I get your attempt to backtrack Ernie...but you brought up Sid in response to my post about Crean, then spent a whole post comparing both of their situations:
Quote : | "Crean's first roster was gutted, and he didn't win shit. Sid's first roster was short on depth and long on guys who didn't want to play/couldn't play in his system/got hurt/weren't responding to his coaching style/whatever and he won very little.
Terrible situation = terrible season, bad situation = bad season" |
then you say you're not trying to compare the two.

I'm not fucking comparing their situations. Not on a Sid would have done this at Indiana Crean would have done this here level.
I only pointed out that some of the same people who wouldn't fucking listen when it was explained to them that Sid was put in a rough spot were more than willing to give Crean the benefit of the doubt. The point of that post, which for some reason you just can't wrap your pretty little head around, was simply that. Crean had a terrible situation, produced terrible results; Sid had a bad situation, produced bad results.
There is no comparison between the two situations. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy of the brain-dead retards that surround me.] 2/3/2011 4:18:01 PM |

I'm admittedly new to the "who will our next coach be?" stuff ... I was pulling for Lowe, so didn't really chime in on his potential replacements. I rarely even looked at this thread until now, so I'm sure all my ideas have been discussed somewhere on here.
That said, why not Steve Fisher? I know he's a pretty old dude -- probably mid-60s -- but if we want to turn this program around quickly, he'd be the guy to do it I'd think. He's turned SDSU into a top 10 team for crying out loud. He also won a national title at Michigan. And if Chris Webber wasn't a moron, he'd probably have two to his name.
If it were me, there's no way I'd leave a good gig in San Diego for a perenial pressure-cooker in Raleigh. But he seems crazy enough to do it. 2/3/2011 5:26:50 PM |

Mehhh, you're probably right.
Good article on coach of the year candidates (Fisher is No. 2). Some interesting options maybe? Especially these two
Quote : | "
9) Randy Bennett, Saint Mary's. I wasn't convinced the Gaels deserved to be ranked last week (they fell out of this week's poll), but there is no doubt that Bennett has done a remarkable job both this season and throughout his nine-year tenure. It's not uncommon for a mid-major program to make waves with a hot player every now and again, but Bennett has lost high-caliber players in each of the last two years (Patty Mills in 2009, Omar Samhan in 2010), and yet the Gaels have not lost a step. The best thing Bennett has done is to set up a recruiting pipeline from Australia to Moraga, Calif. And as he is proving once again this season, Bennett knows what to do with good players once he has them.
8) Dave Rose, BYU. I thought of sticking Jim Boeheim in this spot, but he gets penalized for failing to recruit The Jimmer, even though he was right in Boeheim's backyard. Rose, however, does more than just roll the ball out to Fredette and point him toward the basket. The Cougars are ranked 10th overall in Ken Pomeroy's efficiency ratings. They are the 19th-fastest team in the country, they're ranked sixth nationally in points per game -- and yet they only commit 11.1 turnovers per game, which ranks 14th nationally. That is truly remarkable. Rose has taken BYU to the last four NCAA tournaments. I like his chances to make a lot more noise this time around. " |

How about the set where we shoot three pointers or jumpers 6 inches inside the arc with 30+ seconds left on the shot clock while everyone on our team stands there and watches. We run that one an awful lot, it seems.

I don't give a shit if you want to believe it or not. I saw at least 20 possessions against VPI where they looked like they were playing in a pick up game. If those plays were choreographed then we're in a lot bigger trouble than I originally thought.

I really wanted Crean back in 06 after we missed on Barnes and Cal.. i know at one time, he was a "rumored" candidate, but I am pretty sure he never was approached by Coach Fowler..
I also remembered how people really wanted Chris Lowery from S Ill (i was intrigued by him).. and S Ill has been terrible since 06 so i guess it was a good thing we didn't go in that direction
But still, I would love to have Crean, and it would be a HUGE MASSIVE upgrade over what we have now.
Still No. 1 on my "dream" list is Mike Anderson
Realistically though, it will probably be a mid major like Chris Mack
I was also trying to think of all the coaches we went through last time or that were rumored on PackPride or here:
Barnes Cal Wright Mike Montgomery John Beilen Chris Lowery Lon Kruger Steve Lavin Tim Floyd
any others that i'm forgetting?

I did some searching on this via google and as best I could tell this has been removed and he's had a good bill of health for the past year. Wikipedia says he's cleared as well...of course there's always the risk it could come back.
I don't know much about him other than the Phi Slamma Jamma thing.
Anyone know if he's mormon, by chance? I'd imagine that might have a small impact on how willing he'd be to leave if he was.

I was pushing for PJ Carlesimo
The first person who mentions Barnes this time should get thrown off DH Hill.
The first person to test to see if they'd be interested should be Tubby.
The next person I'd offer the job to is Blaine Taylor from ODU. He's coached in this part of the country, he's got NCAA Tournament experience at ODU and Montana, was an assistant on some solid Mike Montgomery Stanford teams that made it deep into the tournament, and he's instantly likable because he has a mustache.

How the fuck do you even measure something like this??
I also have no idea who our next coach could be. With the last search, at least we knew who we would probably go after first. After that it was just a cluster fuck (not to mention the cluster fuck of actually going after those initial coaches).
I honestly don't even want to give it much thought. I just want Yow to go out and do her thing and I'll be excited about whoever she hires. There are no guarantees in college basketball. She could hire someone like Tubby and he could lay a freaking egg or hire a no name who comes in and takes us to the Sweet 16 in his first year. Just seems like an odd description. "Fast-paced offense" would be perfect. The "fastest" team sounds like they measured the 40 times for everybody on the team and took the average. They didn't even specify offense and defense...just said "fastest".
