Can you not put the same widgets on the motorola droid as you can the HTC phones running android? 4/27/2010 4:22:32 PM |
CalliPHISH All American 10883 Posts user info edit post |
^ the widgets come from the apps... the apps are in the market... the market is available on both the motorola droid and the HTC Incredible so both phones have access to the same apps. There may be some apps that come on HTC Sense UI, that would not be on the Droid... of course, if there were it would not take much effort to find the .apk file and install it using a file manager like Astro (in the market also). 4/27/2010 4:43:51 PM |
pttyndal WINGS!!!!! 35217 Posts user info edit post |
The HTC exclusive apps like the clock/weather widget, friendsteam, etc are so entangled in the HTC framework that it isn't as simple as just pulling the file and putting it on the droid. That's why you see knockoffs like Beautiful Widgets instead of the ported app.

pros: instant close of any open app service running in background, freeing up MB's of memory to help speed things up, by killing apps before locking your phone in theory it can help save your battery life by not having apps constantly update over the airwaves when you aren't using your phone.
cons: will close any home screen addon you use -- like SlideScreen, aHome or OpenHome, will close all running services in background, can slow any apps that use background services to update their information, can close power managers, etc. that need to run all the time to monitor your settings, etc. you get the point.
i've found it MORE effective to manage the apps manually by changing their "background service" settings by making sure they don't run all the time, or so they don't startup upon power-on, a lot of apps like weather, google talk, slidescreen, news & weather, all these run in the background to update their information so it's readily available as soon as you click on the widget or app. you're better off just running a tight ship and making sure the apps don't manage themselves.

Quote : | "HTC to pay royalties to Microsoft after being told Android steps on its patents Posted on Wednesday, Apr 28, 2010 by Phil Nickinson
Microsoft issued a news release late late night, announcing it signed a patent agreement with HTC over its entire line of smartphones running the Android operating system.
Specific terms of the deal, including how many patents or what they cover, were not immediately released. Microsoft's statement did say the agreement "provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for HTC 's mobile phones running the Android mobile platform."
“HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial collaboration, and today’s agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercial arrangements that address intellectual property,” Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft, said in the official statement. “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with HTC.”
The announcement comes as HTC is facing a lawsuit from Apple Inc., which alleges that HTC infringes on a number of its patents with many of its Android phones, and a few Windows Mobile devices, too. It is unknown for which patents HTC is paying royalties to Microsoft, and whether they overlap any of Apple's claims.
CNET's Ina Fried reports that the disputed patents range from the user interface to the operating system itself, and that this is the first time Microsoft has publicly said that HTC was violating patents. Microsoft for years has alleged that Linux infringes on a number of its patents and has sought licensing deals with manufacturers who use the open-source OS, which also is the framework for Android. This, however, is Microsoft's first licensing deal with the mobile OS." |

The "conspiracy theorist" in me suspects that this may be an awesome partnership move with Microsoft and HTC in order to provide some protection to HTC from Apple, and a chance for Microsoft to stick the middle finger up at Apple.
I am wondering how it works legally if Microsoft and HTC found a way for the tech in question in Apple's lawsuits could be covered under an interpretation of Microsoft's patents. Would that protect HTC from being sued by Apple over the same tech that is now "Licensed" from Microsoft?4/28/2010 9:29:14 AM |

Ha, went to the store to get some screen protectors and asked if they had a demo of the incredible available. He said yeah but not one for me to touch but then brought it out when he was ringing me up. lol. Have to say it's a pretty sweet phone. I compared my Droid running SenseUI at 1GHz and the Incredible side-by-side and they were about the same speed-wise when switching screens and opening apps. The Droid did have the occasional lag while the Incredible never stuttered. The software for the camera is way better on the Incredible and pictures come out a lot faster. It's light but feels good in the hand, not sure why there are so many reports of it feeling cheap. If I didn't have a Droid already, the Incredible would definitely be a must have.
And apparently the one in Fuquay is getting 45 but the guy was like "you might want to schedule and appointment if you want one". yeah, sure thing.

On process management applications for Droid OS phones (words):
Synopsis: Process management apps are a waste of time
The way the android operating system works, services and apps "running" in the background can be taking up a small amount of memory but little to no processing time or other resources (read "battery life," etc). The way the OS works is that it just frees up memory as it needs it, so activities can sit in the background and do nothing, be freed whenever the phone needs to do something else, and left dead or brought back to life as needed. What you end up doing with a process manager program is wasting your time dropping background processes that have to be reloaded if they need to be used (causing lag) and wasting battery life on a process manager that is constantly doing work to destroy apps and services that aren't really causing any harm. It's counterproductive to say the least.
If your phone needs extra memory to do something, it'll take it. The background stuff is not causing a big enough drain on your battery to be significant, unless you have some buggy ass apps or widgets. Don't waste your time with a process manager, it's not worth it. 4/28/2010 2:47:37 PM |

^ while I agree and typically point out to not use a task manager/killer, I will say there have been times when my memory is so low and the phone (albeit I have a G1, not like you fuckers with your spiffy phones, ha) comes to a stumble SOME times.
When I kill the apps... all good in the hood, speed is right back. So yeah, I agree... but on phones like the G1 killing the apps certainly has its time and place. 4/28/2010 3:05:10 PM |

Is the Mac vs Windows all over again.
The iPhone OS is superior, but is on a single carrier on a single model of phone vs the Android OS on multiple carriers with multiple hardware.
Apple needs to try and get on Verizon.
But, perhaps the next iPhone revision will be A+ as Jobs claimed. 4/28/2010 10:25:38 PM |

because it's faster, more consistent, more stable, has better APIs, properly handles .ics, better exchange support, MUCH better technical support available, remote wipe capabilities, and has apps that all conform to proper standards so they don't block the phone from sleeping or answering calls properly.
Basically it's far more mature. Mulitasking is a trivial thing to add. The iPhone OSes core is clearly superior though.
Android does a lot of nice things (particularly the way it handles widgets), but is still very beta-ish. And the apps are no where near as polished as iPhone apps. 4/28/2010 11:12:37 PM |

Other than "faster" it sounds like you just described a Blackberry. That is another device that can do something simple like run AIM and perform other functions at the same time.
All of those corporate functions you are describing are easily handled by third party apps such as touchdown for android.4/29/2010 12:05:42 AM |

all the 3rd party apps in the world don't fill in the lack of attention to detail that Apple is famous for that hasn't had time to filter into the Android yet. 4/29/2010 12:38:17 AM |

Because 99.5% of the market doesn't care. And the iPhone OS CAN do this. Apple chooses not to allow it today. Platform capability != end user functionality.
Android is in a similar boat. It CAN do about anything, but it doesn't do anything exceedingly well or consistently.4/29/2010 1:03:14 AM |

I read an article today that Roger (i think it was) that was the exclusive iPhone carrier in Canada lost its exclusivity and has seen a serious drop in new subscribers while their competitors are gaining some serious ground now. Although they're all GSM but I wonder how things would pan out here if Verizon did get it. Keep in mind both networks are total shit and even more so with the extreme demand of an iPhone.
Also, why didn't someone PM me that there was an iPhone debate in here? jk I'll keep out of this one.
