i'll say this- they did a good job of giving you just enough visual gore, and knew when to stop it (just before most people reached their limit for watching it without getting sick). they worked a lot on sounds and suggestions, which actually had a very good effect.

i love blood 'n' guts stuff, but this was meant to make you associate with the pain, and it succeeded.

it's not a brilliant movie. it's not superiorly thought-provoking. but it kept me entertained. and after i listened to a couple of people bitch about how they didn't like the movie because of what it did, i said "hey, you just spent your money feeding your own sick morbid facination of what you are now labeling as horrible."

well, tarantino didn't direct this. i believe he only produced it.

but there IS a scene where "pulp fiction" is playing, dubbed in slovakian, in the background. the voices don't fit the actors at all. and all 5 people in my group started laughing.

no one else in the theater laughed.

idiots.

i read this thread before i saw the movie, and therefore went in with bad expectations. i was glad i did, because i was pleasantly surprised by it. i thought it was pretty funny at parts, and although the acting and story wasn't incredible, i was very entertained and freaked out by some of the gore.

overall, i recommend it

Variety reports that Sony Screen Gems & Lionsgate have commissioned Eli Roth for a "Hostel" sequel after the successful box office showing last weekend for the first movie.

The studios are hoping for a quick turnaround to release the movie next year.

I was thinking about it this evening. You know how theater workers are supposed to say "enjoy your movie..." It's just morally wrong to hope somebody enjoys that movie. "I hope you're so fucked up in the head that this gore flick with be fun and entertaining for you. I also hope you don't live next door to me."

Edit: The only way I could possibly enjoy it is as a work of art. I haven't seen it, but I've heard enough to know I don't want to.

You guys said that this movie was pretty tame? Is that because some stuff had to be edited out just so that it could make the R or NC-17 rating?

Maybe when the DVD comes out, you can see every last thing. Maybe it will be a lot more fucked up then.

I have yet to see this movie, though. And from the sounds of things, maybe I will wait for the DVD.

This is an outright lie, or at least, he is being broad with the definition of torture and is specifically not defining levels of tortue such that he is allowed to make the claim.

if they actually showed it maybe i would have cringed. instead they just flashed to shots of weapons and you heard a bunch of screaming. LAME.

well they did show the drill in the leg for a second, and you saw his ankles come apart, but otherwise it wasn't that bad. the best part was those fuckers getting run over

I specifically thought of this scene when I made my comment, and honestly, the CGI + sound wasnt real enough to affect me. These Hostel scenes were much more impactful to me.

i have got to hand it to Eli Roth. The man knows how to make a horror film.

After Cabin Fever, i had expectations of him (gratuitous nudity, sound effects, gore) and all my expectations were met with this movie, although i had heard something about a chainsaw duel so i'm dissappointed that turned out to be a rumor.

the dripping sounds and visuals combined with the whistling leading up to the realization of what is dripping (if you hadn't already guessed) and visual of the teeth in a puddle of blood made for a great opening scene as well edited and great overall as the opening credits in se7en (john doe making his diary w/ NIN "closer" soundtrack).

i must have seen a completely different "saw" as some of these people. hostel was much more gory than the "saw" i remember.

i'm curious as to what (if any) role roth's jewish heritage played in the making of this movie. i think this hits very close to home as the basic theme for the movie:

Quote :
"also, i read some interviews by eli roth and quentin that made me appreciate it a lot more. u could figure it out on your own too, but its commentary on exploitation and objectification of humans adds a lot. thus the plethora of breasteses.nothing extremely profound, but excellent for a horror/thriller."

but watching some of the torture scenes i was reminded of what i've read/heard/learned about human experimentation in the holocaust. i haven't decided whether i think thats just coincidence or not. i look forward to the commentary and interviews on the hostel DVD and hopefully the subject will be broached there or in other interviews. the commentaries on Cabin Fever were very entertaining and made me appreciate it much more.

overall, if you're a horror fan (theres an "American Werewolf in London" feel to this movie at the beginning) you will like this movie, and if you liked "Eurotrip" and appreciate satire you might like this movie. and if you liked cabin fever you will definitely like this movie.

i neglected to mention in my previous post that eli roth does a great job of including subtle references to classic horror movies. well not even references. he's able to recreate in some scenes the same aura that encapsulates particular great horror movies. like i said earlier "american werewolf in london" and "texas chainsaw massacre" come to mind. he did the same in "cabin fever" and included some friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, and phantasm references.

damn now i want to see it again.

its seemed like they tried to mock eurotrip in a similar yet opposite way scary movie mocks movies. they made it more serious.

I saw the unrated version and i dont see how anyone can call it tame. what movies do you guys who called that tame think are gory? the gore in saw is like the gore in narnia compared to hostel.

i loled at the pus coming out of the eye. that was random, non realistic and comical.
