Customer: Hi, our proxy doesn't work and I need help fixing the configuration for it.
Coworker: Alright, no problem. Can we start a webex session so I can take a look at it?
Customer: Sure.
Coworker: Ok, can you share your desktop?
Customer: Sure.
Coworker: Ok, can you bring up the web GUI and the command line?
Customer: No.
Coworker: The proxy isn't responding to requests on the management port?
Customer: No.
Coworker: And it's not forwarding any traffic either?
Customer: No.
Coworker: Have you tried connecting to the proxy with a serial cable?
Customer: No.
Coworker: Can you do that?
Customer: No. Should the appliance be on?
Coworker: ...yes?
Customer: Oh, well I don't know how to turn it on. Bye.
Coworker: ...

Maybe the idea was that he didn't know about the privacy controls

but still there are some things you just can't make private, like I heard Facebook even makes shadow profiles for people who aren't logged in but browse sites that use the Like button and similar forms of Facebook integration

An employee used 8GB of data on their cell phone, not a violation or anything but we had a $15 overage so their manager was asked just to give them a heads up about it. Their explanation: I had to download and open some PDF's on my phone. The response: makes sense, we'll up the data plan.

I see you, coworker whose been running netflix or watchESPN or something on their phone

I replaced a user's XP machine with a new Windows 7 computer a couple of days ago and she just came into my office saying, "I was working on a draft of a document the other day and I didn't save it and now I can't find it. I looked in the recycle bin and the network drive and everything. Do you know where it went?"

*facepalm*

^^ I had no idea she had an open document that she didn't save before she logged off. I've fucked up and lost data twice in the nearly 10 years I've been doing this kind of stuff, but this is not one of those times.

Sorry, usually when someone tells me they "didn't save something" they only mean that they didn't put it on their network share folder for personal documents.

I technically-inept-user-translated that incorrectly, my bad

The idea of manually saving a document is unintuitive relic from the days when programmers wrote programs for programmers. Any other human since the dawn of time would assume that if you make a scratch on a rock or a write on a piece of paper, that mark is there for perpetuity unless you take action to erase it.

The idea that all changes are set in stone is an outdated relic from the days when historical records were scratches on rocks or written on pieces of paper. Any other human that has lived in the past 20 years would assume digital changes are non-permanent unless you take action to store them.

The idea that all changes are either automatically set in stone or require manual action to save is a false dichotomy from the days when antiquated programmers assumed that all users followed the same workflow. Any other human that has lived in the past 10 years would assume digital changes are versioned and automatically archived so as to have a perpetual record of not just a document, but its history.

I contract with a for profit university for people soft shit and this woman just called to say that every time she runs a report it gives her data for her old campus location.

ME: did you submit your nett form to HR to let IT know to update your visibility and campus security?

Woman: NO

Me: how are we supposed to know you moved to a different location?

woman: good point. I will speak to manager and take care of it.

We still have PeopleSoft 7.5 running at work... Granted most of it's functionality has been taken over by a custom internally built app, but we still depend on it for some stuff. So I agree... FUCK PEOPLESOFT!

Ok so I'm visiting our offices in Denver and one of our directors has a Dell u2711. Really nice 27" 2560 by 1440 resolution monitor. He's been running it using a VGA cable for the better part of a year at like 2048x1152 and it looks horrible. My biggest pet peeve is when people don't know how to operate a monitor. Not only that but our IT department doesn't even have any display port or HDMI cables (laptops don't have DVI). Grrr.

not sure if this should go here, earlier this week a contractor "accidentally" knocked off one of our Liebert FPC racks. Needless to say that did not go over well.

I'm not sure what is sadder, that I can add something to this thread everyday or that the reason is my co-workers. Sadly I'm in IT, granted the bottom rung of IT, but still.

Co-worker 1 -
-Could not see today's email in Outlook. She collapsed the 'Today' group. Told me it's been that way for a couple of weeks.
-Did not know how to update Adobe Flash. Was scared to click on it.
-Did not know how to sort files within a folder. Kept complaining that it was hard for her to find the most recent document.

Co-worker 2-
-repairs computers on the side and asks me for help
-didn't know you could download a driver on a disk and install/update that way
-kept insisting to folks to install XP because it was the best. Completely surprised to hear it's losing it's support next year. He's now worried about updating his pc to 7

What blows me away is people like that can still get good fucking jobs

Of course, I'm the piece of shit that looks at supposed job requirements and unless I am a master of everything listed, I take myself out of contention.

I have no idea how they manage. Just thankfully they have no real desire to move up in the ranks and take advantage of the company paying for our certs.

^That I understand. What got me was the complete lack of knowledge of Flash even though a couple of months ago we went through the same thing updating it then and a few months before that. This third time I had to get up and leave and told her to call the service desk and ask.

lol

Not indicative of the company, more like they really just don't care about growth in their jobs and do enough to get by.

My department is the bottom rung of the ladder. Basically all we do is monitor our data center. Our company spent $80 - $110 million the past two years on IT upgrades alone. They're switching our department from a computer ops model over to a NOC model and are offering training and certs to go with it and help prepare us.

The company is a good place. Just like any place though there's always going to be a bad apple. Just so happens I work with them.

Hopefully in a couple of months I'll have passed the first cert and can move to something else. When I pass it I'll get a raise and promotion to go with it. Which would be funny since I'm the newest hire and the other folks had a six month head start....lol

Me: What's your merchant ID? We need to put it in the config to get your CC processing going.

Client: Oh I don't know. I don't think anyone here has that info.

Me: Good job running your business.

Heard from an att friend that some new att hire was "installing" u-verse at a nice house, started drilling to the outside of the house from the garage, hit brick and kept drilling even though he wasn't making any progress because he was using a wood bit. Ends up causing so much friction that it started a fire within the walls and burned down a 400k house.

Try texting back to anyone "Sorry... I didn't catch that... could you say that again?"

You'd be surprised how many people will re-text what they just sent you.
