"you don't know why our secondary is bad? do you even watch the fucking game? they play 10 fucking yards off the receivers, THAT'S WHY THEY ARE SO FUCKING BAD. so, really, it's not that the secondary sux, it's the defensive playcalling that sux"

Quote :
"you don't have to do man to man to do decent defense, though. but giving every player a 10-yard cushion doesn't normally work out too well, as we are seeing."

it has nothing to do with that. Other team's WR separate from our DB's way to easily. It would be way worse if we were in some type of man/bump-run defense. We simply aren't athletic enough in the secondary.

So right now they are trying to cover that up by blitzing like crazy to put pressure on, because they know a QB with 3+ seconds is going to find an open player. The cushion thing MIGHT be true if we were getting killed on quick slants, or bubble screens. We aren't. We get killed on 15 yard timing patterns where we are 5 yards off the guy when he breaks. We get killed on deep passes up the seams. We get killed when our pressure works, but the QB buys times and finds wide open players coming back to the ball.

Wake did a pretty good job all day picking up the blitz, and our defense is basically blitz and get loss plays, and hope for turnovers. Neither really happened today and we got torched.

The problem with this defense is it is a "gunslinger" type approach. When it works, we can knock off some good teams and it is really fun to watch. When a team protects the football and picks up the blitz we get picked apart by redshirt soph QBs throwing for 300 yards.

With that said, time to que up the NC State Motto! "JUST WAIT TILL BASKETBALL SEASON!"

(Unless it is basketball season, then it is "JUST WAIT TILL FOOTBALL SEASON!")

Bryan did drop a lot of key passes, but he wasn't the only one to drop passes. There was one hell of a vertical pass by Glennon, and a Return for TD (that was called back) by TJ, both showed potential. Our biggest problems continue to be discipline on defense and blown coverages (This was a problem even when we had Nate -> hence Archer). Imagine if we could protect Glennon decently, and used a play-action passing game with screens for our running game. We would look good. The running game has improved, and we really have a good kicking team, and special teams.

I remember one from... I think it was the season before last when our defense was as bad as a defense can be. He said something to the tune of sometimes you have to blame the arrows in your quiver, referring to terrible players. The reason I remember is because the quote had such an easy quip... doesn't matter how bad the arrows are if the Archer sucks.

Edit: Found the quote in defense of Archer.

Quote :
"“Mike’s been part of this before,” O’Brien said on Thursday. “He built a heck of a defense at Kentucky before he came here, a place where they had a long tradition of not going to bowl games, and winning. He came to us as one of the top defensive coordinators in the country at turning the football over.”You know, sometimes it’s not the coach, sometimes it’s the arrows in his quiver that need to improve."

No, read what I wrote. The cushion is helping, which is what is so bad about it. If they were up on the line they'd be getting worked even more. Our DB's are with other team's WR's until they make their break. At that point they have no ability to close, or stay with them.

Stop talking like you know anything about football if you honestly think having our DB's playing up on their man would help. Again, maybe true if we are getting killed on quick slants, bubble screens, 7 yard outs, we aren't. We get killed 20 yards up the seam, or on 15 yard outs. That has nothing to do with a 10 yard cushion.

LOLogic = you have no true response to that b/c its the reality. The players could be all 5 star recruits but if they shit the bed every game - who do you think is gonna get fired? who is ultimately responsible for the team on the field?

You have to be trolling at this point.

Yes you are right, we should be playing bump and run man coverage with our DB's that can't keep up with players coming out of their break. You are right.

D-backs gave way too much space for the WRs. why didn't we run a zone more often? it would have cut down on the underneath gains because LBs would have had the coverage in place.

I had something typed out. But I'm done discussing why a 10 yard cushion when you are getting beat 10+ yards down the field isn't really the issue.

Bottom line is our DB's are very bad, the scheme isn't helping, we aren't as athletic as the WR's they are playing against, and we are going to give up a lot of yards and points this year.

aaronburro is a joke, just ignore him.

e: That said, I don't think the secondary is as dire as you seem to. A lot of big WF plays (outside of hitting crossing patterns) were all plays where we got pressure on the QB, he evaded easily, and then picked us apart. The secondary is always going to be fucked in those situations.

I'd rather get a coordinator from the Big 12 or SEC than anyone from the ACC or big east.

The ACC sucks because the coaches don't have big program experience.

We just had the 2nd best season we have had in 20+ years and after 2 games people are already turning on the coach.

Hey skokiaan, do you still think Glennon sucks?

What's more impressive is the game he had even with the drops we had. (Bryan )

Our freshmen kickers are as good or better than advertised and Glennon, Graham, and Palmer had solid games. Play calling is still bad and Archer sucks as always.

[Edited on September 10, 2011 at 9:53 PM. Reason : hopefully things get better with Moose, Sweezy, Rieskamp and Glennon getting better]

FYI, I've never said Glennon sucks. That's your pathetic attempt to salvage something from all the crow you have to eat today. I have in fact defended Glennon on here. It's not his fault TOB sucks.

Ok I was wrong, we lost to Wake. But your golden boy Russell Wilson lost twice their as well. You have been blaming the whole season on RW leaving.

Still not THAT PISSED we lost today.....we have 2 kickers that have dramatically improved our ST unit already. Palmer is a playmaker at WR. Glennon threw for 300+ and 3 TDs in his ACC road first start. We didn't have Sweezy, Rieskamp, or Greene.

This thread is a travesty. You guys acted like the game was over when we were down by 7 and we only lost by 7. Everyone knew this game was going to be close and it was. One way or another is was going to be a close game. Our defense fucked up and I don't even blame it on athleticism.

The main thing I cannot stand about watching us play Wake is seeing them get away with those fucking trick reverse plays every GODDAMN YEAR. You know they are coming and we never stop them. That was the difference in the game. I don't know if the coaches just forget or the DBs are just that fucking stupid (probably).

However, I think this team will improve on what I saw today and we have a dog shit schedule so this season should not be that horrible. Maybe next year we get 9 wins again.
