noticed some changes in google reader today
there's an options popup in the feeds pane (sort by alphabetical or "my order" - drap-n-drop) and when you press n/p to navigate through posts, the scrollbar moves to keep the next post at the top 9/23/2008 7:16:17 PM |

here's a new service to bring you direct quotes from politicians on a topic you pick (or quotes that contain the word you pick) http://labs.google.com/inquotes/
and some significant drawbacks to the G1 and the Android platform http://gizmodo.com/5053747/android-and-t+mobile-g1s-five-most-obnoxious-flaws
Quote : | "Topping the list, it's tightly integrated with your Google account—so tightly that you can only use one Google account with the phone. If you want to switch to another account, you have to do a whole factory reset. " |
i'm curious if this is going to be an Android-wide feature, or if the G1 was able to choose this option somehow
Quote : | "As mentioned, there is no desktop syncing app. It's all about the cloud—your Google contacts and cal are considered the masters. So if it's all on your desktop or god forbird, MobileMe, you've gotta move it over to your Google account." |
Quote : | "No multitouch on the G1 and there never will be, since the panel itself doesn't support it. However, Googlers said they expected a full touchscreen device with multitouch in the future. The lack of a headphone jack, though kinda common for HTC devices, is pretty galling, especially for a consumer device. Mini-USB adapters are annoying as hell." |
comment on that - Android provides multitouch support. the G1 does not. It is going to be a real pain in the ass for developers to create applications with multitouch, but not know if the phone those applications run on will support that feature.
Quote : | "You've gotta have an SD card for any kind of music or video playback, once the latter arrives—there's no internal storage for media playback. " |
Quote : | "after you've used 1GB of data, T-Mobile will slow you down to 50Kbps for the rest of the month. " |

I agree with the last comment ...
After having worked on an iPhone app, it would be a total PITA to worry about which features are available on which phones, and to try to develop an app that autosenses the different hardware options regarding user interface, I/O, etc.
But, lots of phones will run it, so its sorta a lose lose for developers ... we want to grow our product, but doing so will be painful. 9/24/2008 11:20:40 AM |

not sure if that's possible, given the nature of how the internet has grown..... I mean, i guess it's possible that there were some obscure phrases that someone had on a website at one point that they have since removed, but it's almost certain that that phrase was copied and archived somewhere else where they don't have control 10/1/2008 9:55:46 AM |

^^ apparently there were ads in 2001 already. They sanitized the special 2001 search page. And they used an even older logo, from the late 90's. By 2001 they already had the cleaner, more professional logo http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-10-01-n76.html

Mail Goggles: A breathalyzer test for your Gmail http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081007-mail-goggles-a-breathlyzer-test-for-your-gmail.html
Quote : | "Called "Mail Goggles," the Gmail add-on makes sending e-mail from Gmail more difficult during certain times that you can set manually (while sober, that is). How does it do this? If you have Mail Goggles installed—which you can do by going to the "Labs" tab under your Gmail settings and turning them on—it will force you to answer a series of math questions before sending out any new messages. [...] If you get any of the questions wrong, Mail Goggles will say, "Water and bed for you. Or try again."" |

http://labs.mozilla.com/2008/10/introducing-geode/
future versions of Firefox plan on supporting the new W3C Geolocation Specification, which adds the native ability for Web sites to request, and you to optionally grant access to, your location. We’re still working out the specifics, but we’re hoping that location will be provided by one or more user selectable service providers and methods, e.g. GPS-based, WiFi-based, manual entry, etc. You’ll be able to play with this in the upcoming beta releases of Firefox 3.1, as well as alpha releases of Fennec.
... You can download Geode here. https://people.mozilla.com/%7Edolske/dist/geode/geode-latest.xpi
To see Geode in action you can check out the demo Food Finder, which shows you the cafes and restaurants within walking distance. http://azarask.in/local 10/7/2008 5:14:01 PM |

New version of Gmail for your Mobile devices (Blackberry and J2ME) ...
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2008/10/introducing-gmail-for-mobile-20.html
I've noticed a -huge- improvement in performance, and its usability is much more refined.
Also, you can use the same client for Gmail-proper or GAfYD email accounts, including having multiple accounts usable from the same client.
Can also save multiple drafts now instead of just one. Although I wouldn't be able to tell you when I needed to do so, I guess someone did need it. 10/23/2008 5:55:34 PM |

^^^ click on my maps - you can create placemarks and also search - after the placemarks are there - you can print the map and give it to someone - i don't think you can share it though electronically with the search results currently though (although they could replicate the search) 10/24/2008 9:40:22 AM |

Google Launches Google Apps Labs, Third Party Developers Welcome http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/10/28/google-launches-google-apps-labs-third-party-developers-welcome/
Quote : | "Google is launching Google Apps Labs today, a new platform for experimental apps (Google Moderator is one of the first to be added).
These are third party applications that can be added by businesses and schools using Google Apps. In addition to Google Moderator, two other apps are available now: Google Code Reviews (peer review of software code) and Google Short Links (change URLs to something shorter and more descriptive).
What’s most interesting about the announcement is that Google will be opening up the platform to third party developers who want their apps to be available to the “million-plus businesses” using Google Apps today. " |

Gmail Labs Adds Text Messaging Feature. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/10/31/gmail-labs-adds-text-messaging-feature-kthxbai/
Quote : | "The first time you send a text message, it will appear on the person’s phone as coming from a number in the 406 area code. Google has made several thousands of these numbers available for Gmail users, and once a number is associated with your account, all of the text messages you send through Gmail will come from that number.
The 406 number works both ways, so your friend can reply to you via text message. Also, your friend can save that number in their phone as belonging to you, and they can even use it to initiate new chats with you." |
