Probably a cig was dropped that caused the fire and those two guys, once the blood test come in, will probably be determined to be drunk at the time. Alot harder to get out when you are drunk.

isnt that the way it usually goes?

"Victims known as smart, dedicated
Family, friends mourn students

By SUE STOCK, Staff Writer

As Saturday dawned, the fire that killed two N.C. State University students had been extinguished, but the smell of smoke lingered on the air. For friends and family of Mark Brandon Davis and Dylan Cody Pilkington, reality had just started to sink in.
"It just kills me to know that he couldn't get out, because he was so big and unstoppable," said Davis' former girlfriend Vicki Herbert, 21.

Davis and Pilkington were members of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. The were killed early Friday when a fire tore through the Raleigh duplex where they and six other fraternity members lived.

A third student was injured jumping from a second-floor window.

Davis, 22, would have graduated in December with a degree in materials science and engineering. His 6-foot frame and wide build earned the High Point native the nickname "Moose."

Friends and co-workers described him as energetic, smart and sincere.

"He was, in my mind, one of the best mechanically sound undergraduates in our lab," said Christopher Oldham, a doctoral student who worked with Davis. "He was just so good with his hands and thinking through how things worked."

Davis was naturally curious, said Dick Guarnieri, research professor in Davis' lab.

"When a job was done, rather than just wait to be told to do something," he said, "he would always push and take on something that was beyond his capability so that he could learn."

Davis planned to apply to graduate school, said professor Jerry Cuomo, who both advised Davis academically and employed him in his lab for two years.

"He wanted to learn more science," Cuomo said. "If you watch, you can see students grow from the seed to a bud and then to a flower, and he was in the flowering stage right now."

Cuomo recalled the day this past summer when Davis told him he planned to apply to graduate school.

"One day, he came into my office, and he said, 'You finally convinced me.' I asked him where he wanted to go, and he said, 'Here. I want you to be my mentor.' "

Pilkington, 19, was a junior volunteer firefighter and a Boy Scout.

He grew up in Grifton and was a sophomore mechanical engineering major at N.C. State.

"Cody was a very intelligent guy," said the Rev. David Cox, pastor at Pilkington's church, First Christian Church of Grifton. "But he was also a fun guy. He wasn't the kind that has difficulty blending with groups and all."

Before heading to college, he attended Ayden-Grifton High School in Grifton and later the N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham.

His volunteer spirit and work ethic should become his legacy, said Cox, who baptized Pilkington and his brother when they were infants.

"He wasn't perfect, but few of us are," Cox said. "If other students can learn about him, emulate his life, maybe that's the good of this bad situation."

I was in the basement on the side that the fire broke out on, all I can say is this has truly been the worst ordeal any of us have ever faced, it's not easy to say goodbye to two of your best friends. Regardless, please do your best to keep all of us in your prayers...

Actually, its the rent for frat court that forced them off. Two other chapters have had to go off campus because they could not afford it. You need to have every room at capacity and you will still pay more per person than a dorm or apartment. Good luck getting your entire chapter to live in house

you cant just jump out a window if you are asleep and you wake up suffocating...

the people speculating about "wonder if they were drunk" are being completely ridiculous.

ive gone to bed after drinking about a thousand times, and not once did i wake up dying of asphyxiation. Im willing to bet you havent either.

"Burning Cigarette Cause Of Fatal N.C. State House Fire, Officials Say

POSTED: 8:56 am EDT October 25, 2005
UPDATED: 11:09 pm EDT October 25, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Raleigh fire investigators said Tuesday that a smoldering cigarette was to blame for a fatal house fire that killed two fraternity members at North Carolina State University earlier this month.

Mark Brandon Davis of Raleigh, a senior majoring in materials science engineering, and Dylan Pilkington of Grifton, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, died Oct. 7 at a duplex on Groveland Avenue, which is just off Oberlin Road. Both were members of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity.

The night before the fire, investigators said there had been a small gathering in the lower floor of the house, a game room, where eight fraternity members had been watching an N.C. State football game. Authorities believe that someone had left the cigarette burning.

Investigators said the victims likely died from smoke inhalation while trying to escape the duplex. A third fraternity brother, Jason Pfister, of Greensboro, was able to jump from a second-floor window. He suffered broken bones."

Hopefuly someting good will come out of this and make people think about fire safety. If your alarm chips put a new battery in it don't disconect it. Carefuly put out cigs esp when throwing them into yards. A fire started on brent rd several years ago b/c a cig was thown into pine straw. be safe.....

"Fire caused by lit cigarette

By MATTHEW EISLEY, Staff Writer

A lit cigarette left on a cloth sofa apparently started a fraternity apartment fire that killed two N.C. State University students and injured a third earlier this month, Raleigh fire officials say.
The fire smoldered for a couple of hours, producing dark, lethal smoke before erupting in the game room of an off-campus duplex off Oberlin Road near NCSU’s Bell Tower, Raleigh Fire Marshal Larry Stanford said Tuesday afternoon.

“You wonder why,” Stanford said. “Why, why, why. This could have been avoided. But it’s hard to eliminate the human element.”

The early-morning fire Oct. 7 killed Cody Pilkington, 19, of Grifton, and Brandon “Moose” Davis, 22, of High Point. The third student, Jason Pfister of Greensboro, is recovering from an injury he sustained when he jumped from a second-story window.

Investigators couldn't determine who left the cigarette behind, Stanford said. There will be no criminal charges, he said."

of course they dont know who left it behind, hell it was just as likely it was brandons (i dunno if corey smoked, since i didnt know him) fucking cigarette that wasnt all the way out

As many of you have heard, Cody Pilkington ’04 died in
a fire this month. We are planning a memorial service
for him here at NCSSM, planting a tree that can be
seen from his senior dorm room and sharing our
memories of his exuberant personality with his family
and friends. Since he was away from his family for two
years while at NCSSM, his family indicated that they
would appreciate seeing photos and stories of Cody’s
life at NCSSM.

If you have photos of Cody or stories about Cody,
would you send them to me? I will compile them in an
appropriate format and give them to his family at the
service.

Thank you,
