This pissed me off too.

The preamp on it just isn't very good, but if you normalize your audio before conversion, you shouldnt have this issue.

I garauntee there will be 3rd party ebook solutions this year.

"5. No video out"

At first, I thought about this too. But really, video out would be terrible. Except for slideshows, it would be a useless feature. Games and video would look horrible on monitors and tv's. Plus this is a portable device, that would just confuse markets with the PSOne.

It's not a PDA. It has a pretty darn good image handler to do what it's supposed to do, display images. Frankly I don't have any interest in editing photos on the device itself.

It's not a PDA, its a portable entertainment device. If you want to do work, get a Palm or PocketPC

It's coming.

"9. No file management software

The instruction booklet explains how to use everything. It's not the most super easy way to do it, but frankly Im glad they did it the way they did, rather than forcing us to use an iTunes-like application.

The reason it's done that way is to maintain compatibility with all the other Memory Stick devices. So you can plop your stick into a camera or printer or whatever and work with your data.

Quote :
"10. Video complications"

It's insanely simple to convert video using any of the 3 or 4 tools out there. The naming scheme is a bit retarded, but the psp recognizes the right titles, so it works out. And a 1gig memory stick is 100 bucks. A lot yes, but not insanely expensive.

I do wish someone would make a USB->CF or MemStick->CF adapter so we could pop in microdrives.

i just lifted the list but yeah i agree with your assesments of each, a few of them really need to be done, the only thing along the lines of video out that would be useful would be for movies or slideshow/pictures and such.

Picked my PSP up a couple of days ago, and I must say that I absolutely love it. I do carry it around everywhere, I keep mp3s on it, and I play games and watch movies. It's outstanding, I couldn't ask for more out of a handheld. I would never consider buying a DS, but I have no regrets at all about buying a PSP.

I bought both, I still own both. The PSP is an awesome system, no question about it, but it already has several great games onboard. The DS has a lot of potential as a portable gaming system, but it's been five months and the game selection is still ass. What a weak launch for what could be such a great system...

^ I agree. I see it turning into the next Virtual Boy. I sold mine early on to recoup b/c I realized how weak the launch was and it ain't gettin' better.

I was very close to buying a PSP, then I realized I would never have time to play it.

I have had my PSP since Launch day. I absolutely love the thing. It does everything I would need from a handheld gaming unit. I can't wait til the one gig sticks start coming more available so I can put more music/videos on there. For now I have 3 games: Twisted Metal, Wipeout and Untold Legends. All pretty good games. TM has more fun factor this go around compared to the last 3 releases. Wipeout looks damn sweet on the system and Untold Legends is an average hacknslash RPG.

I think that people would like the NDS a lot better if it had more launch games. But I must say that Metroid is excellent, although it sucks that I have to wait until like August to get the full game. I'm looking forward to Castlevania too. It needs more quality games if it is going to compete with the PSP.

Not really. I didn't see one interesting title in all the PSP E3 coverage. The DS had New Super Mario Bros., Nintendogs, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow which will be why I'll be picking one up sometime in the future.

Nintendogs turned out to be a huge hit in Japan.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/02/news_6126831.html

Quote :
"The Nintendo DS was trailing the PSP and PS2 the week before the release of Nintendogs, selling 21,698 units against 28,950 PSP units and 30,572 PS2 units. But when Nintendogs arrived, DS sales exploded to 96,191 units, outselling both the PSP (33,004) and the PS2 (33,080) combined. Sales of the DS are starting to settle down now, but as of the week of May 16, the DS continued to outsell both the PS2 and the PSP, selling 29,808 units, compared to 27,370 PSP units and 24,122 PS2 units. Adult-content publisher Glay'z will release five titles starting on July 8, while fellow publisher H.M.P. will release three additional titles on July 16. The movies will be priced between 1,995 yen ($18) and 3,990 yen ($37). "

How about games like WipEout Pure, Coded Arms, Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, SOCOM, Death Jr, etc. Oh yeah, and the fact that the PSP can connect to the XBox 360.

Yeah my own personal collection of PSP games is already better than the entire collection of DS games + all the games coming out for the DS for a while.

I have them both. I'm looking forward to playing games on both. but there's really no question that the PSP is ten times better than the DS.

I never heard anything about the PSP connecting XBox 360, which seems pretty worthless. WTF is up with that?

Of those games you've listed I'm only remoted interested Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which was only shown as a "concept trailer" at E3. Death Jr. seems like a decent game, but I have zero interest in GTA, the racing games, or SOCOM. I'll admit that GT4, GTA, and SOCOM will sell PSPs though.

It was part of the Microsoft E3 Press Conference. It was just a gimmick really. The point was that the Xbox360 will be able to use any usb device for storage (like the Xbox already does) The slide that they had up had the ipod and a psp on it as examples of other devices that would be able to "interact" with the xbox360. You can already use the PSP as a "memory card" for the Xbox. It's not like you'll be able to play multiplayer games across platforms or anything cool like that.

So, as I expected, useless.

I guess we'll be able to connect it to the Revolution too.

Useless? SO say you have a catlog of songs and movies on your PSP and head over to a friends house. YOu could watch the movies on his HDTV and listen to your music while playing games. I wouldn't call it useless.

Oh and just because the games don't peak your interest doesn't mean they aren't an impressive series of titles.

so what you're saying is that the GTA and Final Fantasy franchises are carrying the system?
I guess it really is just a ps2 then.

yes, a ps2 you can fit in your pocket and take anywhere with you. And the problem here is.....what exactly?

As far as the dead pixel thing, I know that of the 2 psps I've bought I have a grand total of 0 dead pixels. And the square button thing isn't an issue anymore. Sony fixed that problem on all the US psps.

I don't need a ps2 I can take anywhere. It's hard enough justifying having one sitting in my living room that only has 4 games worth owning, let alone one that costs twice as much and has a tiny screen.

^^It'd be much more easy to do that with an iPod. Transporting files via the PSP may be an advantage it has over the DS, but there are far easier and more convenient ways to do so.

Yes, but you can't play games on an IPod. There is always going to be something that does the job better than a multitasker. The whole point is that the PSP combines all those nifty entertainment features into one gadget.

Actually it does. kinda.

Supposedly a lot of the new PSP games are gonna support the new dolby 5.1 headphones standard. yeah yeah, I know it's not the same as real 5.1, but listen to some of the demos with a decent pair of headphones. It's pretty impressive.

I have two DSs, one I bought at launch and one Nintendo gave me. I can say my original has one dead pixel. So that is a problem on DS too. Sony should be sending me a PSP in the next couple weeks, so I'll see what I prefer then. Until then, I've had no interaction with one.

I think it's fucked up Sony won't give gaming stores units for demos. Nintendo gives them [DS] to everybody (even Target) so people can have hands-on interaction with the unit. It's good business practice to let the consumer interact with the product.

companies pay stores to display games and systems, and Sony will not pay these stores to display the PSP. It realizes the unit will sell itself through word of mouth. But there are smart gaming buyers -- most the people posting in this thread -- who want to touch and experience the product before $250 is blown.

Nintendo has an awesome collegiate program to market its systems and games to college students through collegiate publications. Sony fails to capitalize on this market, that's why I'm not getting a PSP until several months after its release. The PR at Sony is telling me that'll change in the next year though ... we'll see.

because college students is the prime market for video games. it's stupid not to focus your attention on the demographic that'll buy your product.
