Iran Threatens to Shoot Down U.S. Drones

Quote :
"TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's intelligence chief on Wednesday accused the United States of flying spy drones over its nuclear sites and threatened to shoot down the unmanned surveillance crafts.

Intelligence Minister Ali Yunesi comments backed a report in The Washington Post on Sunday that quoted unnamed U.S. officials as saying the drones have been flying over Iran for nearly a year to seek evidence of nuclear weapons programs.

"U.S. spying activities over Iranian airspace have been going since a long time ago," Yunesi told reporters.

"Most of the shining objects that our people see in Iran's airspace are American spying equipment used to spy on Iran's nuclear and military facilities," the minister told reporters.

He said they would not reveal anything the United States doesn't already know.

"Our nuclear activities are open and very transparent. Our military activities are all legal," Yunesi said. He spoke while visiting a prison for dissidents under the Shah that has been turned into a museum.

The Washington Post reported the drones had been flying over Iran from U.S. military bases in Iraq (news - web sites) and were equipped with air filters to pick up traces of nuclear activity.

In December, the Iranian air force was ordered to shoot down any unknown flying objects. At the time, there were reports in Iranian newspapers that Iran had discovered spying devices in pilotless planes its air defense force had shot down.

"If any of the bright objects come close, they will definitely meet our fire and will be shot down. We possess the necessary equipment to confront them," Yunesi said.

Last month, Yunesi said the United States had been conducting aerial surveillance, but he neither mentioned drones nor nuclear and military sites. Yunesi said U.S. commandoes had not entered Iran, adding the security forces would catch any American who did.

Iranian media has been gripped by a kind of "flying object" fever with dozens of reported sightings in recent weeks. State-run media has reported numerous sightings of unknown objects flying over parts of Iran where nuclear facilities are located.

The objects were spotted near Natanz — which has a uranium enrichment plant — and Isfahan, which has a facility for producing uranium hexaflouride gas, the feedstock for enriching uranium.

Uranium enriched to low grades is used for fuel in nuclear reactors. Further enrichment makes it suitable for atomic bombs.

The United States accuses Iran of having a secret program to manufacture nuclear weapons. Iran denies this, saying its nuclear program is entirely for the generation of electricity.

Iran Will Know How to Build Bomb in 6 Months - Israel

Quote :
"LONDON/TEHRAN (Reuters) - Israel said on Wednesday Tehran was just six months away from being able to build an atomic bomb, as Iranian state television rattled markets by reporting an explosion near Iran's only nuclear power plant.

A senior Iranian military officer later said the explosion in south Iran, initially reported as caused by a missile, was blasting work during the construction of a dam.

But the initial report by Al-Alam satellite channel jolted financial markets, worried about any possible U.S. or Israeli strike to end Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Washington believes Iran is seeking an atomic bomb, an accusation denied by Tehran which says its nuclear program is for generating electricity only.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, whose country regards Iran as one of its most dangerous enemies, said Tehran was "trying very hard to develop the nuclear bomb."

"The question is not if the Iranians will have a nuclear bomb in 2009, 10 or 11, the main question is when are they going to have the knowledge to do it," he told reporters during a visit to London.

"We believe in six months from today they will end all the tests and experiments they are doing to have that knowledge."

While Europe has pursued a policy of engagement with Iran, the United States and Israel have taken a more aggressive stance. Washington has said it favors diplomacy but does not rule out any option, and Israel has hinted at possible military action.

An Israeli air strike on the Iraqi reactor Osiraq in 1981 dealt a severe blow to Saddam Hussein's nuclear program.

The Al-Alam satellite channel, which broadcasts in Arabic, reported a powerful explosion near the town of Dailam, about 100 miles from Iran's only nuclear power plant.

It quoted witnesses as saying the explosion was caused by an aircraft firing a missile in a deserted area near Dailam, but also cited a local source saying a fuel tank may have fallen from an Iranian plane

But if we do that we won't be able to turn around and say we were 'delivering the freedom' when no WMDs turn up or it becomes apparant that Iran was not a threat. Plus that would prevent the globalists from sending tens of thousands of American boys and girls to die, become horribly maimed , and sick due to DU poisoning.

Scott Ritter is a complete attention whore. Prior to the war he said that there was there was the possibility that Iraq had no WMDs, although he never said that with any certainty. As soon as the WMD search fizzled, he began touting himself as the man who knew for certain before the war that there were no WMDs. He has used his failure to decide before the war as evidence that he knew the real truth in an attempt to give himself a shred of credibility.

Sadly for Scott Ritter, he was arrested on child pornography charges and now write editorials that only Al Jazeera will publish.

Iran Says It Won't Give Up Nuclear Plans

Quote :
"TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said Tuesday it would not give up its disputed nuclear program in return for economic and political incentives, the official IRNA news agency said.
Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi reiterated that the Islamic state's nuclear program would be used to generate electricity and not make bombs, as Washington charges.

"Iran's legitimate right of having nuclear technology can not be exchanged for any kind of incentives," IRNA quoted Kharrazi as saying.

The European Union, led by Britain, Germany and France, has been trying to tempt Iran to turn a temporary freeze on its sensitive nuclear work, such as uranium enrichment, into permanent cessation in return for trade and other benefits.

While President Bush has not ruled out military action, U.S. officials said Monday he was close to deciding whether to join Europe in offering incentives to Iran in exchange for Tehran's agreement to give up nuclear weapons.

Tehran denies it is developing atomic arms and says its program is solely for generating electricity.

Kharrazi said Iran was determined to go ahead with its nuclear activities.

"It is not the right of our government to swap it. It is the Iranian nation's right," Kharrazi said.

"The Iranian nation would never allow giving up the country's nuclear program."

Inducements proposed by European officials included letting Iran eventually join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and providing Tehran with an Airbus airliner.

Kharrazi said Iran would review progress in the talks in mid-March before taking any decision on whether to resume uranium enrichment which it froze in November.

"We want to reach a formula which removes the Europeans' concerns and at the same time preserves our rights," Kharrazi said.

Asked about a possible attack by the United States, which has repeatedly said a nuclear-armed Iran would be unacceptable, Kharrazi said : "I believe the Americans have gained enough wisdom after the Iraq invasion to avoid attacking Iran."

Iran Starts Building New Nuclear Plant

Quote :
"VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has started building a research reactor that could eventually produce enough plutonium for one bomb per year, ignoring calls to scrap the project, diplomats close to the United Nations said on Thursday.

"Iran has laid the foundations for the research reactor at Arak," a Western diplomat close to the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

In September, the IAEA board of governors passed a resolution calling on Iran "as a further confidence-building measure, voluntarily to reconsider its decision to start construction of a research reactor modified by heavy water."

Heavy-water reactors can be used to produce significant amounts of bomb-grade plutonium, which can then be extracted from the spent fuel.

Diplomats on the IAEA's 35-member board, as well as diplomats close to the IAEA, said they learned the foundations had been laid from photos taken by a commercial satellite.

The United States and other countries critical of Iran have questioned the need for this reactor, which is expected to be ready the end of this decade at the earliest.

"Iran has provided changing and contradictory rationales to the IAEA for this project, which would be well suited for plutonium production," the head of the U.S. delegation to the IAEA meeting, Jackie Sanders, told the IAEA board on Wednesday.

Iranian officials were not available for comment.

IAEA deputy director general Pierre Goldschmidt said earlier this week that Iran planned to proceed with the 40-megawatt heavy water research reactor project but gave no details. This size reactor could yield enough plutonium for approximately one bomb per year, diplomats and nuclear experts say.

Washington accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons under cover of a civilian atomic energy program. Tehran denies this, insisting its nuclear ambitions are confined to the peaceful generation of electricity.

The European Union also suspects Iran is developing the capability to produce atomic arms but hopes a French, British and German offer of incentives will persuade Iran to abandon any such plans

Iran Says to Make Atomic Fuel if Sent to UN Council

Quote :
"TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran (news - web sites) said on Saturday it would return to making nuclear fuel and that the Middle East would become even more unstable if the Islamic Republic was sent to the U.N. Security Council over its atomic program.
U.S. officials said on Friday they were still looking to haul Iran before the council for possible sanctions, but have not yet been assured of EU backing for this move should European attempts to broker an atomic deal fail.

Washington argues that Tehran is making fuel for atomic warheads. Iran insists it intends to use enriched uranium only in power stations.

"If the Americans succeed in referring Iran's case to the Security Council, Iran will immediately suspend all its voluntary confidence-building measures," Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani told a conference.

Iran agreed last year to suspend making nuclear fuel for a few months while it held talks with Britain, France and Germany. The EU states are encouraging Iran to drop its fuel program in return for economic incentives.

"Parliamentarians may even come up with a harder decision," Rohani added.

Many conservative parliamentarians have called for Iran to pull out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

In the shorter term they have threatened that Iran will not ratify the Additional Protocol to the NPT, which permits snap U.N. inspections of nuclear sites.

REGIONAL INSTABILITY

"The security and stability of the region would become a problem," said the mid-ranking cleric who is secretary-general of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

"This would be a particular problem for the United States because it has a lot of troops and equipment in region and is in fact our imposed neighbor."

Iran often complains that it feels besieged by the United States, which has troops in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites) and has conducted military exercises in the Caspian Sea.

But Rohani still held out hope that talks with Europeans could pay dividends, saying Iran had given the Europeans "an objective guarantee" that it was not seeking arms.

"The ball is in the Europeans' court right now," he said, adding Iran would make the terms of its guarantee public if the European rejected it.

He said any European position asking for an end to the fuel cycle -- enriching uranium to make nuclear fuel -- as an objective guarantee, was unacceptable.

"My feeling is that Berlin and Paris have accepted the middle of the road approach," he continued.

Iran-EU talks continue in Geneva next week. "

Its an extremely biased article that says that America cannot defeat Iran because Iran has anti-ship missiles. It also bases many of its claims on the notion that America has been defeated in Iraq, which simply isn't the case. Iran: Uranium Enrichment Plant Underground

Quote :
"NATANZ, Iran - An Iranian official confirmed Monday a uranium enrichment plant in central Iran (news - web sites) is underground as a protection against airstrikes, but insisted that is not a sign the program aims to produce nuclear weapons"

Quote :
"
U.S. officials have said building nuclear facilities underground is inconsistent with Iran's contention its atomic program is intended only for the generation of electricity. The Iranians deny Washington's accusation that they are trying to build nuclear weapons.

Ali Akbar Salehi, a nuclear affairs adviser to the foreign minister, said U.S. and Israeli threats forced Iran to take precautions to protect its technology, including the string of centrifuges used to enrich uranium — a process that can produce fuel for nuclear reactors that generate electricity but also make material suitable for atomic warheads.

"To protect the safety of equipment against possible danger of aerial attack, a major part of the plant has been constructed underground, especially where thousands of centrifuges need to be located," Salehi told The Associated Press.

It was the first public confirmation by Iran that the Natanz facility is underground.

On Saturday, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Hasan Rowhani, confirmed Iran is building a tunnel next to another nuclear facility in Isfahan. He said that the tunnel, under a mountain, will be used to store unspecified equipment and that air attacks would not be able to destroy it.

The central cities of Natanz and Isfahan house the heart of Iran's nuclear program. The conversion facility in Isfahan reprocesses uranium ore concentrate, known as yellowcake, into uranium hexaflouride gas. The gas is then taken to Natanz and fed into the centrifuges for enrichment.

The facility at Natanz is at the foot of a mountain in an otherwise barren desert some 200 miles south of the capital, Tehran. Some of its buildings, which are believed to be administrative offices, are visible from the main road running from Kashan to Natanz.

There are military bases not far from the facility. Travelers who stop on the road close to the facility are approached by security officers in plainclothes and asked to leave.

Iran began its nuclear program in secrecy, and now says it has achieved proficiency in the full range of activities involved in enriching uranium.

Iran's former president, Hashemi Rafsanjani, said Sunday that Iran initially developed the program in secret and bought nuclear materials on the black market because of U.S. sanctions and European restrictions that denied Iran access to advanced civilian nuclear technology.

U.S. Panel Faults Intelligence on Iran Weapons

Quote :
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A presidential commission investigating prewar intelligence about Iraq (news - web sites)'s weapons has concluded that U.S. data on Iran (news - web sites)'s arms is "inadequate," The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing people who have been briefed on the panel's work.

In a report to President Bush (news - web sites) later this month, the panel will describe American intelligence on Iran "as inadequate to allow firm judgments about Iran's weapons program," the newspaper reported in an article posted on its Web site.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=578&e=8&u=/nm/20050309/pl_nm/iran_intelligence_usa_dc

A spokesman for the nine-member commission declined direct comment on the New York Times report.

"The report itself isn't complete yet and the full details will be presented to the president," spokesman Larry McQuillan said.

Bush accuses Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons and called it part of an "axis of evil." Tehran insists its nuclear program is intended solely to generate electricity.

The New York Times report said one person who described the panel's deliberations and conclusions characterized American intelligence on Iran as "scandalous" given the importance and relative openness of the country, compared to North Korea (news - web sites).

The newspaper said its sources would not be more specific in describing the inadequacies. But it quoted former government officials who are experts on Iran as saying that American intelligence agencies have had little success in the kinds of human spying needed to understand Iranian decision-making.

The commission's report, after a 14-month investigation, was also expected to be sharply critical of American intelligence on North Korea. But some who have been briefed on the report said they regarded the record on Iran as more worrisome, The New York Times said.

The panel had unrestricted access to the most senior people and the most sensitive documents of the intelligence agencies, the newspaper said.

The commission was established to investigate flaws in the intelligence cited in launching the Iraq war. Claims that Iraq had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction were the main reason cited by Bush for the war. "

Why don't you just start a blog and link news stories to that? In all seriousness, thats what I would do if I spent this much time doing what you do. I'm sure that you would reach a much broader audience as well.

IRAN REPORTS U.S. AIRCRAFT OVER NUKE SITES
http://www.menewsline.com/stories/2005/march/03_10_4.html

Quote :
"NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran has reported flights by U.S. military aircraft over nuclear facilities near the borders with Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iran's state-controlled media have reported flights by U.S. aircraft over a range of nuclear facilities, including the Bushehr nuclear reactor constructed by Russia. The U.S. reconnaissance flights were conducted as Iran was said to be accelerating its nuclear weapons programs in facilities unaccessible to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In late December 2004, Teheran ordered the Iranian Air Force to shoot down unidentified aircraft flying anywhere in the country. Iranian officials have accused Israel and the United States of seeking to conduct reconnaissance flights over Iran.

Iran has deployed anti-aircraft missiles around major nuclear sites, including Bushehr. So far, there have been no reports of Iranian missile fire toward U.S. or Israeli warplanes. "

" a missile war with Iran that escalates to unlimited warfare seems likely. "

haha

yeah right.

unlimited warfare? no fucking way. not even a chance.

if we WERE to engage in even unlimited conventional warfare against iran, it would be over before it started.

that won't happen, though.

Iran Shuns EU, U.S. Trade Offer, Has `Right' to Nuclear Power

Quote :
" March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Iran played down the significance of trade incentives offered by the European Union and the U.S., saying they won't deprive the country of its ``right'' to build up nuclear power.

``No pressure, bribe or threat can make Iran give up its legitimate right'' to develop nuclear technology, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said in a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry's Web site. "

U.S. 'Hallucinating' Over Nuclear Talks, Iran Says

Quote :
"TEHRAN (Reuters) - Washington is "hallucinating" if it thinks Iran will scrap its nuclear fuel production plans in return for economic incentives, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying Sunday.

The United States offered the encouragements in support of the European Union which is negotiating with Tehran to try to persuade it to give up sensitive nuclear activities.

"U.S. officials are either unaware of the substance of the talks or (they are) hallucinating," Sirus Naseri, a senior member of Iran's nuclear negotiating team, told the official IRNA news agency.

Iran says it needs atomic technology to generate electricity and will never use it to make bombs, as the United States fears.

London's Sunday Times said Israel had drawn up plans for a combined air and ground attack on Iranian nuclear installations if diplomacy fails to halt Tehran's atomic program.

The newspaper said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his inner cabinet had given "initial authorization" for a unilateral attack at a private meeting last month.

Israel, which bombed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981, played down the report. Iran has said it will respond vigorously to any attack on its nuclear plants.

Washington gave practical backing for the EU's diplomatic approach Friday, offering to allow Iran to begin talks on joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) and consider letting it buy civilian airline parts if it ceased all activities that could produce fuel for nuclear power plants or atomic weapons.

Washington and the EU have warned Iran it faces referral to the U.N. Security Council, which could impose economic sanctions, if it fails to allay fears it wants the bomb. "

Israel 'plans to hit Iran plant'

Quote :
" ISRAEL has drawn up plans for a combined air and ground attack on Iranian nuclear installations if diplomacy fails to halt Tehran's atomic program, London's Sunday Times said.

The newspaper said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his inner cabinet had given "initial authorisation" for a unilateral attack on Iran at a private meeting last month.

US officials have indicated they would not stand in Israel's way if international diplomatic efforts to halt Iran's nuclear projects fail, the paper said.

"If all efforts to persuade Iran to drop its plans to produce nuclear weapons should fail, the US administration will authorise Israel to attack," the paper quoted an Israeli security source as saying.

Tehran, which has a stated goal of destroying the Jewish state, says its nuclear activities are aimed only at electricity generation but Washington and the European Union suspect Iran could use its program to make atomic bombs.

Iran has frozen nuclear enrichment while it tries to reach a negotiated settlement on its nuclear program with Britain, France and Germany.

Washington on Friday joined the drive to put pressure on Iran by offering it a start to World Trade Organisation membership talks and access to civil aircraft and spare parts if it abandons its most sensitive nuclear activities.

The newspaper said Israeli tactics included raids by elite commando units and air strikes by F-15 jets using bunker busting bombs to penetrate underground facilities.

It said Israeli forces had been simulating attacks on a mock-up of Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment plant in the last few months.

Israel, which says Iran is very close to being able to make a nuclear bomb, played down the report.

Asked if there was a possibility that Israel could attack Iranian nuclear installations, Vice Premier Shimon Peres said: "I don't think so."

Israel is believed to be the only country in the region with nuclear weapons, though it has not confirmed or denied their existence.

Israeli warplanes bombed Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor in a daring raid in 1981 to prevent it from making atomic bombs.

Tehran says it is prepared to confront any threats and that it would protect its nuclear sites.

"We will defend our nuclear sites with all our strength and we are ready to ward off any possible aggression," Iranian Defence Minister Ali Shamkhani told the semi-official INSA students news agency on Saturday.

US Vice-President Dick Cheney said in January that there was concern Israel might attack Iran if it "became convinced the Iranians had significant nuclear capability". "

Iran Says Ending U.S. Sanctions Won't Stop Enrichment Program

March 15 (Bloomberg) -- The lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran, while building confidence, won't make the country give up nuclear fuel enrichment, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said today.

Hey we don't have to do anything. We'll just conveniently let Israel use Iraqi airspace and go "OMG ISRAEL HOW COULD YOU!" when they blow the shit out of Iran's nuclear facilities.
