Absolutely AWESOME! I like the possibilities. Might have to invest in some micro radio stuff myself. Cheap ass throw together stuff is fun; I used to do a lot of that with control line.

On another note, started cutting out ribs and such for my plug-in wing extensions. Am planning on extending wingspan by roughly 32 inches. That'll be around 82 inches total span. Around 980 in^2 total wing area.

Well, I got out there late...Jeremy and I went to a primitive fire-making class first...

...and then we went out to fly, and it started raining.

Next week. Dammit.

On another note, saw dustm, SaabTurbo, El Borracho, and theDuke866.

And of course, the usual Aero guys.

Good bunch a'folks!

^That's a cool-ass plane, man. Amazing how it can take being launched like that.

I'm slowly but surely gettin' back into an RC groove.

ok so next time i'm gonna *try* to have that 6' glider i designed and 2/3 completed 6 years ago finished and flying with a 049 and power pod... i'd like to have something steady and still relatively maneuverable going that spectators can have a hand at and have some fun. Its elev/ail/rudder with a 2' flat center section and 2' outer panels with a small amount of polyhedral.

dan, i'm looking forward to seeing what your plane will do with those wing extensions... i'm predicting cruising at just above idle at oh, say 10mph whats the predicted timeframe on those?

I've got the left one partially framed up. I'm thinking I can have it mostly done and the right one framed up tonite. In retrospect, I'm thinking I could have made them even longer, but we'll try these for now. Each one is 15 7/8" span. Chord is around 11 7/8". I didn't want to go too big, because the airfoil is so damn thick.

After frame up, I'll have to butcher the tips of my wing a little bit to put in the plug-in tubes. Then I will need to figure out just how I want to secure the tips. I'm thinking maybe one or two small strips of brass maybe 1/2" x 1", each with two holes, and woodscrews. It wouldn't be super quick to convert, but not over 4 or 5 minutes.

Duke's granddad's store. Definitely an experience. Hope to get down there some time soon to buy more STUFF!

It's really easy to dump a ton of money there (not because of prices because they're really good), because he has so much to choose from. Something for everybody

^I could eat that. Or bring good tuna salad, maybe some chicken salad, macaroni salad, potato salad...and some bread with which to concoct a sammich (not with the mac or tater salad, though)

And I do dig hard boiled eggs, even deviled eggs. Or egg salad. Or chunks of egg in my tuna salad or my chicken salad.

Shit, I can eat anything...except chitlins or stewed okra.

My wing extensions. Just about everything has been cut from 1/16 balsa, except for the spars, which are 1/4" square.

The main spars are 1/4x1/2, but for the ends, I decided that we don't need all that. Still debating about putting shear webbing between the upper and lower spars.

I have decided that i need a new digital camera.

i'd imagine you'd be ok without the webs, but in combo with the leading edge sheeting you make an insanely strong D-tube... which you know... and a lil 1/16 balsa dont weigh that much.

Had to go to Chapel Hill today...that took up most of the afternoon. Definitely not my choice. As a matter of fact, I would love to have been out there, throttling back and trimming for level flight and practicing my lazy turns and mush-along approaches, and shooting three-point landings. That was on my mind all day long yesterday, and most of today. But due to the circumstances being what they were, it 'twarn't in the cards. I am gonna do my damnedest to go during the week, though. Need my fix.

On another note, I've been drawing up my Kadet Senior kinda-clone. Shooting for between 72 and 80 inch span. Reckon transparent covering and ultra high-output white LED's will make a cool lighting system?

How was YOUR day, Bryan-O?

Damn man, dang-on responsibilities

I've seen transparent covered planes with lighting and man they look cool! That sounds like a sweet idea!

My day was interesting... Matt and I showed up at the field like 3ish... Matt brought his gas r/c tourin car and i brought the DLG. It was pretty windy/gusty and i was unable to get any decent flights for like 45 minutes when the wind started to calm... At that point the guy with the calibri (mini hlg) that wears the aviator sunglasses (man i suck with names) had been there like 20 minutes, and we were both trying to find some lift. I was way out on the far side of the field towards the thin tree line, and i got one really really nice flight and actually gained some altitude in a thermal! FIRST TIME EVER! 'Twas quite exciting and the best one of the day.

I had a few other decently long flights in that same area, but then my fuse repair (that i broke thursday) repair failed (i had just glued it back) so we went back to my friend's dorm and i 5 minute epoxied some kevlar on there. We came back and I flew more, but the thermal activity was all but gone, and the air was completely calm so I did some CG adjustment and took out 1/16oz of lead in the nose. After that i started seeing how hard i could launch... This went well for about 5 throws, then the vertical stab popped where it connects to the boom... luckilly it hung on and the plane flew well enough for me to have a normal, yet rudderless flight and an uneventful landing. I ca'd it back in place and continued flying until it was starting to get a little dim out, at which time my battery was getting a little dim. All in all a very nice day except for Ron crashing matt's car into a tree... He started doing a speed run and lost it. Minimal damage.

After that matt and I returned to the dorm and he continued on the Decathalon and i continued on the P-40. I finished the bulk of the wing, fuse, and tail feathers... Tomorow it gets covered and gear installed. I mounted the motor in there with hot glue on the gearbox... Heres hopin that it doesnt get warm enough to come loose! Its hot melt glue so I figure I'm safe. Both should be ready for this weekend or even before, so let me know when you go out and fly if you go durring the week (and after 5...)

oh yeah... and remember when we were flying at the end of the field w/a parking lot? i think that was a good idea cuz the cops told us to stay off the grass, and the only place we can park down there is on the grass... and we go out regularly enough to where we really could cause a problem.

not to mention the grass is a lot shorter. I am really itching to shoot approaches and do touch-and-go's, and while the grass is still too tall, it's not un-tackle-able with a weedeater. I swear I'm gonna do that. Either that or haul out a lawnmower and cut it.

hey theres a carpet place in the same building our suite is in here at work and the mexicans throw really nice remnants in our dumpster... i'm gonna grab some for kneelin / airplane matts to deal with that dirt and the ants. sometimes they throw out the sample books which is cool cuz they are nice rectangles.

Duke's predicament truly sucks ass...engine would sit there and hit every now and then, but wouldn't catch. About three of us worked up an unholy sweat trying to crank it.

My Ni-Starter went dead in the process. I forgot a damn glowplug wrench, else we would have swapped plugs.

This week sometime, Duke. I'm ready to find a field that I can take off and land on. We oughta try the damn soccer fields. They're perfect. They just have fuckers playing soccer on them all the time.

hey guys, sorry i made a "helping my mom" trip to charlotte this weekend... the p-40 isnt ready yet either, but will be by the next time i can fly, which wont be this weekend, but the next.

I did get to fly the DLG today in front of this big ass pink church in charlotte... My mom got a chance to see it go finally, and she thought it was quite relaxing to watch. The whole front of this church was windows, and the congregation was facing me, so they got a nice show

Well, Bryan...my extra wing panels didn't do quite how I was hoping they would. They look purty, and the plug-in tubes work great, but it's not quite the picnic that I hoped it would be.

Of course, the gusty wind didn't help matters any...more testing will have to be done to establish a sound conclusion...I gotta get over this fear I have of letting it gain too much altitude (on account of not having the best vision and all).

There was a fella out there today that had a fanfold something...had a brushless motor and a 3-cell Li-Po...I didn't get to see 'er fly cuz he broke off the motor mount, but he said he gets unlimited vertical for about 20 minutes. I thought it was cool as hell.

Missed ya out there man, but I bet mom was glad to have ye.

yeah that guy was out there the day i went looking for Adam's battery with the metal detector... that little plane was quite amazing! he also had a nice (and inexpensive) dlg... it flew VERY well, and launched quite intuitively... i forgot what its called but the kit is like $70

Dan... gaining too much altitude, eh?
so is it just hard to control in general? or was the wind deciding the path of your plane more than you? i'm looking forward to seein it in person... hope you get it handling right soon!

hey duke did you try upping your fuel's nitro content? sometimes that helps with a cranky engine.

That's a damn plenty for that motor. Port timing and compression ratio limit the usefulness of nitro...and my bet is that 20 percent would be the MAX that you'd want to try and run. 15 is a good mix. I used to run 15 exclusively...but this last gallon I got free, and it's 10.

I do have about half a quart of 25% nitro...fer the lil .049's...
