It's not a matter of why Palpatine had it done because of the order the movies were made-- it's a question of "How are we going to make excuses and justifications that will make sense and cohesively bind the universe without offending anyone's cognitive reasoning abilities?"
There was -some- variation in IV, V, and VI in storm trooper uniforms and Death Star/stardestroyer employees. The technicians wore those silly ass wide brimmed vader-wannabe hats; the red guard is easily distinguishable for obvious reasons; I think the stormtroopers on Endor had different uniforms, too, but someone more knowledgable can confirm that. 5/26/2005 11:04:16 AM |

The troopers on Endor did have different uniforms. I think they were supposed to be scout troopers or something like that. 5/26/2005 11:11:20 AM |

the red quard has been continuous throughout the entire series (even before the clones)
maybe the uniform hasn't been exactly the same, but they've been red and their style hasn't changed all that much

Yes, yes, I am keenly aware that the uniforms themselves are different. The complete lack of color in Stormtroopers is what makes me curious, though. By and large, they are all just white and black (with Sandtroopers being the exception because of their shoulder pauldron). 5/26/2005 11:32:20 AM |

Take a soldier from 20 years ago and a soldier from today and their uniforms will look different. Whether it be functionality or someone thinking that a new beret will improve morale, they're always making changes. 5/26/2005 9:44:28 PM |

I have watched episode VI a few times sence seeing episode III (partly cause it was my favorite and partly cause it was the only thing in blockbuster), and one of the things that sticks out now is that Luke seems to "blindly" support the jedi in the end whereas there was always a conflict with Anakin. Hayden really made it seem like a struggle when he attacked Mace and ultimately sided with the dark side after an emotional battle.
Basically, it seems like Hayden did a better Anakin than Hamil did a Luke. 5/26/2005 9:54:26 PM |

he didn't make it seem like a struggle, he made it seem like he went to the dark side in two minutes. at first he was yelling at mace "it's not the jedi way!!!" and then not two minutes later he was all like "yeah i'll be a sith lord." i thought it was a terrible transformation.5/26/2005 10:03:02 PM |

Initially, it was easy for Luke to side with the good side though. The Jedi were embodied in Obi-Wan Kenobi, his "father" (according to Obi-Wan), and Yoda. The Sith was embodied in the Emperor ("It's not like I like the Empire, I hate it"), and Darth Vader--the man who betrayed and murdered Luke's father AND Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke doesn't have the disgruntled relationship with the Jedi that Anakin had. 5/26/2005 10:04:14 PM |

and if you saw the clone wars cartoon
it wasn't that much of a leap
seemed like his last allegiances were just to padme and obi-wan
and he was already frustrated with those two
the jedi stuff was secondary to his own personal attatchments

You and me both.
I found a nice custom of Commander Bly for you, by the way.
Someone took the red Clone Commander #33 figure and simply repainted it. Pretty good work, I should say.
What I really want is a Commander Cody figure, though. It should come with a removable helmet like the AT-TE Tank Gunner, and should also have a little handheld hologram of Palpatine telling him to execute Order 66. I know the collectors and army builders would jump all over those.

I spent the last half hour slapping together a little page which would have a definitive pic of each of the different types of Clone Troopers from ROTS. There's still a lot of confusion about who is what, so I'm also asking members of the rebelscum.com community to help me finish it. 5/27/2005 11:35:02 AM |

Well they seem to have instant communication with all their troops, so location doesn't really matter.
Then again, in AoTC the commanders did stay behind.

well my main point is that it i figured it would be difficult for a commander to see the big picture if he were out fighting with the troops, but mostly i would think that it would be better to have a safe commander (especially if he is good) than to have him exposed to the same dangers as the grunts.
anyway, it's just a small detail

That's...that's, like, the whole point of the chain of command. Effective leaders are more removed and conduct war in broad strokes; then you have leaders closer to certain centers of action, closer and closer in, until eventually you HAVE to have SOMEONE working directly with the soldiers. The battlefield isn't made up of individuals, you know. What, you think you're gonna get a couple hundred dudes to decide to suit up and go fight some people just because some asshole on the other end of a radio told them to? 5/27/2005 11:58:03 AM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |

^^ i understand the chain of command, i just assumed that these commanders were very high up on it (aren't they something like division or battalion commanders?), but if they aren't then it makes perfect sense for them to be right there with the troops. 5/27/2005 12:02:25 PM |
