Damn, I think the Okkervil River record is already my 3rd favorite of the year behind the Fleet Foxes EP and LP.

Also, I swear I've listened to the Black Kids' "underestimated my charm" at least 10 times today.

^ no problem

sensi and Everclear, check your PM's for the Okkervil River and Black Kids.

Links for the Black Kids are flying off the intertwebs like crazy, so I figured I would just send it that way. Not my links, but they were both working when I sent them.

Their live show is fun, at least from an energy standpoint.

I have no desire to listen to any of their records.

I honestly have no opinion on the Avett Brothers. I have seen them live, and it was okay, and I think they have some good songs, but nothing that really grabs me and makes me want to listen to more of their albums.

On a completely different subject, "Starry Stairs" off the Okkervil River album is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

"2008 NEW ALBUM

Happy New Year to you all! Hope that 2008 is great one for ya!

As far as The Anniversary is concerned, 2008 will be a doozie.

We are releasing a NEW ALBUM this year that will include our un-released songs.

We are also releasing a DVD featuring "live" performances and behind-the-scenes of us just hanging out.

If you guys could help out and send any photos that you might have including who took the picture to theanniversary@hotmail.com

We are gathering up as many as we can for the insert of the DVD and the CD artwork.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Forward this on to your friends. And let's get the word out!

Perhaps a re-union show, too? Who knows.

Peace out, Janko""

i'll never forget seeing them at Kings in 2003 (i think). also saw broken social scene there which was incredible.

i think that he is referring to this:
Quote :
"The Anniversary Compile B-Sides and Rarities
Whoa, who saw this coming? Vagrant-signed emotive synth-poppers reborn as classic rock-worshipping emotive hippie kids the Anniversary threw in the towel back in 2004. And yes, in case the mention of Vagrant and the multiple instances of the word "emotive" didn't tip you off, they were emo. Deal with it. Anyway, here we are in 2008 and the Anniversary have a "new" Vagrant release due tomorrow, June 24!

Devil on Our Side: B-Sides & Rarities collects two discs worth of Anniversary tracks that fall into the titular categories. A number of them are unsung high points of the emo genre culled from early splits and singles-- including an awesome Sub Pop 7"-- while quite a few have never graced the ears of non-Anniversary-associated human beings before. An Anniversary MySpace blog post from New Year's Day even brings up the possibility of a "re-union show," so consider our breath bated.

In the meantime, the spirit of the Anniversary lives on-- to varying degrees of potency-- in such current projects as the Only Children, Art in Manila, White Flight, Saints & Sinners, and Dri.

Devil on Our Side: B-Sides & Rarities:

Disc 1:

01 Fletcher Durbin
02 Alright for Now
03 Alone in Debtford
04 Those Eyes
05 Hold Me Tonight
06 Lowtide and Hospital Bed
07 The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
08 I Haven't Slept
09 Diamonds and Daisies
10 Kids in Carolina
11 100 Ships
12 Till We Earned a Holiday

Disc 2:

01 Vasil & Bluey
02 To Never Die Young
03 What's My Name? My Name Is...What?! What?!
04 I Believe That the End of the Reign of Terror Is Soon Near
05 O' Lady Butterfly
06 Che
07 Ain't That Bad
08 Kali
09 I Know What's Best
10 Lover
11 Let It Slip
12 Lodi
13 Strings Break
14 High School Talent Show"

as far as the Avett brothers go, while I was still in college and my friends from back home were still in Raleigh it was the only decent music I could get them to listen to, so they sort of became a backdrop to boozing. Probly wouldn't have gotten as into them if this weren't the case.

That Connor Oberst record is mediocre at best. I mean, there are about 3 "great" songs, but the rest were boring.

I'll give it another listen.

The Okkervil River is spectacular, though.

that's it, that's the whole review.

considering p4k were the first ones to hype up the black kids, you'd think they at least deserve an actual review to qualify the 3.3 score.

Well, this is why folks are starting to almost laugh at Pitchfork. They were the ones who built up The Black Kids and hyped the ever living shit out of them after they played the Pitchfork Festival last year, then they don't have the courtesy to even review their full length debut. Snarky, I understand, but this isn't even funny. (at least the Jet review w/ the youtube clip was hilarious... and deserving, but I digress).

The writers of Pitchfork came back and blew them up after their Festival --- The Black Kids released the 4 track Wizard of Ahhhhs EP (which, btw, was originally an 8 track sold at their early shows.. all 8 of those songs are on their new record, including all 4 tracks on the formally released Wizard of Ahhhhs EP that Pitchfork hyped the shit out of).

So, now is when I question: Was Pitchfork just fucking around and seeing if they could hype the shit out of a band only to pull the rug out from under them, playing God with an indie band and testing their increasing commercial power OR was the writer pissed off, as I was, that the Black Kids took a year to release a 10 song record, 4 of which were on a released EP? (8 of them, if you count folks like me who had the 8 track early release they did)

Unfortunately, we'll never know because the lazy fucks failed to even write a review for it. I would like to assume that it was because they basically just re-released the old tracks with new production and the writer found it uninspired, but... who knows.... we have a picture of 2 dogs. So, now I'll have to go to CokeMachineGlow for a real review.

I, personally, like the new record because I did my best to listen to it as if I had never heard the EP. I have several friends who's taste I appreciate who had also never heard the EP, and they love it.

I like Pitchfork, but I hate the direction they're taking, partly reflected in this review.

^ 4 of the 10 tracks were part of the same EP they praised as the second coming, so I would assume that substance isn't the issue.

Again, they didn't bother to write a review, so we'll never know whether it was because they essentially re-released better produced tracks or whether they deemed the record bad because of the other 6 songs.

Pitchfork is a joke and has been for a long time. They rarely ever spend time talking about the music itself, it's always some failed writer's unfunny/unclever rant/anecdote.
