the edges are vertical. the only time i can think of offhand when the face of the blade is facing up is when executing a sword salute, and then it's only for a couple of seconds. 8/8/2005 11:55:01 AM |

I wasn't necessarily talking about LEOs in my post. I was stating my opinion on when and how firearms should be used by me or another civilian. Obviously LEOs entering a potentially dangerous situation would possibly want their weapon out and at the ready. As a civilian, and again barring some kind of weird circumstance, we should have no reason to enter such a situation. 8/8/2005 3:05:13 PM |

I believe Opstand is correct, you pull a weapon on someone, you have to be prepared to use it. If you're not, then be prepared to face the consequences of your action. However, as someone who has been involved in a couple situations involving guns being pulled, most people use it as a show of force and aren't truly ready to use it. That is their mistake. 8/8/2005 3:47:01 PM |

only a knife? a man can cover ground and inflict injury faster with a drawn knife before an individual can process what is happening and react by drawing his weapon...take note that this is for an incident where the "bad guy" has the upper hand of surprise.
as for shooting to disable...there is no way an individual under stress has the accuracy to aim for and shoot such a small target. With major practice, a person MIGHT shoot at 50% of his best target shooting...and practice does NOT make perfect...only perfect practice makes perfect. oh, and shooting to injure or disable with a pistol or long gun...that's just dangerous anyway because of the liability issues of MISSING the target 8/9/2005 10:52:28 AM |

honestly I'm more scared of a stab or slicing wound then a gunshot! Eeh makes me shiver...
but on the flip side, I finally bought a knife...while small, at least it'll be a "last resort" if it comes to it. Lol plus it had to be small enough to fit in my pocket 8/9/2005 2:16:04 PM |

^yeah, usually after you cut someone the shock of seeing all that blood is enough to end a situation. Unless they're a baaaad motherfucker and then you have to get in close. 8/9/2005 9:57:19 PM |

For self defense you're better off with a $3 can of pepper spray.
*If you get in a fight with a knife, you will get cut. Even if it's your knife. *As you mentioned, most people are afraid of knives for purely psychological reasons. That doesn't mean they're very effective at stopping an attacker. Just stabbing blindly won't get the job done. *A knife big enough to be any count is likely illegal where you are. *Pepper spray sounds a hell of a lot better when you're talking to the police later. The whole idea behind it is to spray and run away, which is what you probably should be doing anyway.
Note that pepper spray doesn't always work on dogs. If they're already biting, pepper spray will just make them bite harder.

pepper spray, gun, knife, whatever, the best tools for self-defense are knowledge and training. and being prepared to use what you know to end a situation. on the shoot to stop or shoot to kill topic, ALWAYS shoot to kill, or use a knife or your hands. you want your adversary down and dead, and if that means putting an extra in their head to make sure thay're not going to get up and come back after you, then so be it. 8/9/2005 11:38:38 PM |

im not going to read all of that bullshit yall just posted, but the correct answer is
" shoot to live"
you shoot enough that you can get the hell away from or cause the threat to not be a threat( and you keep living) , if he dies, thats tough shit for him. 8/10/2005 11:44:40 AM |

In terms of knife fighting, make sure you have a peircing blade and aim to stab below the ribcage and upwards Also, hold the knife so that the wide part of the blade is horizontal to the ground, that way when you stab, if you fuck up slightly and hit in the lower ribs the blade wont get caught in the person's ribcage, thus allowing you to pull it out and use again if neccessary. 8/10/2005 11:50:03 AM |
