honeymoon I think - he had to wait until the session ended in order to go on the honeymoon, and so they lied and told him they would not bring it back again, and then after he was gone they did.

1 on a honeymoon, 1 to the hospital and then home confined to his bed. they're both cowards that didn't want to be on record voting against a lottery, which is just as shameful as Basnight and Rand (who's the far worse of the 2 IMO)

Mission Failed Accomplished!

It was a gamble that paid off, and one that I didn't think would happen until 2007 at the earliest.

Considering that there can't be any advertisement, this lottery will be the best-kept secret for a while, which is why I have mixed reaction to the bill being passed. If there is to be a lottery, DO NOT IN ANY WAY HALF-ASS IT. Just because it's an education lottery should not mean that there should be no advertisements. It's almost that the lawmakers wanted to lottery to fail before it even got off the ground.

As far as the anti-lottery coalition, I've waited three years to go after them. Time to dissect 'em:

Religious Right —These neo-puritanical neo-prohibitionists have really pissed me off to no end. If you don’t like the lottery, don’t play.

Religious Left —As far as all of these arguments that the lottery hurts the poor the most, it’s time to drop that argument once and for all. If the poor want to spend their money on Mega Millions or Power Ball, it’s their choice the same way a smoker kills him/herself by puffing away. This country is all about choices…deal with it.

Goo-Goos —I’m tired of this group looking to impose all kinds of bullshit on us because they think that we aren’t smart enough to look out for ourselves. If I want to waste my paychecks on lottery tickets, it’s my own fault for not realizing that the odds of becoming rich are extremely long.

Ga-Gas — Refer to my view on the Religious Left.

The Club — I have to wonder if any of these people have connections to poker machines. If so, they are a bunch of fucking hypocrites who don’t want any kind of competition.

The Liberty Lobby — Their anti-tax stance is getting tiring. If the money goes to the school, their argument completely goes to shit.

BTW, I'm in between the "Misguided" Libertarians and Libertines.

Stupid non-argument. Maybe they don't want their state government sponsoring immorality.

wow... a rare double wammy against conservatives... first off the immoral lottery gets passed, AND this means that the government is now providing another state-funded retirement plan for all the rednecks out there

it's harder to take away something people already had than it is to give the people something they do'nt have...

because, you know, prohibition proved SO successful when the Fed. tried it

gg agentlion....there's really no room for a morality argument when the state government runs our liquor stores.

only if "morality" excludes compassion for the poor, as many on teh L3ft bitterly complain about repeatedly when so many black neighborhoods spend so much $texas at ABC shops...

In my religion, there is nothing immoral about alcohol; as long as it is not used to excess. My old priest and I would have theological discussions over beer all the time. It is the same way with gambling - I enjoy a spin on the roulette wheel now and then (put everything on 4 and 19) too.

However, not everyone shares those views. And just because your state does one thing that is immoral in your view does not mean that the door is completely wide open for whatever sort of immorality they want to add next, like the hookers for high schools thing

Remember, we changed it to "Hookers for Higher Education," with it's companion program "Dope for Diplomas"

nah it's alright. You've got a point though, I'm inclined to change it to "Hoes for Higher Education" b/c "hooker" sounds too old-school...

i saw a column in the news and record the other day about it... Lemme see if I can find it...

fuck it, its 3 bux to get the damned thing from the N&R, and I aint payin that.

I seem to recall that 8% went to administrative costs and such, though. What, 50% to winnings? 35% to education, yes, but that money has priorities that have to be filled before you get down to the scholarships, such as the pre-k programs and reducing class size and such.

oh, 7% went to to paying merchants who sell lottery tickets.

If you want to legalize gambling, go ahead.

But we don't need the government to be our booky.

link is really log. i'll pm it.

its the third one down "Lottery Paypack? Thats a Gamble"
It gives the breakdown, but the purpose of the column was NOT to explain the lottery... its rather anti-lottery, so, just know that thats what it is
