holy hell- the credit limit on my credit card tripled between yesterday and today without my asking for it (I'm currently monitoring a triple charge I got from an online vendor which is why I realized this). I know it might sound like an odd request, but I need to figure out how to get it dropped back down... why would they do this?

When I was younger, I had a problem maxing it out, and I found a lower limit drops the amount of financial trouble I can get in. The amount I had (prior to today) was more than enough to cover little emergencies... I really only use it for online shopping now (and the occasional meal to keep activity on it). meh, I guess I don't really need to drop it, just test myself to make sure I don't mess up with it! I have been good about it for the last 4-5 years....

yeah I dont think it'll do you any harm to keep it where it was, unless you are worried about the mental side knowing you have three times as much to spend. Keeping your limit high would reduce your debt ratio. But I'm not a economic person by any stretch so I could be wrong

Mine has somehow never gone up despite being a great customer for several years. Everyone else I know has had theirs go up though. Are they more likely to raise it if you don't carry a balance? Because that seems like it would be the case ... however I don't.
