Nah

College football has had NO tournament, baseball, NBA, and NHL play series. Your logic doesn't hold. Most exciting sports tournament for me.

And what tiebreaker scenario would you propose?

I don't think you can blame a team for using the rules to it's advantage and you've always got to have tiebreakers for pool play formats in any sport.

But I do think it's a fair criticism of soccer in many facets that it provides massive incentives toward settling, stalling, and drawing as opposed to going for the win, the score, attack, etc.

It's not like the entire tournament is based on points, it's just a way to determine the field of 16 teams. Single elimination from here on

no kidding... you think FIFA is corrupt in choosing the site of the cup, I can't imagine how bad it would be if they seeded the teams like a selection committee.

If a NFL team loses in Week 17 they backed in to the playoffs!!!!!! Week 17 is the only week that matters!!!

Is how stupid some of America is right now.

People hear tournament and think NCAA basketball when really it's a 3 game regular season with half the teams going to the playoffs. Casual fans here would understand that better than group stage and knockout round.

I would be cool of the knockout rounds were home/away aggregates, but that would be too elaborate to pull off.

worst poster of the day or troll?. Teams with losing records have made the playoffs in professional baseball, hockey, basketball AND football and you're going to complain about a team making the 2nd round in a tournament where they went 1-1-1 in one of the toughest groups?

In NASCAR you can technically win a championship without winning a race

But relax soccer fans. Your sport routinely has games end in ties. Some people are going to think that's unacceptable.

yep. understood, but someone coming in here and posting that nonsense is the same person that would be annoyed if someone came into a baseball thread and said "omg worst sport ever. someone can lose 70 games in a season and still make the playoffs!".

that just guarantees a spot; someone applied the new Cup rules to last season and Jr would have won the Championship, and he didn't win any races last year, so the new rules allow for a non-winner to be Champion

The loudest roar in Buffalo Wild Wings was the second Portugal goal. lol! You could tell neither team in the US game was trying to push it too much and let the other teams catch them.

Did we win?

I forgot to watch.

Alright, we lost! And we're still in the World Cup!

How are the game times gonna work out? Will there be opportunities to drink at odd hours and stay up 'til dawn?

We did it! USA! Ok so we looked pretty bad in our actual game and if we play like that again we are done... But we did it! Now to make the next step and keep it going. Belgium is beatable but its gonna take the Portugal performance minus the last second fail.

^ I don't think we looked bad really. I think we had a careful and measured approach that was tailored to the match. You have to realize the US was also extremely tired after all that traveling and playing in Manaus. Compared to the US the Germans were relatively fresh if you ask me. I think the intensity and focus of the first two matches was missing but it was understandable.

This is probably the only time I will agree with Lalas but Klinsmann did have three very different approaches and all three were enough to get the result we needed. Today wasn't the best but we have played an elite team and I would say played much better than we played against Ghana.

Two big things I will point out and this isn't an excuse, Altidore and Bradely. Bradley needs to get it together quick. 3 dross match's if you ask me. Altidore is also a big miss for us. I think those two playing well and on the pitch and this team gets 3 points against Portugal and draws tonight.

I'm really happy being on the opposite side of the bracket as Brazil and Germany. We're also avoiding Netherlands until the semis. Probably the best spot we could have ended up in honestly in terms of having a chance to advance.

I mean the defense wasn't bad but we have got to generate more possession and chances. 0 goals doesn't win you too many games in the knockout rounds. I have hope we can get our groove back now that the pressure is off though. We need Bradley to find his form Badley that seems to be the missing piece.

I think they'll be fine on offense again. They scored 2 goals in both games that were played before Germany. Dempsey said afterwards they were playing for the draw. Germany didn't look to be their normal selves either. Both teams were cool with turning off the offense and maybe getting lucky like Germany did. As long as they didn't get destroyed like Spain did in their first game both teams knew they were probably moving on.

Di Maria and Lavezzii scare me more from a tactical standpoint. Kun Aguero is out rest of WC though..

Obviously in a one-on-one situation Messi is ridiculous though.

Fair. All I mean is two of their biggest three strengths is our major weakness. We've been burnt on the flanks time and again. Messi is obviously the scariest thing in the World Cup.
