I don't want my half-sisters having my address or my phone number. A few weeks ago, my mother asks me for my new address. Two weeks later, a letter from my half-sister (who I've avoided for over a decade) soliciting money from me (the poor grad student), for my nephew graduating high school. This morning, she calls me at 8am to ask if my nephew can stay in my already overcrowded apartment. I haven't even seen my nephew in a decade and I'm not much of a family person.

Is it OK to ask a family member to stop asking for favors?

You can be upfront with your family without being rude. That's really how I handle things. You don't have to walk on eggshells around people, but there's no reason to burn bridges either. I would just say "No, he can't stay here. I get the impression you are trying to take advantage of me, and I ask that it stop from now on."

Yea, this half-sister (old enough to be my mother...my parents are old) has been using my parents in this sort of way for as long as we've lived near her (starting around 1992). She and her ex decided to try to have a kid to save their marriage. Three times. Then he left her...with the kids. I guess, now that her half-siblings are getting old enough, she feels that she can start soliciting money and goods from them as well.

Well, I didn't send money, and I told her I live in an apartment with 3 other people, 2 of which are a pregnant couple.

If nothing else, he should be using the money from graduation to pay for a hotel room. I know it's not the way he'd prefer to spend it...but you can't just go asking family that hasn't spoken to you in years.

I managed to get sunburned today wearing spf 100, sitting under an umbrella, and wearing a hat and ginormous sunglasses.

If it is hfm, elkbaby, MOST adults dont get it. I shared a drink with my niece the day before she came down with the rash.
