Also my mom is a photographer and doesn't do change very well but is running XP on her desktop and vista on her laptop and the differences confuse her too much. She wants to upgrade both to Win7 but her biggest concern is sticking with her known way of organizing files. I set both computers up on her network and showed her how to share files but this isn't satisfactory. She really wants a complete replica of certain folders on both computers. Like all sub-directories under one folder to be replicated every time she plugs her laptop into the network. She manages so many files each day that transferring them manually isn't working very well.

What's the best backup software that would be able to do this? She also doesn't like seeing things she didn't put there on the C drive (aka program files etc). I'm going to try to set up windows 7 so everything she uses is under the documents folder. She's used to just making her own folders on each respective drive. (I got her to buy a MBP before her current Dell and she hated it and ended up selling it, i know, that's a first).

Any ideas on some software that might do this?

sounds like your mom needs an external hard drive she can swap between laptop and desktop. Then back it up to something else for safety, not for working on files.

Or you need sync software, not backup software.

Sync software I guess. She's not really stubborn she just has such a workload she doesn't have time to learn too many new things. She has a few externals that idea might work. Any ideas on the best sync software? I found a bunch online, both freeware and paid. Didn't know if anyone already used it.

-oh and just to clear things up, the $29 student special is an upgrade only? So you have to have a legit copy of XP/Vista to install it? It won't install on a clean disk?

I'm thinking about getting w7 64 bit... if I want to do a dual boot, can I do a 32 bit version of xp/vista and also 64 bit w7?

All she needs is a Briefcase on each computer. Make sure homegroup is setup and turned on, and that she uses the same account on both computers. That should ensure everything is network accessible.

On her desktop machine, right click in any folder and choose New->Briefcase.

She can drag and drop all the folders/files she wants to keep synced into the briefcase.

Then, copy and paste the briefcase to the laptop over the network.

From then on, to sync all the files, right click on the briefcase and choose Update All.

This has been around since XP, but almost no one uses it, or even knows about it.

I'm thinking that the upgrade & full-version of W7 are one in the same. The only difference is that during installation you choose custom install instead of upgrade. I've been looking at the M$ site and all it says is to use custom install from you download/disc.

dropbox lan support would be awesome. Especially if you could specify folders that aren't uploaded to their server so you don't have a cap.

^^^I agree. Briefcase is the "no downloads, it just works" easy way to do it.

SyncToy is much more flexible and powerful, but it also requires you to understand, care about, and deal with folder mappings. You can get the latest version of SyncToy here

Briefcase is definitely the old school. The main advantage is there's nothing to install, and you don't NEED a network to make it work. You can put the briefcase on a removeable drive and take it with you just like a folder.

.NET has some pretty good file/folder monitoring APIs, but I only played around with them a few years ago. It might not be that hard to write a tool to monitor directories listed in a text file and sync them with the other machine. In a one user scenario you really don't have to worry about the case where a file has been updated on both machines at the same time, so you can just push updated files to the other machine.

i understand briefcase is easier, but i think that the fact that one can schedule synctoy in task scheduler, far outweighs the one-time install & setup requirement. unless i just don't know how to automate briefcase.

Finally got the student upgrade to do a full install on my mac pro.. took nearly 6 hours all together.. but definitly worth it in the end.. im using bootcamp if any1 is wondering.. i downloaded the student upgrade files on a friends computer and converted it using elevated comand prompts into an .iso file. and used it as the $200 version u can buy in stores.. flawless.. just saved myself $170

^^It all depends on the usage. I actually got rid of synctoy a while ago because scheduled syncs ended up fucking things up for me several times. SyncToy can wreak havoc when you are dealing with corporate networks and online/offline scenarios.

Probably not something neodata would ever run into or most anyone else, but it's made me weary.

so when does SP1 come out? I've heard Win7 is more stable at launch than some previous versions, but I am wary to upgrade to any new OS on a primary machine for at least a few months...is that precaution as warranted with Win7?

Also in general terms, how do the overall look, feel and use compare to XP or Vista?

^No need to worry about waiting for SP1 with Windows 7. It has already been through very extensive user testing and feedback and is quite actually the most stable operating system that Microsoft has ever created.

I read the step-by-steps and it said you do, but none of the steps indicated you need it. I have a legit windows XP, I bought my computer at one of the IBM warehouse sales. It came with no windows disc.... so how would I know my product key?

also, can you go from XP Home to 7 Professional? (since you can get 7 Pro for the same price as 7 Home from the student deal)

^^call M$ store, press 7, wait forever, tell them you want a full copy of W7 (plus which version + 32/64-bit) through the student discount, provide e-mail address, confirm that you are using the student discount, pay over phone, wait for order to be processed, download OS, profit. you can also order a disc for $15.

i'm having trouble getting my sharing setup how i want. i only want to share 4 directories in my documents but when i select to share those directories it ends up sharing everything. they've probably made it easier than vista, but i knew exactly how to do what i wanted before.
nevermind, the advanced sharing options are the same

having trouble mapping my optical drives on the desktop to the laptop though, not sure why
