Journalists don't choose that profession for the money. It generally doesn't pay very well. They do it because they enjoy writing and reporting. But newspapers aren't run by journalists anymore, they're run by capitalists who don't tend to really care about journalism. And when you are alienated from your labor -- having your message dictated by wealthy owners with a profit motive -- the quality of your work suffers and panders to the least common denominator. It wouldn't be "dipshit citizens" owning the means, it would be journalists who would then have the ability & drive to create better work.

In the short term, co-ops are not perfect but step in the right direction.
