^^ some is contained in all is basically saying that if I believe some of what's being said, and it's wrong, then since you believe all of it means you're even worse. Which makes this argument kinda useless, since you don't want to be worse." |
And what I believed suddenly became relevant to this thread...when again?
IIRC the line of discussion was about how you think Jesus was "mostly right" but misquoted. So which parts are misquotes? Specific books? Specific chapters? Specific verses? Or only the parts you don't like?
And anyone arrogant enough to attack any given religion while cherry-picking their own a la carte probably shouldn't post in a thread "[that] means you're even worse"

secular existentialists base their actions on the assumption that life is *all* we have and therefore it doesn't matter one shit what we do
they also despise humanists

Quote : | "Hi. You're probably new to the Wolf Web. In fact, I'm willing to bet you're new to college in general. It's an exciting time, isn't it? I'm sure that you have been exposed to many ideas and perspectives you'd never realized existed, and you're just bursting with enthusiasm at the thought of sharing a few ideas of your own with your peers now that you find yourself in an academic environment that seems perfectly suited to such an exchange.
Why don't we go a little further? Odds are you consider yourself very intelligent. In fact, you're probably so intelligent that you've figured out all the quirks and kinks of organized religion--or at least Christianity. Yeah, that's it, isn't it? You were probably raised in a Christian household and resent that upbringing for limiting your personal freedoms, so it's only natural that you'd seek to undermine Christ's teachings and save others from having such a faulty belief system for their own good. Pretty cool of you, isn't it? You've really got it together.
FUCK YOU YOU STUPID FUCKING FAGGOT COLLEGE KID
LET ME TELL YOU A SECRET
NONE OF YOUR THOUGHTS ON RELIGION ARE RADICAL OR EVEN THOUGHT-PROVOKING
IT'S NO SECRET YOU GOT THEM OFF A FUCKING WEBSITE

BECAUSE MAYBE YOU'RE TOO MUCH OF A PUSSY
TO LIVE ACCORDING TO A STRICT MORAL CODE
AND MAYBE YOU'RE TOO MUCH OF A PUSSY
TO ACTUALLY TRY AND DEVELOP A STRONG, HONORABLE CHARACTER
BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT
FOR YOU TO ATTACK MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF PEOPLE
NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TRY TO PLAY THE VICTIM
TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY "FORCE THEIR BELIEFS" ON YOU
BY HANDING OUT A FUCKING PAMPHLET
I MEAN HOLY FUCKING CHRIST
WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO IS TEN TIMES WORSE

Atheism, in my view, is dumb. It's just as much based on faith as religion, but to no purpose or greater end. Agnosticism is a sensible view, but not atheism.12/23/2005 11:35:12 AM |

wrong. you can easily believe something you read somewhere. You do it all the time. you just choose not to believe some of the stuff you believe in the Bible. Its not hard at all to pick up the Bible, read a sentence, and believe it. You just do it. But, if you don't want to believe it, then it makes arriving at the actual belief much harder, but having the actual belief itself is still pretty damned easy.
In fact, its so easy that you actually believe that what you just read is wrong. Ultimately, you have created a belief right then and there which is quite analagous the belief that you say you can't create. The only difference is that the former belief is the logical opposite of the latter, namely the former is "I believe this is right," while the latter is "i believe this is not right."
Thus, in all honesty, you aren't faith deficient. you are faith avoidant. not to come down hard on you, but I just hate it when someone says "its hard for me to believe," because thats bullshit. Like I said, they just don't want to believe12/23/2005 11:47:18 AM |

yes, duh. however, agnosticism is not a practicable mindset. it is better to live one's life as an atheist while always ready to acknowledge the indeterminability of the supernatural.
otherwise, if you try to live life as an agnostic you will be either (A) wasting your time on futile search for the truth, or (B) if you do not constantly search, you will be lying to yourself because that is the life of an atheist.
just admit that there's no way to know, move on, and live your life as though you were atheist.12/23/2005 3:13:24 PM |

Ok, I didn't read every post, but some of you christians are way too defensive. Why can't you have an intelligent conversation without name calling? It's pretty silly of you to try and put down others. you sinners 12/23/2005 9:18:33 PM |

the dude titled the thread "For God so hated the world..." and you want me to just treat it like an "intelligent conversation"
fuck that
this kid knew exactly what he was doing when he started this thread
this thread was never about intelligent discussion or debate
it was a "look how enlightened i am" that fucking backfired in his face seriously, someone go through and count how many times he flip-flops from agnostic to believer to atheist and back again
way too defensive? more like tired of the same shit every fucking week
how many people in the soap box come in here touting how great Christianity is? how often do we see a thread where someone disputes there IS a God? the shit almost entirely flows from the "enlightened" atheists/humanists to those of us who do Believe...
lemme borrow a quote here:

I read the first post... not too much after that. Here's my partially educated response on this thread (the original post):
I agree with your perspective. Not that I agree with you, but based on what you've seen, I'd probably have the same questions about God. You should know that there is a growing movement of Christian activists, both for human and environmental rights. http://www.sojo.net <--for instance.
I'm glad that you recognized that not all Christians are self-consumed. That's a really wise statement considering your opinion and it's much appreciated. Just to clear up some terminology for your argument. Its actually based on two religious orientations: extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. Those who are extrinsically motivated by religion are motivated by factors that are self-consumed. So these people live on earth for themselves. People intrinsically motivated by their religion act upon internal motivations that usually stem from their god. Not necessarily to please God, but because I love Him, I am motivated to do things He would have me do (i.e. help feed those who are hungry). Note: These religious orientations aren't only affiliated with Christianity, but with all religions.
I'd encourage you to seek out more Christians who are intrinsically motivated. See what they're doing in the world. It's pretty amazing. They're more than just 'nice.' 12/24/2005 11:01:22 AM |

that's the type of christian i particularly hate ... we all know the type, fucking fake ass bastards - so fake they've fooled themselves
i'd far prefer someone who cared about me BECAUSE THEY CARED ABOUT ME over some dickhead christian who's only nice because of the love of jesus etc. etc.
that's really about the most insulting thing you can tell a person, what you just said.12/24/2005 11:09:00 AM |

It probably seems insulting because you don't understand. I do love people. That's how I'm wired. Becoming a Christian when I was 17 changed my worldview from being self-consumed to others consumed... because I love Him. 12/24/2005 2:05:02 PM |

eh, I think its ok to not really know everything you believe and still want to discuss it. The rest of us are just lying if we post in here, act like we've got it all figured out, and pretend we'll never change our opinions or beliefs. 12/25/2005 10:07:25 AM |
