"Question: When I do Romanian deadlifts, even light ones with dumbbells (25lbs), my hamstrings are shot the next day. They're usually coupled with squats or lunges, but pretty sure it's the deadlifts that make my hamstrings so tight. As in I can barely touch my toes. I stretch after I lift, but probably not as well as I should, because I never really learned how to stretch properly in relationship to what I've worked out. Is there a particular stretch I should be doing after those, or is it normal to just have super tight muscles the day after?"

could potentially be glutes too that are tight...I'll show you some easy stretches with a jump rope that will help

As far as stretching in relationship to exercise...

I would stretch after every workout session...anything that is extremely tight should be worked on daily (if it's a non-workout day I would recommend foam rolling first)

I did a 60 min aquatic class today. I'm finding I REALLY enjoy lifting weights. I want to go lift some right now but time constraints won't allow for that.

Alright, I've glanced over this thread and while late to the party, think I could get some positives from signing up!

I'm quite content with my weight so for the time being I'm just focusing on increasing muscle strength, mass and definition. I'll also start tracking my diet though I don't plan on changing it at all (unless I'm not taking in enough calories to achieve my goals). Since last August I've been gyming it roughly 3 times a week (on average) for 45-90 minute exercises. I've been focusing more on strength training since around October.

I'm bored at work today so I'll be setting up a FitDay account. I'll post baseline pics when I'm home later after work.

Ok, diet change for me.

I've cut out unnecessary beers (the kind where you're just sitting around doing nothing and having a beer or two), soda, potato chips/popcorn/cheetos/etc and fast food... Not lowering caloric intake but rather in the place of the body killers I'm preparing more whole foods and snacking on green beans/grapes/oranges/bananas/etc as well as some dry roasted, unsalted peanuts (to get good fats).

I'm not planning on giving up the one day a week pizza, moderate amount of alcohol on the weekends and steak dinners I tend to enjoy on a weekend but I think with the amount of unhealthy foods I'm planning on giving up I might see a huge difference.

Given the fact that it's really not A LOT of stomach pudge I want to get rid I'm hoping that changes like that help do the trick and I won't be forced to give up the pizza and alcohol if I'm really dead set on seeing the changes I want to.

Also, as far as really working out the chest well should I be doing flat, incline and decline every chest day? Or rotate flat/incline one day and flat/decline the next?

(and just to be clear, I'm not ignoring the other parts of my body -- I just am not seeing the gains in the chest I'd like comparatively speaking -- my days are chest/triceps, back/traps, shoulders/biceps, legs with ab work sprinkled in two or three days a week as well)

Ain't nothing wrong with that, buddy. And yes, you can do incline, decline, and flat every chest day. Can't imagine that'd be a problem.

My main suggestion would be to consider splitting your chest/tricep day up. Triceps are so important bench, that by the time you get to them on their own, they're probably already gassed. My bench also increased when I split them as increasing my tricep strength helped.

My old splits used to be Bi/Tris, Shoulders, Chest/Back, for this reason. If what you're doing now isn't working for you, you might want to give it a shot.

just got home from another grocery shop. for those of you keeping score at home, i spent $60 this time instead of $70 since i had more of what i needed that would last longer than 10 days.

today is day 10 of following the insanity meal plan and i feel great. im getting used to eating more frequent smaller meals and i'm finding that is not that hard to incorporate the food into my lifestyle. sometimes its hard but its working.

wadhead mentioned picking out restaurant meals in advance and i echo this 100%. 90% of the time i have a heads up on a restaurant and i can hop online and look at their nutrition info. i can make a better decision, add it to my food log & see what i need to do for the rest of the day to keep on track. im not being a food nazi but im also regulating more closely what im doing.

today im having a total fat day. i feel gross and flabby but i killed my insanity workout yesterday & for the most part today. im hitting spin class tonight & need to do some running this week too in prep for my tri in 11 days. trying not to let the fat day psych me out and just keep looking at the bigger picture

oh and i 100% avoided the mac & cheese at sweet tomatoes at lunch today. instead i had some soup & a cherry nut bread thing that ended up being less calories combined & more filling.

^sweet tomatoes is awesome!

been living off mainly eggs and beans for 3 weeks now. My food budget is ~$20/week. Still not sick of them, food is more or less having a direct relationship to my energy levels now and I find taking an appreciation for food as sustenance, instead of just yummy stuff for my tummy, really helps me stay focused on my diet plan and suppresses my urge to cheat...scale weight moving in the right direction helps too. Body still feels fat though. I think if I begin to eat more, my muscles will feel and look a bit harder. I just still can't commit to more than 2000/day.

Had a pretty good day today.
Chest and biceps at the gym. Then, a 6.5 mile run at about 8:00/mile pace. And just finished up a couple steaks, eggs, and rice.

I'm not counting my calories... I just cut out beer and going out for lunches. I eat like crap on the weekends (i.e. how I ate before the challenge)

That's definitely a net reduction in calories so I should lose weight.

Asian Sesame Chicken and Cashew Salad

2(4-block servings)

3 tbsp soy sauce
1 1/3 tsp toasted sesame oil
8 oz cooked boneless chicken breast
1 1/2 c fresh bean sprouts
2 whole red peppers, julienned
2/3 c canned, sliced water chestnuts
2 c string beans (I used the flower/head of asparagus instead)
1 c cooked barley
Salt and Pepper to taste
4 cups of shredded romaine lettuce
8 toasted cashews, chopped
3 scallions (green onions), chopped fine

In a large bowl, add the soy sauce and sesame oil and blend well. Toss in chicken, bean sprouts, peppers, water chestnuts, string beans, and barley. Season with a little salt and pepper. Divide the lettuce between 2 plates and top with salad. Garnish with cashews and scallions.

This was soooooo yummy. I did not know all these flavors would go together so well. I LOVE BARLEY!!!

Good for you man, I hope that hammy heals up soon. Nothing more frustrating than your body letting you down when you're all in your inspired fitness mood. It sucks. I've got a bum shoulder ATM so I'm working around it...definitely an annoyance.
