I'm a mediocre player, just starting to learn how to bet "properly" with pot odds and all that, though I've done decently well in my weekly game. I only half understand people's irritation at players like me, who don't bet in line with what they have. But if the point of the game is to win everyone else's money through chance, why complain about "idiots" so much, idiots who now have your money? Some strategies may be better than others, but people can bet how they like: it's their money.

What is the best poker website for mediocre players looking to improve? Are they all about the same?

because sure, you have their money, but they know that eventually your mediocre style will cause you to lose and they won't be around to benefit from it. that's my reasoning for getting pissed off anyway...they'll just basically be donking my money off to someone else

There are some hands that no matter what you do you are going to lose. If you min reraise he would shove or call. Seems like you go on some bad streaks.

I agree. A smaller reraise would make your hand look more powerful. Pushing in that situation makes it much tougher to put you on a hand and it looks like a steal. You played it right and got a caller, just had bad luck.

Man, I hate those too. I see a lot of people bet big with mid pocket pairs preflop since they don't know how to play them postflop.

"Hey dman, what's up with all the 45 person turbos? Are those really a positive roi?"

Yeh they aren't hard, just giving them a try of late. Your ROI isn't as high generally as the 180s b/c the structure of the 180s is so top heavy, however i've read that because of the volume of 45s you can play your hourly can actually be a bit higher.

I ran like hot fire today, I think from what i've read maybe 40-50% ROI long term in these things is about as solid as to be expected. But just as an example, here are my numbers for today. You can definitley make some cash money playing them, as all I played today when trying them out was $6 and $12s.

home game blinds 40/80 with 4 people left, on the button with AQs with rock image, push and BB calls with A6o. Flop two spades, turn a 6 and river a blank non spade. I really need to l2calculate m-zone IRL.

People were getting bored, so I figured I would make a post oozing of ignorance.

It was a BS game without much structure, but I guess my M would have been around 6.6 and pushing there was acceptable. I think I was 70% PF and 90% after until the spiked 6 on 4th. But yeah, nothing to see here, move along.

Unbelievable I just can't win these fucking things. This is the first final table I've made this week in ~5 tournaments. 428 players, I get to the last fucking guy. This guy has been playing any two all game, tough to read but he is way too LAGGY to be a good player.

Stage #1760845931 Tourney ID 4448571 Holdem Multi Normal Tournament No Limit 5,000 - 2009-07-08 00:53:48 (ET)
Table: 50 (Real Money) Seat #2 is the dealer

RALLYDURHAM - Shows [10c As] (ace high)
FLOCKFOCKEY Collects 282,858 from main pot
FLOCKFOCKEY Collects Bounty Prize of $2
*** SUMMARY ***
Total Pot(282,858)
Board [5d 9c 6h Ks 8h]
Seat 2: FLOCKFOCKEY (dealer) (small blind) won Total (282,858) HI282,858) with Straight, five to nine [Qs 7s - B:9c,B:8h,P:7s,B:6h,B:5d] BOUNTY awarded: ($2)
Seat 9: RALLYDURHAM (big blind) HI:lost with ace high [10c As - P:As,B:Ks,P:10c,B:9c,B:8h]

2nd place is $145 on a $4 tourney so yeah the ROI is incredible (I have to be at like 1,000% the past week in these things with two second places, a third, and 8th in only 10 tournaments) but I want to win a tournament, not cash in it.

played in a game last night where I managed to have to 2 guys all in PF who both had pocket 9's and I had pocket aces. One of the pocket 9's hit a flush. There may be a longer shot to win, but that one is close.

assuming the 99 that won had neither of your suits (would have highest winning %), it's

as ah %win 95.18
9s 9h 0.02
9c 9d 2.33

that's not as bad as i expected

I had one suit from each of the 9's...so they had a little over a 1% chance of winning, but a 2.5% of chopping it. Having pocket 10's in that situation is slightly better, but their percentage of winning is the same.

I had a fantastic hand on Sunday, started with pocket 8s and ended up with a full house against trip Qs and two pair (As and Qs). There was close to $20 in that pot.

I haven't played much live poker in the last few years but I just got back from a cruise where they had one electronic table, and I played I think 4 nights and ended up +$500 over probably 10 hours of play at $1/$2. Would have been much better had I not lost a $400 hand where I flopped a straight and put a guy all-in who had flopped bottom set..... of course he hit his boat, but I wasn't too distraught on the call. There was no way the guy was laying down anything, much less a set, so no biggie.

I would say out of about 20 people who played regularly there were maybe 3 others who had even a slight clue about how to play the game. These people were there to gambool, that is for sure. There was no way to put anyone on a hand pre-flop, but post flop they might as well have played with their cards face up.

There was a group of people (all absolutely atrocious players) who refered to themselves as "The Pros." This was very ironic because not a single one of them was positive over the cruise. They ALL attributed it to the table being unfair and that the cards would vary as to create action at the table. They said it was impossible to win, so they started a live game 9 floors up. It was funny just how bad these people were, and even funnier how they just didn't know it.

One of the guys said he had a read on me because "I always went all-in preflop when i had AA." This stemmed from a hand where I limped in early position, a guy raised it, got 5 callers, it came around to me and I shoved (at this point the shove was about the size of the pot). So hence, I always just go all-in if I had AA. Great read pal.

Another great moment was when one of "The Pros" started complaining about how much the rake was. I think it was 10% up to $7 a pot, and at about 25 hands/hour it ended up being about the full $175 based on average pot size. Based on this they figured everyone payed about $20/hour to play. I kinda chuckled to myself because what he didn't realize was that he (and many others) were paying closer to $30+ an hour because they called EVERY hand. They were looking at their hand and almost every one of "The Pros" was playing 80%+ of the hands. One of them even played 93% at one point. Now I am not saying there aren't people out there who can play many hands and be successful, but let me tell you these guys were not one of them.

Personally I was playing about 15% of the hands, raising really aggressively with good hands and calling on un-raised pots with low pocket pairs, suited connectors, etc. I think I probably payed about $5 rake per hour. I just sat back, occasionally listened to my Ipod, read Bluff magazine (gg Jon Turner ranked 12 of all online players) and listened to "The Pros". Was a nice week.

Carnival

It was a lot of fun. We got back this morning and they were boarding people to go back and do the exact same itenerary as we had just finished. Eight days, 3 stops.... the Bahamas (x2) and Grand Turk. I had an awesome time but it really got myself itching to play more cards.

Yeah Carnival has the PokerPro tables which are the same as the poker room at xcalibur. I played on a cruise a few years ago and had the same experience. Won about $1200 in ~10-15 hours...

Im pretty sure the company who designs those is based out of charlotte. Would be pretty nice to buy a table and throw it in an empty bedroom. Table would pay for itself very quickly.

The rake is way too high though when you play shorthanded. Last time I played we were getting in 60 hands an hour which was nice but this was with pretty serious players not a cruiseline game.

I've definitely considered just living on a cruiseboat for a couple of months and smoking these games but I think it would get old eventually.

I don't even know why I waste my time playing microstakes MTT's, it's impossible to win when you play against people that don't even have a clue what they're doing.
