"Decades-old Raleigh music venue to be torn down

A longtime local music venue in Raleigh will be torn down on Monday to make room for a proposed mixed-use development on the western end of Hillsborough Street, city officials said Sunday.

The Brewery, at 3009 Hillsborough St., had already closed its doors Sunday, after more than 28 years in business. No one could be reached for comment there.

According to The Brewery's website, acts have been booked into November. It wasn't clear whether those shows would be canceled or relocated.

The neighboring Katmandu bar and Time Out restaurant will also be torn down in the coming weeks, city officials said.

The demolition is part of an ongoing revitalization effort on Hillsborough Street, which neighbors North Carolina State University's campus. Roundabouts were built last spring to make the busy thoroughfare more pedestrian-friendly and now city leaders are paving the way for plans to bring in a new retail venue with a flagship Kerr Drugs store.

Those proposals, which would require zoning changes, are in the hands of the city's planning commission, Mayor Charles Meeker said. He said he expects that they'll go before city council in early September.

"I haven't been to The Brewery in years, so to me, it's a good change," Meeker said, "We hoped there would be a good deal of redevelopment on Hillsborough Street after the recent pedestrian project was put in with the roundabouts. Now we're starting to see that."

Across the street, managers of the East Village Grill are giving the restaurant a facelift before students return for North Carolina State University's fall semester. They said they're excited for the changes on Hillsborough Street.

"From a professional side, you always like to see things have a fresh face. It's good and it's good for business," said Eric Tannery, project manager for renovations at the East Village Grill."

Anyone know if they are having the street festival again this year (I think it was late September)?

Signage for Chipotle is up. They actually recessed the store front to give it a small outdoor area similar to Porter's.

^thats awesome. I think I remember reading that they hope to open in September, but I am guessing October.

I think restaurant owners and city government/citizens are finally starting to respect the overall benefits to outdoor (and even rooftop) seating. The more the better.

I think it's more about girls slutting it up on the weekend and then wanting to have brunch outside with 2 or 3 friends and joke about which one of them is more of a Samantha.

I think this has something to do with it, but Quodoba could probably give a shit about smokers, and most restaurants, shops, etc. probably feel the same way. As for more traditional bar/late night spots, this probably has something to do with it.

Speaking of the rooftops, I had heard last year that Porter's was going to open a rooftop patio area. Wonder if that got completely nixed, or just put on hold?

Chipotle is going to do really well on Hillsborough St. yeah, it's a chain, but it will have better food than 99% of the other restaurants on that strip.

I had heard this as well.

Quote :
"Urban Food Group is also looking to make changes to its other Hillsborough Street restaurant, Porter's. The menu will soon be updated, and plans have been filed with the city for a rooftop dining area that will seat at least 50 people.

Depending on how long it takes to work out the details, both projects could be done by the fall. That's about the time the construction project that has turned Hillsborough Street into a mess is supposed to be done.

"

Drove by the future Chipotle this morning on the way home from the airport. It looks really good. Is there another option for convenience store goods in that area now that the Bazaar is gone? The funky store next to Gumby's with all of the lights might be the closest option now, or the Belltower mart (which may not be long for this world).

Even after losing this one, Hillsborough Street is not hurting for convenience stores, the two you mention plus the on-campus c-store at the Atrium which is basically on Hillsborough Street are probably the closest.

In addition to those three, we also have the Wolf Mart across from Dan Allen and the College Beverage next to East Village.

Hillsborough has plenty of convenience stores.

The headshop Kitsch that replaced the comic book (the one between Amore's and FreshBerry) store sucks.

wat

isn't "David's Dumplings" the same thing as "the former location of Darryl's?"

basically, what is being torn down?

^^^For some reason I thought the land they're talking about was what's behind Sadlacks and down towards the roundabout, because it says it includes parking area for David's Dumpings, which is behind Player's Retreat.
