"Some UNC Walmart fan came into my workplace today trying to do some business with us. He saw some of the State stuff I have in my office and said "Yeah the Wolfpack are playing well". He tells me he is a UNC fan and I ask him if he went to school there. The answer is the obvious no.

We start talking about the tourney and he calls Creighton a bunch of goons for injuring Marshall intentionally. LOL. I ask him a few questions and can tell he knows jack shit about sports and only likes Carolina because his mom got him a shirt at the local gas station when he was 5. Did not even know who Stillman White or JJ Watts were. Told me he would be pulling for the Pack to beat Kansas because it helps UNC reach the Final 4. I just smiled and decided that I did not want to do business with his bandwagon ass."

So Marshall tweeted today that he took off his cast. I assume so he could tug on Barnes nuts while fellating him. His left hand was dedicated to Barnes asshole.

Heard on the radio his tweet was "cast off" which led me to believe that he was going to Missouri via the mighty Mississippi and casting off in a riverboat. I should probably work on connecting the dots.

"I'm an Ohio alum and lifelong North Carolina fan. The minute the OU game ended on Sunday, I received about 20 texts from friends and family asking me who I would be rooting for in the Sweet 16. Then about 100 texts berating me for picking the Heels. Am I wrong for going with my childhood team? Should my allegiance be with my alma mater? Help me out, man.
—Matt, Columbus, Ohio

As a lifelong Indiana fan who holds a degree from Ohio State, I often find myself in your position. And while there are few things that have mattered to me more in my life than Indiana basketball, when the Buckeyes play the Hoosiers, I want nothing more than for Tom Crean and his repulsive haircut to suck a fat one. Maybe my situation is a different because I was actually on the Ohio State team, but I just can’t envision a scenario in which rooting against an alma mater is acceptable, especially in your case. I mean, this is Ohio’s first trip to the Sweet 16, and could literally be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to cheer on the Bobcats in a game of this magnitude. A win Friday would mean infinitely more to Ohio than to North Carolina, which is why you should throw your childhood allegiances out the window and cheer on the school that provided you with the opportunity to make so many irresponsible decisions.

If nothing else, look at it this way: As a guy who graduated from the no. 1 party school in America and has a full understanding of just how wild Ohio can get, do you really want to deprive all of the current students the opportunity to celebrate the unprecedented win by throwing some of the most kickass parties in school history? Are you really that selfish?"

I'm a Miami grad and a lifelong NC State fan.

Was pulling for NC State to get the tourney bid over Miami all the way.

Most people don't grasp just how easy it is to be a Carolina Fan. Its cake. They'll always on TV, they're always good, and they always have the best players. Anybody can root for a team like that. But to be a State fan? That takes some fucking backbone.

i don't understand how you could want a school that you did not attend to beat one that you did. totally defeats the purpose of college sports.

it's like if you got in a fistfight w/ your best friend. you wouldn't be like "you know what, i've always liked you, i hope you do kick my ass".

[Edited on March 21, 2012 at 7:34 PM. Reason : ^^ that is also absurdly true. it's so easy to buy a carolina hat and pay attention for one month.]

My four years at Miami does not take precedence over the prior 17 years(minus when I was too young to understand anything) of NC State love.

It's nothing like getting in a fistfight with your best friend.

My dad thinks I should pull for North Carolina because I live in North Carolina. "You should always support your local teams." he says. Fuck you, dad. There's no such thing as a local team in North Carolina. There is no "home team".You pick your allegiance and hate everyone else. I'd pull for the Monstars over Carolina.

I remember I was about 5-6, the state/carolina game was about to start, and they were interviewing dean smith. I just blurted out "Dean Smith is a son of a bitch." Immediately I turned to my father with this look of shock on my face that read "please don't beat the shit out of me." and he just says, "It's ok when you're talking about him."

you know what's worst i know Knew 2 people that went to state and are huge UNC! WTF brain damage much.

A guy i know who pulls for Duke bball, FSU fball, NY yankees, LA Lakers, and probably the LA Galaxy if he follows soccer.

He does pull for the Chi Bears that's the only odd ball team. I think he's a kurt busch fan too. what a loser.

listen people there are rules.

1. You must pull for the same Fball and Bball for college.

Worst part is the guy who works down the hall from me. Never went to college, very successful, but he's one of these Lakers/Yankees/Redskins/Tar Heels assholes. But he only likes Carolina Basketball. Doesn't even acknowledge the football teams presence. So all my ammunition goes for naught. Irritates the hell out of me. Other than people who talk with their mouth full and slow drivers, no one bothers me more than frontrunners.

"About a 30-minute drive from campus, North Carolina's players seemed to enjoy their rival's NCAA run, too. In fact, junior John Henson showed up for a news conference Tuesday wearing a black T-shirt and red shorts, joking it was in honor of the Wolfpack.

"Along with Florida State and Duke, I think it was one of our tougher games and it was good to see N.C. State go well," Henson said. "It's part of the ACC, so we kind of have to band together in the postseason and kind of flex our muscles ACC-wise and show what we've got.""

Both my parents went to unc so a few times a year we would board the rams club bus for boosters and ride to chapel hill for the game.

Once we went to a preseason game in 1989 I believe at the dean dome when unc was playing the Soviet Union national team (it was ussr still, Russia hadn't happened yet).

So here I am like 6-7 years old sitting in the middle of the rams club section cheering for the fucking Soviet Red Army. My dad said people were pretty pissed. I had no idea what communism or the cold war were really, I just knew you always cheer against unc.

Gregg Doyel actually calling out UNC fans for their behavior...sort of
Quote :
"Reaction to foul on UNC's Marshall latest example of fans abusing loyalty
We expect so much from college athletes. We expect class, restraint, composure -- and for the most part they give it. I've seen things from college athletes in the heat of competition that would warm both ventricles of your heart, and for examples I don't have to go back a few decades, or even a few years. I can go back a few days, to Norfolk State, which stunned Missouri and then was stomped by Florida and showed class, restraint, composure in both instances.

One example of many: When the Missouri game ended, the pro-Kansas crowd in Omaha, Neb., was howling -- not so much at Norfolk State in support, but at Missouri in derision -- and Missouri's Phil Pressey sat there on the court. Emotionally, he looked destroyed. A few feet away, Norfolk State's Kyle O'Quinn stood there on the court. Emotionally, he looked delighted. But then he saw Pressey's pain, and O'Quinn gathered himself, walked over, helped him up, hugged him, told him he had played with honor. I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

But then, that's what we expect from athletes. We expect so much -- much more, it turns out, than we expect from ourselves.

This isn't a rant against what North Carolina fans did this weekend, because North Carolina fans are merely the tip of this ugly iceberg -- and anyway, it wasn't all North Carolina fans, or even most North Carolina fans, who embarrassed themselves, their fan base, their school. The UNC fans in question here were the tip of that iceberg, and that's a pretty iceberg. North Carolina is a great school, and like all schools, North Carolina has mostly great fans.

But all it takes is a few of them, giving what those few gave to Creighton, to make you angry. And I'm getting disgusted just thinking about it.

Maybe you know what I'm talking about. When North Carolina played Creighton on Sunday, Creighton forward Ethan Wragge fouled UNC point guard Kendall Marshall. The collision sent Marshall to the floor, where he caught himself with his right wrist -- and broke it.

The foul was hard but clean, so normal, so innocuous -- even as it sent North Carolina's most important player to the court -- that nobody from UNC complained. Nobody got in Wragge's face, not even Marshall. He popped up and walked to the foul line for his free throws. The injury that would be determined later was enormous, but at the time the play was no big deal. Not to anyone on the court.

Then came later.

Turns out, Marshall had stayed in the game and played several more minutes with a broken bone in his wrist. Turns out, he needed surgery the next day. Turns out, he might miss the rest of the NCAA tournament, and even if he can play, surely he won't play at 100 percent. And this is a season in which UNC has had realistic dreams of a national championship. That dream remains intact, but it's not so realistic anymore.

And some UNC fans went nuts.

Some, I say. Some.

They emailed and tweeted Creighton athletics director Bruce Rasmussen, telling him horrible lies about the character of his program. Had they stopped there, it would have been shameful behavior by some -- some, I say, some -- UNC fans.

But they didn't stop there. And I'm getting dismayed just thinking about it.
They found the Twitter address of Wragge and unloaded, writing unspeakable things at a college kid who was guilty, honestly, of nothing more nefarious than lacking athletic ability. Had Wragge been a lot quicker, as Marshall caught up to him from behind and then zoomed past, he would have been able to contest the shot more cleanly, maybe even block it. Instead, by the time Wragge's body reacted to what his eyes had seen, all he could do was reach futilely with his left hand while his momentum -- and Marshall's momentum -- created the collision that led to the hard fall.

Wragge wasn't dirty -- he was slow. Big difference. But not to the UNC fans who wrote him, and this wasn't one or two. It wasn't all of them, or even most of them, but it was lots. How many? Too many. Here's a collection of some of the tweets, but the language is indefensible. If you click the link, don't do it with young kids around. I'm serious.

Also in that collection of deplorable tweets are apologies from anguished UNC fans, humiliated that a handful of UNC supporters would stoop so low.

Anyway, this isn't a story about UNC fans -- it's not. It's not a story about fans of Kansas and Missouri, either, though Omaha was bracing for trouble when both teams were assigned to the pod there. Fights had broken out 10 days earlier in Kansas City when (some) fans of both schools couldn't handle being in the same town for the Big 12 tournament without fighting. A Kansas athletic department official, once a KU football player, was beaten so badly that he needed surgery. The assailant hasn't been identified as a Missouri fan, but Kansas fans have made that assumption. In any event, the violence in Kansas City baffled Kansas coach Bill Self.

"I understand you don't have to like each other. I don't understand some of the hostility that goes with it," Self told the newspaper in Lawrence, Kan. "I heard fights were going on -- that stuff is ridiculous."

Sure it is, but it happens. All the time. All over the place. That's why this isn't a story about fans of North Carolina, or Kansas, or Missouri. It's a story about fans all over the map, and what they expect from the athletes they watch, and what they tolerate from themselves. The gap is wide. The irony is thick.

And the stench is nauseating.

^4 Awesome story face.

I too have an almost identical story. My dad was friends with a big Rams club booster and that dude was always trying to "sway" us. Ive been in Kenan Field House (or whatever it was called, that old building they used to have with the tile roof where the locker rooms were (or used to be)) and you could see the opposing players in their locker room, below the glass floor but it was opaque.

But one time he took a couple of us to a fairly new Dean Dome, in probably the mid to late 80's (i must have been 13-14), whenever UNC played the Jugoslavian National Team (And yes, spelled with a "J" can never forget it). We were 3 rows up from the floor right down from their bench and you would have thought i was some foreign exchange student cheering for my homeland; ive hated and been taught to hate the tarholes for a longggg time.

My dad was a UNC fan so I became a UNC fan and cheered for them my whole life, until I came to State.

After that I never cheered for them again unless they are playing Duke in Cameron (I love to see the home fans sad, so I cheer for the away team in games between these teams).

i just have two quick stories to add

1. i was in college, and on some friday or saturday night took a rare venture to chapel hill for a party a high school friend told me about...there are some wack emcees in the place so i go out to the car and grab a couple CDs of rap instrumentals...dude's flow was weak, but i just remember i finished my rhyme with "FUCK CHAPEL HILL!" in a house in chapel hill full of UNC students...i left unscathed

2. about 10 minutes before the Georgetown game, i'm walking into my apartment with some food, and my cool old lady neighbor asks me if i'm going to watch some basketball...i tell her yes, state is about to play georgetown in 5 minutes...she asks me what time the unc game is...i tell her when they play creighton and then she's like "but you don't care about UNC anyway" cause she knows the deal

I was on a cruise for spring break a couple weeks ago (an actual undergrad on tdub ) and my friend and I get onto an elevator with a middle aged couple. We are wearing NC State shirts and the woman makes a comment to the effect of, "Oh you're state fans, that sucks." I ask her if she is a carolina fan, which of course she was. My friend then asked her if she went there and surprise surprise, she didn't. Well we rode the rest of the way to our floor in silence. As we are walking out of the elevator, without turning back I give them the middle finger and tell her to go fuck herself. I didn't see the look on their faces as the doors shut, but my friend said it was priceless.
