It really doesn't change anything.
Here is what the fallout wiki page says.
Quote : | "In the DLC Broken Steel, if the player had chosen to contaminate the purifier with the Modified FEV, the medical facility of every city is filled with new patients dying from FEV poisoning. The new patients hold their stomachs and repeat dialogue along the lines of, "it burns on the inside." When the player speaks with the doctor at any given town, they state that the condition is not contagious. In Rivet City, Dr. Preston comments that they are burning the corpses just to be safe. In Megaton, Doc Church comments along the lines of, "it would be ironic if we were so used to the crap we had been drinking that pure water is killing us."" |

definately the best game of 2008 (in my book), only reason i sold it is because i didn't think any DLC would come out on the ps3 (obviously i was uber mistaken). 10/28/2009 6:24:11 PM |

I've already played through the regular game twice and am going through the DLCs now. I think the part I like best about Broken Steel was increasing the level cap to 30. I'd like it to go even higher but I've already maxed out all the really important skills so I guess I would like to level up more just for the extra perks 10/28/2009 6:32:06 PM |

So if you were creating a new character, how would you divvy up the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points as well as the skill points during your first few level ups?
As far as skills, I gather the most important, in no particular order, are Speech, Lockpick, Science, Small Arms, Repair? Medicine?
How about S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points? Agility seems good because of extra AP points...dunno about charisma even though personally I like the unique speech options
I figure some of you know this game VERY well, whereas I've played it all of about 10-15 hours, so I'm hoping some of you have some nice feel about the most effective way to build up a character 10/29/2009 9:41:25 PM |

Most important are small guns, lockpick OR science, and either repair if you fight a lot or speech if you talk a lot. 10/29/2009 10:00:00 PM |

i don't remember the exact numbers, but i started with strength around 4-5, perception around 8, endurance around 8-9, charisma around maybe 2 or 3, intelligence at 9 or 10, agility around 4, and luck around 3 or 4. my friend started the game at the same time as me but made charisma, agility and luck around 9 or 10 and everything else pretty damn low. he put a lot of his points on sneak, speech and small guns.
he hasn't had many problems so far (he's around level 16 or 17), but since his intelligence was so low starting out he doesn't get many skill points to allocate when he levels up. meanwhile when i was at his level i had already maxed out energy weapons, repair, medicine and lockpick and was able to start allocating a lot more skill points to other skills and make my character more multidimensional. i also used the intense training perk a few times to raise some of my S.P.E.C.I.A.L skills some more.
my friend has to sneak around all the time and gets a lot of critical hits, but he also can't repair his guns without having to travel to megaton or some other place. he also has to pick up all kinds of items along the way to sell so he has the money to buy everything he needs. since i maxed out my repair skill so soon and had such high intelligence, i've been able to keep all of my weapons and armor constantly maintained between 75-100% condition and deal more damage than i would be able to otherwise whereas my friend has to rely on high luck and critical hits.
my friend also has been able to do things differently by talking his way out of them with his high speech skill (i.e. talking his way out of moira brown's wasteland survival guide quest), and he's had some cool things happen with it, but i could really care less about that shit and kind of prefer having to do things the hard way since the game is so massive and i get to travel around and do more stuff. he also has to constantly keep certain apparel items on him at all times so he can pick average locks (he thinks he was smart by leaving his lockpick at 45 so putting on some apparel raises it to 50 so he can pick the lock ), but he doesn't have access to hard and very hard locks and likely never will because he doesnt get enough skill points to allocate like i do since his intelligence is shit.
i just hit level 30 and used the nearly perfect perk to raise all of my S.P.E.C.I.A.L stats to at least 9, so my character is about as strong as you can get. plus i have barter, energy weapons, lockpick, medicine, repair, science, small guns, and speech maxed out. in my opinion i spread my points around better than he did since he probably won't ever have a character as strong as mine, but he also doesn't have too many problems, just a few more inconveniences than me.
Quote : | "Most important are small guns, lockpick OR science, and either repair if you fight a lot or speech if you talk a lot." |
seconding this, but i think repair is more valuable than speech. if i had to start over i definitely woulda put more skill points on small guns rather than energy weapons so early. that was dumb on my part.10/29/2009 11:04:16 PM |

Science and Repair are definitely at the top of the list. Also, lockpick is important as having it maxed out will get you into just about anywhere. After that, it really depends on preferences. I've always had plenty of stimpacks or caps to repair health, so medicine wasn't as important for me. I like to sneak attack a lot so I maxed out Sneak as well. In terms of weapons, I really like the energy weapons so I maxed that out as well. I rarely used big guns, but once again that goes to personal preference.
For PERKS, I'd actually recommend getting the Child at Heart. I chose this one the second time I played through the game and was surprised at the options you get in conversations with just about every child you run into. Many times they will give you ammo, weapons, or tips that you would not be able to discover without the perk. This is true for the DLCs as well. 10/29/2009 11:23:42 PM |

Yeah my Repair and Science skills are lacking...also when I started my character, I had 5 points on each S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute, trying to be balanced...it works ok I guess but I'd rather have focused on being one type of character...I think Speech is my highest, its around 66 points or so...gonna tear this game up tonight after the Bobcats game 10/30/2009 6:10:27 PM |

I'm getting closed to half way to the max.

Yeah in my current playthrough where I'm trying to be evil, I blew up Megaton...I forgot to get the strength bobblehead from the sheriff's house though...does that sheriff remind anybody else of Carl Weathers' character in Happy Gilmore? Dude who had his hand bitten off by the alligator?
But yeah on my other playthrough I'm being good/neutral so I disarmed the bomb.
I'm doing similar to what you're doing though as far as just exploring, finding new map locations, getting experience and leveling up, etc, without doing all the main quests...I went to Rivet City and talked about my dad but I'm about halfway through level 11 and still have most of the main quests to do

^ I did the same thing my first play through; I did one game where I was evil and blew up Megaton and saved another game where I was good. Also, with dogmeat, if you get the DLC there's a perk called "puppies" where every time dogmeat dies a new one appears outside Vault 101. Don't know if it's worth wasting a perk on but at least you won't have to keep reloading. 11/6/2009 4:37:15 PM |

Here's a tip for making caps / maximizing caps from buying/selling:
When you go into Tenpenny Tower, go into the shop on the right side of the ground floor that has a robot "bartender"
Hack his computer on his desk (just duck down behind the desk and you'll remain hidden). One of the options on the computer is to set the prices to "50% VIP discount". My barter skill is at like 30, but I was getting roughtly 90% of the value of items I would sell. 11/6/2009 7:07:56 PM |

One Perk that is not to be underestimated is the Comprehension Perk (gives 2 points to skills per book read instead of one) because with both of my characters I have read over 80 books and counting, and that would really be 160 skill points which is a very lot for for the skills they count toward. I am going to get it on my next character. 1/5/2010 5:19:43 PM |

Even after playing Fallout 2 through several times I still manage to run into Special Encounters that are exceptionally rare. The first picture is some weird crash site, the second pictures is of exploding brahmins that deal VERY HIGH damage to you. Also, after you finish the game, if you go the church in the New Reno, thats in Commercial Row, the preacher will give you a Fallout 2 Hintbook and the first time you read it it ups ALL of your skills to 300% and gives you 10k xp, and every time you read thereafter you get 10k xp and you can completely max out your character in a matter of minutes, albeit the game is finish but you can have come fun using skills that you always wanted to use so you can see what they really do. FYI, I ran into these encounters during the game before I finished it and got the hintbook, as I had 100% Outdoorsman, and Ranger perk.

I bought this on a Steam deal a few months back and my shitty old PC would chug when I tried to play. Now with the i7, it runs smooth as glass. Since I just beat Borderlands, I am now catching up on Fallout 3. I saved in Megaton city and did the nuke Megaton side story, just to see what happened. I pretty much want to play a good character the first time through, but then I think I am going to go all in with an evil character playthrough.
