Not even really a dominant center, just a good roleplaying body down low that can defend and rebound.

Vandenberg isn't that person.

Having a Ewing or an Olajuwon or Shaq is pretty rare if you think about it. Much rarer than having good guards.

Yeah...dominant centers aren't necessary. It would be nice if they could get a self-created bucket or two...but all that is needed is someone that can defend well, rebound well, and finish putbacks.

This is a guard's game.

Next Wednesday is the first day of the fall signing period. A big sigh of relief will be let out when we can get these kids' signatures on the LOIs.

CBK is undoubtedly a guards game. Go down the list of every NCAA champion in the last 15-20 years and everyone of them is loaded in the backcourt.

Yes there are some Noah, May, Baxter, Hansbrough, Okafor type players as well but there are tons of teams who have won without great big men . Even more who have gone deep without them.

Any good big man prospect will almost always leave for the NBA before they are developed enough to really dominate at the college level. Think Ced Simmons type players.

That isn't necessarily true for guards like Kemba, Dixon, Felton, Lawson, etc. Many don't leave until after their junior year and most are already dominating the college game. The NBA isnt as willing to draft a guard on potential as they are a big man.

As a college coach, you would almost want the guys who are big - ~6-10/11 who are not quite good enough to be lottery pick worthy, but who will stay at least 3 years.

If TBDV was 10-15% better from a coordination standpoint, he would be ideal

perfect day for his visit. great weather, great win against unc, and a good crowd at the scrimmage

I don't think that's what he meant. If NC State was out, Stanford would be too (looking at the way the tweet was phrased) and it makes no sense that he would visit Stanford if it was out.

I think he meant to say that all five schools are still in, he was just noting State and Stanford's visits especially. But I could be wrong.

I took it that meant he's down to those five schools, two of which he's currently visiting.

"Packing it in

Do you think Amile Jefferson has narrowed his college choices to the five schools he has visited? Or do you think Villanova still has a chance since it is in Philly?

- Jeremy from Greensboro

It is tough to get a read on what exactly Jefferson's school list is, but there is a strong feeling that N.C. State has the momentum in his recruitment.

Jefferson is visiting North Carolina State this weekend, and word has it that his entire immediate family and a couple of his coaches are making the trip with him. That is an indication that Jefferson is quite serious about the Wolfpack.

It wouldn't surprise me if coach Mark Gottfried's staff is able to secure a commitment before the end of the early signing period. "

Four-star forward Amile Jefferson visiting NC State
Whispers: Wolfpack pushing to top class

Amile Jefferson isn't used to hearing hundreds of fans chanting his name, but he was welcomed by the action during his official visit to NC State this past weekend.

The 6-foot-8, 197-pound Jefferson enjoyed his fourth official visit and getting the chance to meet the NC State players and further his relationships with Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried. The Philadelphia Friends Central High standout got to watch NC State defeat arch-rival 13-0 in an emotionally-charged atmosphere Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium. He then headed over to the Red-White intra-squad scrimmage at the RBC Center, where the fans repeatedly chanted his name.

"I really enjoyed myself," Jefferson said. "The chanting was weird at first, but humbling, definitely humbling. To see how their fans support what those guys do and the sport of basketball at NC State was ridiculous. To have that many people at a scrimmage [10,982 fans] was unbelievable."

Philadelphia Friends Central High senior forward Amile Jefferson had an enjoyable official trip to NC State this weekend.

Jefferson was able to get a first-hand look at how he'd fit into NC State schemes and what he'd be able to add to the program.

"I really like what they do," Jefferson said. "Their guards and wings are really interchangeable. That is what I liked. They set screens, come off ball screens and can put the ball on the floor at the top of the key."

Jefferson unofficially visited NC State in August with his father, Malcolm Musgrove. His father and two of his close friends made the trip down this past weekend.

"Last time was really the more informative period where I learned a lot about the school, and got to meet the chancellor [Randy Woodson] and athletic director [Debbie Yow], but the players weren't there," Jefferson said. "This time was really about getting to know the players more and getting to talk to the coaches. I wanted to really build the relationship with those guys that I could probably be playing with."

Jefferson said he got to know graduate point guard Alex Johnson and enjoyed talking to him.

"I got to be with a bunch of different guys, but Alex was great," Jefferson said. "He is a really good person. It was great to hang out with all the players. I pretty much have a good feel for it after being down here twice. After interacting with the players and coaches, I have a great feel of the school."

Jefferson was able to talk to Yow during the weekend, and learned about her vision of the men's basketball program.

"She is a great person to talk to and is wonderful," Jefferson said. "She knows her stuff. She knows what she is doing."

Jefferson also got to hang out with NC State senior combo guard commit Rodney Purvis of Raleigh Upper Room Christian Academy, who was his teammate at adidas Nations. Purvis, point guard Tyler Lewis of Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy and small forward T.J. Warren of Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy, are part of NC State's No. 3-ranked recruiting class.

"Rodney is a good friend of mine," Jefferson said. "It was good to spend time with him."

Jefferson was arguably one of the most productive players in the country between individual camps and playing with Philly's Finest this offseason. He led the NBPA Camp in scoring and was MVP of the adidas Nations title game. He also played in the Boost Mobile Elite 24 outdoor all-star game at Venice Beach in the Los Angeles area.

The addition of No. 36-ranked Jefferson could push the Wolfpack's recruiting class to one of the top two spots according to Rivals.com recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer. Being part of a program-changing group is appealing to Jefferson.

"It is definitely good to know that you'd have a chance to come in and be good and make a lot of things happen," Jefferson said. "Coach Gottfried told me to just make sure I felt comfortable and he let me know that I could be a big part of the success of the program. He's just a great guy."

NC State assistant coach Rob Moxley has spear-headed Jefferson's recruitment and watched him throughout July and has made several trips to Philadelphia Friends Central High this fall. His senior season starts in early December.

"He is a great guy and I have a lot of fun talking to him," Jefferson said. "As a recruiter, he's been good and I've built some camaraderie with him."

Jefferson previously officially visited Kentucky, Connecticut and Ohio State, and unofficially visited Temple and Maryland this fall. Stanford and Villanova are also in the mix. The November signing period runs from Nov. 9-16.

Jefferson said he doesn't have a leader yet in the recruiting process.

"I still have a lot to think about and I'm still deciding," Jefferson said. "I still haven't sat down with my family and talk to my dad to see how he enjoyed the trip and what he thought.""

Best first recruit: (new coach signee)

Borzello: I know I wrote that Rodney Purvis was overrated earlier, but he was still a monster commitment for Mark Gottfried. He’s an in-state kid who had previously committed to Louisville and had interest or offers from Duke, Connecticut, Memphis, Missouri, Ohio State and others. He’s a big-time scorer who can be a go-to-guy.

Not all bad from the guy.

Edit:
Also from article:

Best backcourt:

Goodman: There's honestly no one that truly stands out, so I'm going to go with N.C. State - even though I think all three of their guys maybe a tad overrated. The bottom line is that Mark Gottfried and his staff have added a trio of Top 100 players: Rodney Purvis, T.J. Warren and Tyler Lewis. Honestly, I think I like Lewis more than the other two. He doesn't look the part, but he knows how to play and brings a toughness to the table. Purvis can really score it and Warren can really shoot it.
