Here's a list of all our all americans, probably a starting place for objectively picking a starting five (although we did this a few years ago too).

I never really watched Gugliotta because I was like 8 when he played. Was he better than Warren? Serious question. Warren only had two seasons and was ACC POY in his Sophomore season. Gugliotta averaged 11 pts his sophomore season while TJ averaged 25.

he was a better rebounder and three-point shooter than TJ.

not saying Googs would have won a POY award otherwise, but keep in mind that where TJ had to shoulder pretty much the entire load last year, Googs played most of his years with at least a couple other good-to-great scorers (Monroe, Corch, Chucky Brown, Brian Howard, Kevin Thompson, etc.) taking their fair share of shots

Normally, I would give journalists a pass but this is pretty bad. How do you leave out one of the greatest in college hoops? I mean this is the guy that caused Jordan to grow up a State fan and whom he modeled his game after, tisk tisk.

Yes. I'm not sure if State actually recruited him, I don't know if he was that highly recruited. Coming out of high school, I don't think he showed any real signs of going on to be one of the best players in the world.

Dean Smith heavily recruited him after he saw Jordan's will to win in a basketball camp in high school. Jordan got offers from Duke & State but by then it was too late as Smith already built a relationship with him.

That's why the whole "growing up a UNC fan" thing from Space Jam was bullshit.

Article fails to mention that he is still below 10 ppg.

45% from the field, considering how many jump shots he takes, isn't bad. And I'll take 50% from 3 any day.

He's averaging less than 20 mpg and 6 ppg in the last five games, including only 7 minutes and two points against louisville and 13 minutes and 2 points against WF.

I can relate to Washington because I feel like he plays like I played. Seems like everything is going 200mph in his head when he gets the ball. Amazing that he shoots as well as he does with as spastic as he is.

45% is fucking terrible for a big man. Big men need to shoot much higher than that, and they do that by taking close range shots, not jumpers. And he sucks at rebounding and he sucks at defense. And he doesn't draw any FTs.

He's either a shitty big man or a shitty guard.

I'd rather have Lacey taking any shot than Washington taking a jumper.

As it turns out, Washington takes the biggest percentage of shots on the team, even more than Lacey. That's insane. Guy's a ball hog

Why is the VT game on ESPN2 but when we play UNC it will be on ESPN3?

Are the Tarheel alumni at the network so paranoid that we will beat them on national television?

I feel like a say this every game. I like that Washington has the jump shot in his arsenal, but I only want him shooting it if he's wide open and the shot clock is getting low. It gives us almost no chance at an offensive rebound if he misses and often leads to a fast break for the other team.

Still, I'd rather have him shooting 15 foot jumpers than trying anything in the post. Spastic is the perfect word for him down there. There's just nothing natural and fluid about his game.

that's not true, unless you meant on a per-minute basis, which even still there is a negligible difference between Lacey and Washington.

in theory, washington has nba size for the 4, a jump shot that extends to three point range and is long/springy which would lead you to believe he's fairly athletic

then you watch him play and it's like he discovered the sport 6 months ago and learned how to run maybe a year before that

Are schedule is not as easy as y'all are making it out to be from here on out. 3-2 is definitely more realistic than 4-1.

In terms of being optimistic, then I would say that 3-2 is more reasonable than 4-1, and 2-3 would just suck.

No reason at all for us to lose to VT or BC. Both are horrible. UNC is obviously the toughest game on the slate, but both the Clemson and Syracuse games will be difficult. Clemson always plays us tough in Littlejohn and that Syracuse game will be their last game of the season so you know they will be playing hard.

The difference between our record and UNC is 2 ACC wins and 3 wins overall.

Had we made that one extra basket ore one less foul called ugainst us when we played Wofford, Wake, ND...or even against UNC the first time...and we still wouldn't be ranked #15, even with our stellar strength of schedule.

^^ good point, but note that UNC's SOS(RPI) is just barely behind ours - and they are at #3 overall. Their schedule has also been tough in all fairness.

in other news, interesting point that seems to be even better sway towards an NCAAT bid if we can win at least 2 of the next 3. Esp if the committee looks more at our big wins than our wtf losses:
Quote :
"Last weekend, the NCAA held its annual media mock selection exercise. We've attended in the past, and it really is an informative, insightful and insanely nerdy way to get a better understanding of the committee's select-and-seed workflow. Every year, we pay close attention to what new attendees write afterward, because -- amid the typical revelations about the NCAA's proprietary software and the bewilderment at the many seeding requirements -- there are usually a few nuggets worth keeping in mind.

For example: This week, one committee member told Grantland's Mark Titus: "I care more about who you can beat than who can beat you." Do big wins matter more than bad losses? Detroit Free Press writer Joe Rexrode told his readers that the mock committee looked at "every possible number and intangible measure of quality," including "individual players who make a team more viable -- such as Green Bay point guard Keifer Sykes." That sounds like a new idea, but it could easily explain NC State's surprise T.J. Warren-led bid last season. "

UNC deserves credit for beating UCLA, Florida, and Ohio State. And no way were they going to beat Kentucky.

But since ACC play started they haven't been terribly impressive. Against the other ACC ranked teams, UNC is 1-4 and we are 2-3. Considering how close the first game was, I just don't think they are that much better than we are, they just don't have any embarrassing losses.

All three of those teams you want to give UNC credit for will be unranked next week.

Florida is terrible. UCLA isnt much better. And OSU is #24 and about to go down to Michigan.

Now we have successfully discredited all their wins. Their record against current ranked teams will be 1-6 I think cuz they beat Louisville by 1 at home

UNC is 15 to our 45 in Pomeroy.

13 to our 46 in the RPI.

They actually only have one more top 100 win than us but we have a few bad losses they don't.

I really hate this play in nonsense where you have to play in for an 11 or 12 seed.

The worst teams should have to play in for 16 seeds regardless of automatic qualifiers etc.

Lunardi's new bracket almost has us in the "first four byes" category. In the ESPN Insider odds it has us with 12% chance of making the S16 and 0.8% for the Final Four.

UNC is at 56% and 6.4% respectively

UVA at 80%, 40% respectively and 10.9% for winning it all.

He's actually got Gonzaga with the second highest chance to win it all with UK at 32.9% for winning it all

^^^Lunardi's bracket is usually pretty spot-on as far as who makes the tourney, but Gonzaga with the 2nd best chance of winning the whole thing?...Really? They've only made it past the Sweet 16 once and that was to the Elite 8 back in 1999. Not sure why he would think it'll be any different this year.
