Well it worked so well with "The Decision" that they probably figured why not try and squeeze some of the same juice in college football.

Apparently, big boy football schools are fine with letting a 3-year starter come in and compete for a starting job in the fall.

Maybe this will kill Wisconsin's team chemistry!!! Little do they know the perils of adding a record-breaking, experienced QB to your roster.

I'm inclined to lock this thread since his decision has been made and this will serve to be is a hate/bash RW/TOB thread. Feel free to talk about RW here:

Unless I get any legit objections to it, I'll lock this one tomorrow.

He may not win it, but if Wisconsin makes a BCS bowl this year, RW will be a finalist. Esp bc all of the sportscasters are already on board the RW and they will attribute Wisconsin's success to the addition of him to the roster...

I know that i missed the bus a while back,

But how did we let this happen? If he were to play ball next year, why not at NC State?

You know when all of this happened with his release I thought that it was just technical jargon, but now he is gone and playing for another school.

You guys are kidding yourself if you don't think that this is epic NC State shit. Prolly the worst ever.

Some people like leaders who are completely risk averse, demand that people submit to loyalty tests, are inflexible, and pick their favorites over their top performers.

Wilson's ceiling next year is getting obliterated by an SEC defense in the national title game

I see him barely winning double digit games and having a respectable year

If he stayed, whats the point of even recruiting Glennon if he only would have 1 year of eligibility after RW left

Wisconsin has some major holes to fill, and it just took care of its biggest piece.

Former NC State star Russell Wilson might not be the most popular quarterback in Wisconsin, but until the NFL figures out what its doing, Aaron Rodgers will have to share the spotlight.

In one of the more interesting transfers in recent years, Wilson, the former franchise NC State quarterback, had a choice to leave school and play baseball for the Colorado Rockies farm system or take one more year to try to make something out of his college football career. One of the best ACC playmakers over the last few seasons, Wilson threw for 8,545 yards and 76 touchdowns with just 26 interceptions – starting out with a brilliant 17 TD, one pick freshman campaign – and also ran for 1,083 yards and 17 scores. As good as he was for NC State, he had a unique opportunity to go elsewhere as a sort of free agent who could put a great team over the top. Claiming he wanted to play “big time college football” - take that, ACC - he was trying to decide between Auburn and Wisconsin with the ability to step in to a great situation at either school.

According to various reports, his visit to Wisconsin went about as perfect as possible, and while he would've put up huge numbers in Gus Malzahn's Auburn offense, the Badgers are a better fit for what he's looking for. The Tigers are rebuilding, and while the addition of Wilson might be the difference between a good season and another special one, he wasn’t going to be Cam Newton and there was no way he'd ever be able to live up to the lofty, shoe-filling expectations.

Winning the national title is going to be next to impossible for Auburn this year coming out of the loaded and improved SEC West, but with the right breaks Wilson could take the Badgers to the title game. His signing overcomes a slew of other issues.

From defensive coordinator Dan Doeren – who left to take over the head coaching gig at Northern Illinois – to several key veteran on the offensive line, to J.J. Watt from the defensive front, to a few key veterans gone on both sides of the ball, the Badgers lost several important parts to the team that was devastating and dominant at times last year.

It’s Wisconsin, so the loss of an Outland Trophy blocker like Gabe arimi isn’t as painful as it would be at most schools; there are more big, talented offensive linemen ready to step up. Watt's departure from the defensive front hurts, but the coaching staff appears to have a good plan in place with several players stepping up this offseason to manufacture more pressure from various spots.

TThe running game will still be devastating, the defense will be solid, and the kicking game should be good, but none of the positives matter for a team with Big Ten title aspirations if the quarterback situation couldn’t be settled.

Problem solved. br />
TThe running game will always be what makes the Wisconsin attack go, but Scott Tolzien was the difference between playing somewhere in Florida on New Year's Day and going to Pasadena. The yards might not have been there, but Tolzien was terrific leading the nation’s fourth most efficient passing game and showing his senior leadership time and again – up until the poor two-point conversion attempt in the final moments against TCU. Wilson doesn’t have to be Peyton Manning, or Cam Newton, but he can be more than Tolzien.

All he has to do is hand the ball off, hang out behind a massive offensive line, and use his accuracy and decision-making ability to give the Badgers a balanced attack that can get vertical. He doesn't have to take the entire offense on his back with the usual pounding coming from the tremendous stable of backs.

And now, all of a sudden, Wisconsin is a player. The spring session was disastrous with dual-threat quarterback Curt Phillips getting knocked out for a second straight year with a knee injury, Jon udmayr struggling mightily, and with no one else taking the job by the horns. What was the team’s glaring weakness could now be the second biggest strength behind the ground game.

The Leaders is there for the taking with Ohio State weakened and wounded, Penn State looking good, but hardly special, and with Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue all mediocre. The schedule is more than manageable with UNLV, Oregon State, Northern Illinois (played in Chicago), and South Dakota to use as tune-ups before facing Nebraska in Camp Randall. Outside of the trip to Soldier Field, the Badgers don’t play a true road game until October 22nd at Michigan State, followed up by a date at Ohio State. Win those two games, and New Orleans on January 9th is in play instead of Pasadena on January 2nd.

And that’s where Wilson comes in. He might have regressed a bit last year after pressing too much, throwing 14 picks including three in the loss to East Carolina and three more against Virginia Tech, but he also threw for 362 yards against the Hokies and threw for 322 against the Pirates. He won’t have to throw the ball 40 times a game, or 60 times like he did against Maryland, and he won’t have to press in the Badger offense. The big lights and the big stage shouldn’t faze him with his 36 games of experience to rely on, but he also has to try to fit in. Can he handle being the missing piece rather than the main man?

Wisconsin will be all too happy to find out.

It's really quite simple and it goes like this:

1) Coach saw Russell's struggles at times last year and knowing we were losing a lot of WR experience said that whoever starts at QB next season needs to be at spring ball.
2) Russell said thanks but no thanks, I will be playing baseball in the spring.
3) Coach said thanks but no thanks then, Glennon will be our starter and you are welcome to come back at your convenience in the back up roll.
4) Russell said fine, thinking he wasn't coming back anyway but then started not playing baseball so hot
5) Russell says coach, I THINK I'm going to come back but I'm still not sure
6) Coach says, that's great, we'd love to have you, but you will still be returning in a back up roll
7) Russell says, wtf? you were serious?
8) Coach says, yes son, you know I'm a man of my word, I'm trying to build a program here and needed my QB's full time to have the best chance to build on last year's success with an inexperienced crop of WR's
9) Russell says fine then, I want my release
10) Coach says here you go, best of luck
11) Russell starts out saying he's doing this for everyone, but then comes out the next day "I don't want to leave, I want to come back, but it was clear I wasn't getting an equal opportunity to compete for the starting roll (whenever I felt like showing back up that is)"
12)The media starts with their nonsense. Oh Russell wanted to come back, he will be ready to play in June (nope) Hasn't even talked with the guys that sign his checks
13) makes a decision (finally) and will play with Wisconsin, probably ending his baseball career.

^He shouldn't have to compete for a roll that he has already carried is in. Thats whats bullshit about it. Its not fair that RW hasn't built any equity with TOB through all he has done. How could he possibly be on a level playing field with Glennon?

That twitter article jaybee posted was bullshit. I had a bad feeling the media would spin this whole thing as "Wilson wanting to play for a big time team and just leaving"

^ no collegiate athlete should have the power to hold a program hostage. That is kind of what RW did. It is completely fair to make glennon the starter and have RW compete for his job back.

If Wilson was ready to give up baseball (at least for this year) he should have stuck around for spring ball like everyone else. His decision proves he could have been here for spring ball.

He needed to "test the waters" and see how this season went. Once he saw he was a terrible hitter, it was time to come back.

I don't understand why TOB coudn't have done like every other coach and prepared to play without RW then if he came, inserted him. You know, what Wisconsin is doing on June/28. I bet Glennon put him in a hard place by asking to transfer and TOB was like "wait a second, let me see what Wilson is going to do"

This has been in the works for a long time (Russell participating in Senior Day). Glennon is the guy TOB is willing to hang his coaching future on. He's not the type of guy to come out and blow a bunch of smoke up everyone's ass if he really didn't think Glennon was the guy. He's not going to put his job in jeopardy if he doesn't think Glennon is the guy. It sucks, but this is what's best for all parties involved. I'd rather lose Russell a year early while we have a good back up plan than end up with Imhoff or whoever at the helm a year from now. That said, I will be cheering for him and Wisconsin.

Yeah, have everyone practice all offseason learning one set of plays and getting used to glennon running those plays then switch to a different set of plays with a different QB at the last minute. That's assuming glennon didn't decide to transfer only to have russell stay w/ baseball.

Wisconsin didn't have jack at QB, and from what I hear, after the terrible spring performances of the QB prospects for this season they were falling all over themselves to find another option.

Because, as has been said SEVERAL times, we basically have a new receiving corp. Russell had timing issues last year with the seniors, how do you think it was going to be with new receivers--no chemistry. When Russell decided to play baseball, we formatted the team and offense around Glennon and back to the pro style offense they had at BC with Matt Ryan, etc as that is the type of offense they like to run, but we couldn't do that with Russell and with the undeveloped O-Line he came in with.

Last season Russell could plug himself in and go, this season he could not.

^^^Good point. If TOB promises Russell the starting job if he returns, Glennon transfers, Russell tears it up in baseball, Russell decides to forgo his 4th year and concentrate on baseball. Where does that leave us? I don't think TOB could have made any other decision.

Interesting thing here is that Wisconsin's expected starter was a dual-threat QB who ended up blowing up his knee, so I'd say that its safe to assume that they are well prepared for a great dual threat QB like Russell.

This decision was more an investment for the future of the program (2012 season) than it is for right now.

Option 1: Take your chances on Wilson. Maybe he returns, maybe he doesn't. The team is held hostage. Anxiety builds in the locker room - receivers work out together but don't know who the QB will be. Meanwhile, Glennon is tired of this shit and transfers. Assume the worst-case scenario: Wilson sticks with baseball and doesn't return. Glennon is gone, and now we're left with Imhoff and Brosius for 2011. Even if Wilson returns, he's only around for 2011. Then 2012 comes, Glennon transferred last year, and Brosius, a sophomore, is depended on to compete against Tennessee in the first game of the season.

Option 2: Take matters into your own hands. Grant Wilson a release and move on with your prize jewel recuit Glennon. You know he's gonna be around this spring to work with the offense. The 2012 season starts and we have a returning senior QB to lead a veteran team.
