Hopefully its something I can work on myself without having to get surgery.

^^ I wish we could use weights, but the only equipment permitted in this class is a mat.

Trust me, I'd love to have weights and a stability ball.

Oh no LunaK maybe if you take a couple of days of lower impact stuff it'll feel better? My knee was bothering me real bad so I took time off from running and weight training and am sticking to walking for a couple of weeks and I've noticed a (good) difference in just a few days.
