Whatever, as long as we beat UNC it's a successful season.
That being said, I would entertain the idea of hiring Bill Cowher.
Not that I don't love TOB (I really do), but something needs to happen. Really feel he and his team are excellent recruiters and motivators, but just fail hardcore at calling plays. 9/10/2011 10:57:47 PM |

it takes more than one game to have a successful season. beating those d-bags is cake icing.
and everyone would "entertain" the idea of cowher. the problem is that he wouldn't.

Defense folded quick and allowed some dumb TDs before the offense turned it around. My real question is what has happened to Manning? He used to be as explosive as Nate and Earl. Now he just looks like another body out there. 9/10/2011 11:21:23 PM |

I am also not THAT disappointed either. It was definitely irritating watching reverses and halfback passes allowed to work when normally our DE's play very solid at maintaining their positions and not over-pursuing.
I'm just a lot happier that although we were down, those kids never gave up, especially Glennon. He actually didn't try to force anything too much when we got down. Running game was really impressive all day.
What really seemed to change Glennon's outlook was the INT. It's almost like he needed it. And as much as i don't like to lose, I think its going to benefit us in the long run as well.
I also liked TOB's press conference. Never heard him or an NCSTATE coach that mad after a loss, that I recall. 9/10/2011 11:35:01 PM |

MG had a heckofa second real game: 314 yds, 7.7 ypa, 3 TD, 1 int (2nd half >> 1st). And the O-line looks like they might be getting their act together.
Bryan missed a couple of crucials, but he caught 3 for 40 yds and a td (and that crazy 1-handed jump-ball 1st dn). And our new WR corp looked promising: TJGraham for 117 and a TD, Tobais Palmer for 96 and a TD. And Graham was couple yards shy of running back another kick return and adding to his record for most return yards @ NCSU (and 5th in ACC history), but alas, it was was called back for a silly blocking penalty behind the play.
Underwood and Washington both did their part. Hopefully Mustafa's return will encourage our running game to be more of a factor.
defense lost the game. hopefully that will improve (especially upon the return of captain sweezy. and rieskamp (and teal). DBs, STEP IT UP!!

Both good points. It is especially irritating to watch Wake get away with those plays every year. Maybe not last year since we destroyed them but TOB should have them prepared for those plays. We will be OK. The Atlantic is just as crap as us. I don't care if FSU is ranked #4. They haven't earned it.

TOB has until the end of the 2012 season. That's the trade he made - he gets a pass this year if we make a legitimate run at the ACC title in Glennon's senior year. If the rest of the team (no more bullshit excuses, it will be 100% his team) still sucks and/or Glennon isn't good, he can fuck off just like every other coach in our history 9/11/2011 1:10:31 AM |

Wake Forest is a shitty team to have on your schedule early. A lot of gimmick and misdirection plays. And our defensive line is giving the qb waaaaay to much time to pass.

ITT: Failure to recognize sarcasm.
Also, Glennon didn't have a good game. He lucked out on two bombs which basically double his passing yardage. Consistency wins football games, when you get to the point when you have to start throwing them 65 yards you're already in a bad place.
That being said, I was glad to see that he can actually throw that far. We've been hearing about his arm-cannon for a long time now and that was the first deep ball he's ever actually thrown. 9/11/2011 9:37:18 AM |

I wouldn't say that he really lucked out on those passes. They were both plays where the ball was thrown where it needed to be and the receiver had the defensive back beat. He can air it out. Those passes still count, ya know? 9/11/2011 9:40:28 AM |

when you watch other team's offenses (especially wake) you can see that their offense has a purpose. They have things that they are going to come out and run on you and exploit from the defense until changes are made.
We seem to have no purpose on offense. Its like we pull a lever and take the play that comes out and we run a random shuffle of 5 different plays all game. Its been like this since TOB got here. Then, when the game is lost, our offense suddenly has purpose and aggressively peruses to go down the field and score. If only we could come out and play like we are down, 21 points, we would have a pretty good offense.
Yes this game was the defenses fault but wake is a team that is pretty tricky on offense and dogshit on defense. We should have beat them in a shootout. 6 points in the first half was inexcusable. I thought we were playing that way because Glennon wasn't capable of making throws beyond 10 yards but that obviously was proven wrong in the 2nd half. 9/11/2011 9:57:24 AM |
adder All American 3901 Posts user info edit post |
I think glennon was being restricted in the first half and in the second half they let him just run with it. Our vanilla offensive approach is trying to establish a steady ground game by pounding it down their throats (Wisconsin is a great example of this style right now).

I'll put it this way I feel much better about our offense but the defense still worries me (we need our injured players back ASAP so we can finally put some pressure on). The difference between last years defense and the previous years was simply the ability of our defense to put pressure on opposing teams QB's and force quick throws. 9/11/2011 10:19:41 AM |

100% man. you have to get to the qb in about 3 seconds and it works brilliantly. sweezy back in the lineup with rieskamp, which are 2 absolute beasts will be a big boost in the coming 2 weeks
mustafa green in on the running game will be a major influx of life into the offense as well. i mean can you imagine underwood being our #3 back??
it's gonna get real interesting as the year goes on as we get these important players back and glennon/receivers and OLine mesh. 9/11/2011 10:24:38 AM |

Yea the key to the D's issues this year is the lack of pressure on the QB. Price had all day yesterday.
This has some to do with injuries, but I think the larger issue is this staff's inability to recruit quality pass rushers. Every year we are patching holes on an untalented defensive line with JUCO kids. 9/11/2011 10:27:51 AM |

^ I agree that underwood should be #1, but both washington and underwood were pretty effective in the 1st half, then we got down so much that we were forced to pass. But the run game wasn't bad yesterday.
On defense we just seem so much slower than wake. We would pressure the qb, or get to the rb in the backfield but we were just chasing him around because we seemed like we were running in quicksand. It's like we just lack athleticism or speed on D. Maybe that'll change when we get healthy. 9/11/2011 11:03:25 AM |
