hopefully they can win next week and make some noise in the playoffs

Jaws just said that he thinks Rivers is having a 'mvp-caliber season' b/c he's carried the team (no running game or defense). Again, out-dated measures of qb success (zomg, his team can only be 8-8, fuck his mvp chances!@!) will assure he won't sniff the mvp (as opposed to Matt Ryan, a whopping 15-9 td:int ratio w/ one of the best rbs in the league)
How long until sports writers bother to watch more than 2-3 games a week & actually give a look to stats? 12/22/2008 5:50:12 PM |

^^, ^^^
Rivers blew his shot at MVP with game-losing turnovers against Buffalo and New Orleans. He also played like shit against Pittsburgh, although most QB's do. He has redeemed himself with clutch play against KC and a flawless game against Tampa, but Peyton Manning has been better and more clutch down the stretch.
Rivers has established himself as a top QB in the league. Alccolades will come with time. If they can get to the playoffs and make some noise, his Pro-bowl snub will be all the more glaring. They'll play Indy if they win Sunday, and he'll have a chance to bounce the favored Colts from the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season.

Why does ESPN continue to perpetuate this image of Rivers? Every time they talk about rivers, they show the clip of him waving bye to cutler.
Whenever they talk about Haynesworth being a great defensive player, they don't show the clip of him stomping on a lineman's head. 1/2/2009 12:32:10 PM |

Its because he isn't like any other QB in the league, with the exception of Favre, Philip plays with the fire and joy of a kid. Unfortunately Brett is still around so Philip is regarded as a freak show, also Philip isn't a diabetic so they can't feel sorry for him like they do with Cutler.
Plus ESPN only hypes one person on West Coast teams and his teams hype player is LT2 1/2/2009 12:47:47 PM |

without that fluke TD during that defensive substitution... manning didn't play any better than rivers.
58% 238 0 0
56% 217 0 1
and Rivers made some clutch throws at the end of the game when it counted. helped put SD in a position to win along with sproles.
Chargers won.. hence the checkmate.

I'm not saying Rivers is the reason why San Diego won...I'm just saying Peyton didn't play that much better than him...if at all.
I can think of three dropped interceptions by the Chargers secondary off the top of my head. Rivers had one INT and one, maybe two missed INTs by the Colts secondary (although I can really only think of that at the end of the game that would have been a really tough catch for the DB...the one forced throw to Jackson).
Other than that...the Chargers ran a lot more than Indy. So Manning had a lot more opportunities to get yards. Rivers made the throws when he needed to and threw it away when he needed to. He didn't lose the game for the Chargers and Peyton didn't win the game for the Colts.
I don't see what you can argue with about that. 1/4/2009 1:26:04 AM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
Manning had no running game, Chargers were dropping back a lot of people into coverage knowing that he had to throw. Rivers overthrew a lot of receivers, include the TE with the retardedly long name wide open in the first half. I dont give a crap about yards, that has nothing to do with it, I wasnt saying Manning had more yards therefore he was better... just saying that it wasnt Manning choking, or Rivers knocking Manning out of the playoffs etc. I KNEW people would act this way as soon as the game was over, KNEW it

Neither QB played an amazing game, but manning probably played better. Rivers threw 2 to the D, 1 was caught, Manning threw 3 to the D, none were caught.
Manning had a great throw when the defense wasn't ready. It was an easy throw, but I give him credit for recognizing the D wasn't ready.
In the end though, it doesn't matter that much. Rivers played well enough to win. That 11 yard scramble and dive was CLUTCH.
