Yes, Baker was out most of the year last year with an injury. Brown was hurt in the beginning and came back at the end, so he will definitely be gone after next year.

Brown will be a Sr., Baker a RS Jr., Eugene a RS Jr., Underwood a So.

Is Barnes really projected as a safety? I think he would be more effective at CB. I've never heard anything about his hitting abilities.

I really think that Barnes is going to end up playing on offense.

We're loading up on secondary help, and redshirting Barnes and seeing where he fits as far as a back, slot receiver, etc. might be a good idea as we look towards the future as we lose Brown, Baker, and Eugene over the next year or two.

He certainly has the talent to play safety, but it looks like the staff is going to give him a legit chance on O first.

So, are there going to be any surprises Wednesday? I'm still hoping for Mackey. How many offers do we have left on the table?

Assuming no dismissals and all commited players sign and qualify there is 3 scholarships left to reach the limit of 85. There is a lot of chatter about some secret visitors this weekend. Might be some surprises between now and wednesday.

haha....secret visitors huh? Where's the Wolfweb Investigating Team when you need 'em?

If they're being kept secret, they must be pretty good though. Here's to a good and surprising Wednesday.

I've never seen Barnes play live, but i have watched his videos. Don't really know what to think as far as position goes. At RB, he runs hard, and he runs fast. He doesn't try to fake you with moves, just finds the hole and goes, and seems to have great balance ... one of those "always falls forward guys." Downside...he appears to be pretty heavy-footed, and doesn't look like he has that "stop on a dime" quality that the best ones do.

At safety, he looks like a stud. Tackling technique needs to work, but he seems to have a good feel for the position (based on the limited video I've seen).

Tobias Palmer looks like he could be a great RB too. Super quick/fast, and has some cutback ability. It's going to be really interesting to see how the staff uses these two guys.

Barnes lays some nasty hits at safety in his videos. He does run heavy footed but he's still fast and has great vision at RB. I think his running is more technique than anything. He needs to get his knees higher it looks like.

Just went back and watched a few more videos on rivals.

I've gotta say -- CJ Wilson looks like he could be bigtime. He's not getting much hype because he hasn't be evaluated by recruiting sites ... but the guy looks awesome. Seems to have a great set of hands too. I don't know where we're planning on playing him, but he's going to be special IMO.

got a commitment today from Marty Everett. Probably a sign and place since he might not qualify

http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/a.z?s=178&p=8&c=1&nid=2865811

He is also prolly our last commitment for this class

Oh no another FL commit. TOB is ignoring the state of NC! We won't beat UNC, but beat FSU b/c we have too many FL kids on the roster. How long until we see a N&O story on TOB & Co. not effectively recruiting the state? Butch Davis doesn't need to be criticized for not effectively recruiting the state, b/c he recruits nationally.

Sucks we'll probably miss on Mackey, but DE wasn't our biggest need coming into the off-season so we can just save the scholly and hopefully get a stout one or two next season.

I'm ready for signing day and hopefully all these guys will hold to their commitments, would hate to lose any of them.

Yeah I think we're out of it, I think UNC is ahead of us now with him. Kinda stinks but I'm not too upset, our coaches have put together a great class and I'm ready to see them in action.

^if you're talkin about mackey, no, unc is not ahead of us with him. Its us or VT, and alot of ppl are saying VT. However, pretty much everyone was conceding Mattes to Clemson with Mattes never saying anything......the same way Mackey hasn't said anything

i don't think they would have turned Devin Taylor down unless they felt they had Mackey in the bag. Plus when VT insiders have felt good about someone this year then they have gotten them

I'm hoping for Mackey but if all our commitments sign it will be a BEAUTIFUL day

Since the start of 08' I thought we would whiff on the rest of our big time prospects and we ended up landing two of them in Mattes and Lucas.

We also added some unknown guys in Shea McKeen (possible starter next year), Clem Johnson (who's stock has blown up and can play a lot next year), CJ Wilson (a sleeper), Locust (prolly a redshirt and have 2 more years to play) and Marty Everett (a sign and place prospect)

I thought we already had a great class before these 7 but now we have an OUTSTANDING class. And here's hoping that Mackey makes it 8.

Duke already has a QB committed. He's actually supposed to be very good and is one of the top QBs in this class.

I found it. Sean Renfree a 4* QB rated the #10 QB in this class according to Scout. he was previously committed to GT before the coaching change.

Dwayne Allen supposed to announce today at 1 I believe. Looking like its going to be Clemson, but the way he has flip-flopped, he will probably turn around and sign with someone else on signing day

^^haha I don't think Duke would turn away Pryor if he wanted to sign. He's also a top 50 bball recruit.

He's also the only top 100 recruit with interest in State bball

Quote :
"With signing day just two days away, coach Tom O’Brien and staff are looking to round out a class that already includes 24 commitments. N.C. State recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie said it was critical that State address some depth at certain positions with the staff’s first true class.

“It’s very important to fill our needs,” Petercuskie said. “We have 85 scholarships, and people think that’s a lot. But that’s a lot less than it used to be back in the old days. Coach O’Brien does a great job in relation to filling our needs. He’ll look two to three years down the road to the number of players at each position and the number of players we need to recruit at each position.”

O’Brien wasted no time with addressing one of State’s biggest needs — the offensive line. Already, N.C. State has received commitments from five offensive linemen, including R.J. Mattes out of Concord Robinson. Mattes, listed at 6 feet 6 and 260 pounds, is considered to be the No. 11 offensive tackle prospect in the nation according to Scout.com

Of the 24 players that have committed to N.C. State, 10 are from the state of North Carolina. Petercuskie said recruiting North Carolina is one of O’Brien’s top priorities.

“Coach O’Brien has made it very clear that he wants to recruit the state of North Carolina first and foremost, end of story,” Petercuskie said. “That’s what we’ve done, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job with that.”

Linebacker Terrell Manning (Laurinburg), running back Brandon Barnes (Bunn) and Offensive Tackle R.J. Mattes (Concord) are considered among the nation’s best prospects for their respective positions.

T.J. Graham, a wide receiver from Wakefield High School, is another local commitment for the Wolfpack. Graham said he had been an N.C. State fan since he was 8 years old, but he rethought his allegiance when Chuck Amato left. However, a meeting with offensive coordinator Dana Bible changed his mind.

“He kind of told me what the plan was,” Graham said. “It was the best thing I’ve ever heard. They are going to win national championships at N.C. State, so why would I miss out on this.”

Maybe the biggest headliner of the class is Mike Glennon of Chantilly, Va. Glennon, the No. 5 quarterback in the class of 2008 according to Scout.com, committed to N.C. State last summer over offers from Florida State, Miami and Michigan among others.

Graham participated in drills with Glennon at Senior Day in Carter-Finley Stadium, and he said he was impressed with Glennon’s ability.

“I was kind of amazed that he could throw the way he did as a high school quarterback,” Graham said. “As a college quarterback, he’s going to be better than Matt Ryan. When his day comes, he’s going to be really good.”

When Graham met Glennon, the N.C. State coaching staff was still recruiting several other quarterbacks in the class of 2008. He said there was no question, however, as to who was the No. 1 guy.

“[Mike Glennon] is there beside Jacob Charest [committed to Illinois] and a lot of other great high school quarterbacks,” Graham said. “By watching Mike amongst them, it made me wonder if those guys were good at all. That’s how good Mike was playing that day, let’s leave it at that.”

National signing day is Wednesday. With only a handful of scholarships left, O’Brien will look to improve on an already solid class with signing day decisions from Defensive End Leon Mackey of Hargrave Military Academy and several others.

Whatever happens, Graham is sure he knows what this class is destined for.

“I think our class is the best class in the ACC, hands down,” Graham said. “We don’t have to have five-star guys. We can get a good class across the board. It’s shaping up to be really good. As soon as we start getting playing time and getting experience, we’ll be on our way.”
