he threw one downfield pass on saturday and he was 0-1 with one interception
and why does it matter if he plays this year...hes not going to start nxt year..not if brent schaffer(sp?) maybe coming and if he comes stone is giong to move down to 3rd string behind justin burke and brent. So who cares who starts at QB as long as we get more W's.

Stone might start next year. Hell, Jay Davis was terrible down the stretch last year, but that didn't stop Amato from handing him the starting gig before spring training this year. 11/1/2005 9:02:51 PM |

This is the number one reason Jay has not performed. So much pressure has been put on him not only replacing Rivers, but satisfying fans.

Haha, I said that about 2 weeks ago and nobody caught it. Started his freshman and soph. years then quit to play bball. He would be awful good to run the option at 6-5 and blazing fast. Better than what we got for sure.11/1/2005 9:08:10 PM |

the pressure has been there even before the first game of last season
the fan's have created the situation we are currently in, in my opinion
for some reason a great majority of people wanted Stone to play even before Richmond
when Jay doesn't show to be just like Rivers, the fans scream for Stone because they want Rivers...they already know Jay isn't Rivers, but for some reason they whole-heartedly hope and assume that Stone is Rivers and that Stone should be put in
Among many things, I believe fan support is directly related to Jay's performance
The fans never gave him a chance to play well11/1/2005 9:20:53 PM |

Burke might suck worse than Stone. Or he might not come here at all.
Shaeffer is a pipe dream at this point.
The fact is that Stone could easily be the starter next year. All your wistful thinking won't change that, so you might as well get used to it and let the wigger get some experience this year. 11/1/2005 9:25:02 PM |

^^Do you remember Brock Berlin from Miami? He had the same situation the year after miami lost the NC to OSU. When you follow a great QB, the fans will be on you no matter what. And what did he do? He was arguably the best QB in the league last year.
Funny thing is, he might be dumber than Stone. Jay had his chance, let it go. The fans have nothing to do with how a QB performs.

3) Jay Davis is not a quarterback. Its that simple. He has no field presence, no confidence, and no gumption to stay in the pocket and throw a pass. Instead he runs away like a girl and doesn't even bother looking downfield cause he's scared if getting hit.

Fans want wins. Period. Jay doesn't perform. Remember the ?Clemson? game late last season where he threw 5 INTs? Fans see he doesn't perform, they want to see someone else. Anyone else. When Stone doesn't perform you will see the same. Fans, who want to see their team win, will want to see someone other than Stone get a look when it becomes obvious that he is not the solution for the team.
Quote : | "Among many things, I believe fan support is directly related to Jay's performance" |
How about fan performance a result of Jay's support. That I'd buy.
Quote : | "The fans never gave him a chance to play well" |

Quote : | "if i can't say Stone sucks after 1 whole game

And there we have it. Yet you do.
Look now we know that the whole reason you abandon logic and common sense is because you want to be the first on the block to say "told ya so" when everyone starts to want to get rid of Stone due to a lack in performance. News flash. Everyone expects this. No one likes Stone because he has proven himself, it is just that people don't like Davis because he has proven himself. If you don't like Stone then by all means help Amato out and go to Florida to scout for some recruits because we need somebody, anybody other than Davis.
Troll fed.

Quote : | "Pack's trust in Stone repaid, but barely
Pack quarterback Marcus Stone struggles much of the day, but he finds Brian Clark when it counts in the fourth quarter. Staff Photo by Ethan Hyman
By NED BARNETT, Staff Writer
RALEIGH -- Marcus Stone walked out for his postgame interview wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with N.C. State's theme of the season: "Trust." In his first start Saturday, Stone tested the trust of his teammates and coaches, but in the end he rewarded it with a go-ahead touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and a badly needed 21-17 win over Southern Miss.
State turned to the broad-shouldered, 6-foot-4 Stone for a spark and nearly got electrocuted. His first completed pass ended in a fumble. His next was was an interception. Then he threw another. By halftime, the redshirt sophomore was 1-for-7 with two interceptions and a meager 15 yards passing.
That's when trust became more than a slogan. Coach Chuck Amato resisted turning back to former starter Jay Davis and told Stone to relax and let his body take over the job.
A body did, but it wasn't Stone's. It was freshman Andre Brown, who almost caught Ted Brown's single-game rushing record at State by running like Jim Brown.
"Great players took over," Stone said of the second half. "I gave [Brown] the ball, and he made things happen. The offensive line made huge holes to run through. It made it easy for me, and I calmed down."
Eddie Willingham, Southern Miss' redshirt freshman defensive back, also made it easy.
On third-and-goal with State trailing 17-14 and 5:13 left in the game, Stone dropped back on the biggest play of his life and saw Willingham slip and fall down. Stone tossed the ball to a wide-open Brian Clark in the corner of the end zone.
"I just dropped back, and when I looked over my shoulder, I saw the cornerback fall. Right then, I knew where I was going, and Brian just made a great catch."
Stone added, "It was like playing catch in the back yard."
Back yard was an apt image for two reasons. The Pack finally cashed in on a homefield advantage, picking up its first win over a Division I-A opponent since a win over Wake Forest on Oct 2, 2004.
The game also had backyard flavor when State was on defense. It looked like a neighborhood match between the big kids and the little kids.
State's real big kid -- 6-foot-7, 290-pound Mario Williams -- swarmed into Southern Miss' backfield at will. The rest of the defensive line wasn't far behind.
"They were blocking well," he said, being as generous after the game as he was menacing during it. "But we were told to just dominate the line of scrimmage and take over the game."
That they did.
The first game of the Stone era ended with trust rewarded, but still required. Stone pulled out a win largely because the defensive line was too strong and USM couldn't wrap up Brown.
It was good for a win, but it leaves open the question about whether State has fixed what has made its offense sputter.
The Golden Eagles clearly were not at a level of competition State typically faces. Brown will not run wild against Florida State next week, or Boston College or Maryland. And better teams will figure out how to offset State's hard defensive rush, as State saw in losing four of its first five ACC games.
State also got help when USM pushed to State's 7-yard line in the fourth quarter only to have a touchdown reception dropped. The Eagles squandered their last chance when redshirt junior Jasper Faulk fumbled a punt and State recovered with 2:32 to go.
After the penalties and turnovers of this season, State no doubt felt entitled to a change in luck. They got it with a change in quarterback -- and running back.
The way the Pack stood behind Stone impressed one player who thought his team had State beaten.
"One thing I can say is they never gave up, even though we were up 14 to zero." said senior defensive back John Eubanks, who intercepted Stone at the end of the first quarter. "[State] is a good team. Their record in misleading."
When the Pack's new leader who wears trust on his chest turned to leave after his interviews, he revealed a smaller message on the back of his shirt.
It read: "Finish."
The next few weeks will make clear whether Stone can live up to that motto, too.

having expectations isn't the problem
having ridiculously high expectations and setting yourself up for hard falls is the problem
and when you fall hard, you fall into denial and totally blame other people instead of distributing the blame
being the figure head and leader of the team, everyone blames Jay more than they blame everyone else, even though Jay's contributions of the team are dependent upon the performance of the team around him
rally around Stone all you want, but he'll be terrible on Saturday

That's b/c Stone shouldn't have been given the chance this season. It's Davis' place to be the quarterback of the team. Stone is not better and therefore shouldn't have replaced him. The only reason Stone is starting is to create a better perception of the team, not to actually aid the team.

You're assuming Stone will be the starter next season
that's a mighty big assumption
and not a good enough reason for me
if Stone were better than Davis, then I wouldn't be so adamant
but i'll just say this, if Stone helps to keep the FSU game close, if he actually positively contributes (ie does more than handing the ball off), and we win or lose by less than 10 points, then i'll go easier on him
if he completely screws up and we lose by at least 17 and he contributes negatively (ie turnovers from him that result in points by FSU) then i guess i'll still be entertained by the mockery this team has become 11/3/2005 11:05:36 PM |

Dude, stop, seriously. Its also a mighty big assumption that Burke will be the starter next year. I mean fuck, he hasn't even signed yet...I wouldn't be surprised if he backed out.
If Stone doesn't play this year, its the same mother fucking thing we had when Rivers left...a QB with no game experience. That sure fucking worked out great, didn't it?
I still dont understand the hard on you have for Jay Davis. I realize that both of them suck. I realize that Stone is not the man for the job. But if we are going to lose, which we will, why do you want Stone on the bench, when he is by far the most likely person to start for us next year? You can say "he wont be the starter" until your face turns blue, but thats HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING. Explain to me what we can gain this year by starting Jay Davis. Explain to me why you want us to have an inexperienced QB playing next year. Explain to me why you have to be such a dick about this. Its not that hard to understand...Davis had his chance, MOVE ON. 11/3/2005 11:19:16 PM |
