I've pretty much used every form of mp3 player out there and I've got to say that the slick form factor of the Ipod and its ease of use trumps all other mp3 players at this time. In fact, I'd like to know what alternative devices to the IpodIncognegro would recommend.

To clarify, I use an mp3 player because I can hook it up to the Aux in I wired in my car as well as when I work out, go to work, study in the library etc. I use my device(Iriver) all the time.

I use my music player solely in my car.

It has no use once I am out and about.

There's only one way to settle this.

let's load the same music on all kinds of music players

and then see who can switch between artists/tracks/albums while driving in the shortest time possible.

Well I've used a bunch of products and only the Ipod has been intuitive. I bought an Iriver for Napster, not because I liked the thing.

SandSanta- Personally, I just use my laptop for mp3s. My bookbag has a padded pouch for a laptop, and I have a power inverter in the car. I have a USB controller I'm using in the car presently for audio control, analog sticks set for volume and fast forward/rewind, buttons also assigned for random/repeat, forward/back, play, pause, stop. Battery life is a bit of a restriction in the bookbag, but only playing mp3s in standby mode it still gets 3 hours minimum. Although, honestly, I never left in standby mode for more than the few minutes between classes, and usually gave it some plug-in time in or between classes. As an added bonus, I can play 1080p content at full resolution on the 15.4 inch screen. Which is to say, within the parameters of my "lifestyle", the performance is vastly superior and the additional cost of repurposing the hardware boils down to the cost of the inverter and controller... both of which, incidentially, were free to me.

While I understand you had no interest in my (or any) solution and rather intended to corner me in the debate, I'd also like to point out that the previous pages are filled with the solutions of those who have not chosen to take advantage of synergies in their existing inventory.

not true. the previous pages are filled with fancier devices that are aimed at doing a variety of things. none of which interest me, nor am i allowed to use.

the only comperable device listed has been the iRiver, which some people have already pointed out that they do not necessarily like.

i didnt buy an iPod because its an iPod...i bought it because its the best for what i need.

What I'm wondering is why you're allowed to use an iPod, when one of its only real features in my eyes is the semi-mature compatibility with Linux, therein allowing you to smuggle all of the "secure" data you want out on an encrypted partition, or even watermarked on your "mp3s"? I think there's something you're not telling us about your secure environment, to bolster your support of the iPod, personally.

[Edited on October 24, 2005 at 3:04 PM. Reason : and note that all of those "fancier" devices are also less than the eBay price of a comparable iPod]

they have restrictions on the computers where we can't hook up anything external to it. its a pain in the ass...i cant even use a USB key without special permissions.

so theres no way for me to get the info on my iPod.

any other questions?

i never said i couldnt use any other mp3 player...i just said that all the ones that were recommended in this thread i would not be able to use.

i shopped around when i bought mine (about 1.5 years a go), and i prefered iPod to the other ones.

i dont know if it would be same way now, as im not familiar with a lot of the newer devices. im just merely pointing out that im very happy with it so far...which for some reason, pisses you off.

PS, you could always put the secure data, modulated, on line-out, and then demodulate it on the iPod Linux side and watermark your mp3s with it...

I used to do that as well but I couldn't carry a laptop to the Gym and thats why I got an Iriver. I also like to go out and walk around during good weather and carrying a laptop during those excursions just for music is very impractical. Even in a car, a laptop is extreme over kill for playing only music. No matter how you have your system configured, you will never beat the ease of me just plugging my aux-in to my iriver and clicking "unpause." This, for those of you wondering, is why people buy portable mp3 players.

The previous page is filled with worthless bickering and geeky personal preferences that wouldn't be practical for anyone with an active lifestyle. I've used laptops, mp3 players, minidisc players, cd mp3 players and even mp3 phones and of all those products nothing has come close to the ease of use the ipod/itunes combo presents. This, coupled with very slick form factor, is why the ipod is the best selling consumer music device and every point you and others have made against the ipod smacks of wannabe counterculture.

I'll allow that 1.5 years ago the iPod looked a lot better.

SandSanta- I can come as close to that ease of use as it matters, and intend to: USB sound card, USB controller connected to a USB hub (my stereo mini-jack port is getting kind of worn and requires some jiggling action to get both channels), but also: 2 cable (power, hub) convenience. Script xmms start-up on the sound card being detected, and there you go.

what the fuck is wrong with you people who call each other idiots over things like this? jesus christ, people like you make me glad i'm out of college. how god damn immature can you be?

mine, personally, has never broken. However, I'd venture to say half of the people whose ipods broke are responsible with electronics and usuallly make fun of me because i have really really bad luck with them. with ipods, it's the opposite. Mine's held up since 2003, but theirs have broken. the infamous battery issue (after the warranty was expired), fried hard drives, dead screens...

and what i mean by drag and drop tracks is that in WMP, you can click and drag (or group of tracks), or an album, a track onto an artist's name in your library, and all of those tracks will have their artist tag changed to that artist. same with dragging tracks to albums, etc. it's really useful

Shit like mp3tag is where it's at. Matches unsorted mp3s with CDDB/FreeDB albums, then substitutes the CDDB/FreeDB track/name/artist/album/genre/blah parameters into a format string of your specification. Sorted a few thousand mp3s in about an hour last time I got bored enough to. Mindnumbing simplicity after that initial configuration.

and hey neat, there are FreeDB bindings for Perl now... you won't have to worry about iTunes binding for any language any time soon, though... well, you will have to worry actually, the creators will probably get sued into bankruptcy. Shit sure gets simple when you rule out flexibility and innovation as factors.

I'm sorry, this thread is supposed to be moving away from gay ass marketing, and I think that application's name is guilty

Here's a hint I've been trying to make for a long time. Every feature you think is unique to the iPod is in fact a simple integration of existing technologies. You can achieve every feature (save for user-proofing and miniaturization) yourself, for cheaper, with off-the-shelf components. You don't even have to break out a soldering iron, most of the shit is USB. Including "one cable" convenience-- how about no-cable convenience for you only-in-the-car kids? Ever think about an XPC in the trunk? Or a true hard disk MP3 head-unit? There's a website out there where some dude built a hard disk mp3 computer in a head-unit form factor for about the price of some of those beefier iPods that are fully justified in their cost. No, really, every penny was worth it.

Also, I dunno about you, but I prefer to change tracks when I can look at both the road and the screen at the same time...meaning hold it close to the windshield.

lol...meaning i don't have to reach for the mp3 player, juggle it in my hand while 'holding it in front of me' and trying to steer at the same time. I can just (without looking) reach for the next track button on the deck with BOTH eyes still on the road. Can you do that? no cause you are too busy trying to figure out where the next button is.

and plus you're indian. no respect for u at all.

are you a fucking retard? Thats one of the best uses of an mp3 player is using it with your car stereo. Who needs to fuck with CD's and shit when you can have all your songs on one unit playing through your car speakers.

well, part of the portability factor is being able to use the same device where ever you go. the same device i use at work, i can use at the gym, i can use at home, i can use in the car. thats why a portable mp3 player is perfect for me.

Golov- You realize that pretty much everyone in this thread has a grudge with everyone else, and YOU are the only genius who has had to resort to calling people "moron" and "idiot" as their primary mode of argument? The features you seek are available in countless combinations of devices. The fact is that in your position as a consumer, you do not have the familiarity necessary to recognize the combinations of hardware that could meet your needs, much less estimate a cost of implementation. Much less, apparently, understand when it is explicitly and without uncertainty detailed that you overpaid for your desired feature-set. Until such time as you are not wholly ignorant of the technologies operating to animate your chosen "lifestyle," you might want to take the towel off of your head and bite down on it a bit.

VoiceLibReg has a pockettunes plugin for voice recog.

no training required for "Next Track" "Next Playlist" "last track" "repeat on" "shuffle"

all kinds of shit.

If you have time, you can train it to recognize individual songs.
