i really cannot believe everyone is picking the bears. i mean EVERYONE, except of course panthers fans. its like that pretty defense is gonna immaculately conceive joe montana to lead the offense and brian urlacher will transform into jerry rice. give me a break

I will admit that the Bears depend on their defense more than other teams. The panthers have a solid offense and defense but they played so up and down this season you cant perdict what team will come out and play on Sunday. At least you know that the Bears will come out with force on defense.

Coming off of 2 straight dominating defensive performances on the road? Check
Revenge factor from the previous matchup? Check
Just a couple of counterpoints. Jake has played well in these circumstances before. If the line can give him time to throw, I have no doubt that Delhomme will continue his stellar play in the postseason. Green Bay beat up on that defense in week 16 with quick, short passes. Driver, Fisher and the TE's must have broken 50 tackles in that game. If the Panthers can get the ball to Foster in the flat, he will break loose with his spins and cuts. Same goes for Smith.

I'm not looking for Foster to really do anything at all.
If we win we're gonna need a stellar defensive effort.
They are gonna have to force some turnovers and give us a chance in the field position battle.
Then we've simply GOT to make some plays in the passing game...
It's gonna be really tough, but we're lucky because the field & weather conditions are to our advantage because its been warm across the country all week. 1/13/2006 2:02:34 AM |

Another 100+ yards from Smith accompanied by great defense as usual.. AND anything resembling Foster's recent games on the ground and I seriously believe the Panthers will win with ease. When you don't have to fear or respect a run game at all you can pressure the QB all day.. and if they try to do that like last game I hope Foster runs all over the field with his bad toe and all.
If the Panthers come out looking one dimensional.. going to Smith 90% of the time.. running for 50 yards.. Jake is going to be pressured non-stop and make mistakes and it will be another field-goal festival with interceptions/fumbles/total screwups from both QBs telling the tale.
My prediction is Panthers 17, Bears 10 1/13/2006 6:27:52 AM |

thats the thing about the bears
they dont pressure the quarterback in the traditional sense...a lot of their pressure comes from the front four, and the linebackers are quick as hell in run protection. clearly foster has a better chance at succeeding than davis did, but dont expect him to just prance around like he did against the giants.
turnovers will decide this game undoubtedly 1/13/2006 8:24:18 AM |

statistically the panthers' defense is better than the bears' defense now so dont come with that shit...acting like the panthers defense is garbage and the bears have never allowed a point ever
and people act like rex grossman is gonna come in and throw 40 passes like he's some kind of superstar
look at john fox's record against teams he lost to in the regular season and then played in the playoffs...and he's 21-7 against the spread as the underdog
We also just held the Falcons and Giants to season low yardages
also since the Bears beat the Panthers, the Bears' defense has allowed an additional 66 yards per game and their total team has been outgained in yardage in every single game] 1/13/2006 1:55:00 PM |

What few seem to consider is the possibility that the Bears could have a poor defensive day. If that happens they have no chance. The Panthers have the better offense by far and a very good defense. Chicago has to play great D or they get blown out. 1/13/2006 3:25:50 PM |

Panthers have a lot of momentum going into this one after shutting out a prolific Giants offense. I think the Bears might be a little over confident about this one seeing as how they "owned" them the first time. John Fox is a good coach and he will make adjustments to the pass protection that forced Jake into bad throws early last time and gave the Bears the winning TD. Foster will not run for many yards. Thomas Davis will not run for many yards. With no running game on either side, I think Grossman will end up making more mistakes than Delhomme. Delhomme has playoff experience and has seen the what the Bears D can bring earlier this season, he will be prepared. Grossman has only played 1.5 games and the Panthers D will be able to take advantage of it. Steve Smith had 169 yards (or something along those lines) last game. Granted those may be taken as "fluff" yards, but all it takes is one juke by that guy to break this low scoring game wide open. Time to turn the tables...

we're going to put thomas davis at running back? not a bold prediction to say he wont get many yards seeing as how its not his natural position. 1/13/2006 4:49:49 PM |

i think the most impressive thing by far for the panthers in the first game wasn't that steve smith got 169 yds., it's more impressive that delhomme got the ball into steve's hands 14 times. how does the number 1 defense in the league allow an explosive reciever to get 14 catches. they may have stopped him when it counted but if the bears dont do something about their secondary getting on steve before he catches the ball then eventually steve is gonna break one off for a TD.
i know i'm repeating others here but the first game was decided by turnovers, dont expect the panthers to come in and play sloppy, i dont know what the panthers turnover ratio is in the playoffs since 2003, but i'll bet it's somewhere around 4-1 1/13/2006 5:04:59 PM |

Smith got all those yards because of two reasons
A) The Bears said: We're not gonna let Smith beat us deep, and we're going to let him get his catches and shut down everything else.
It's a smart strategy because really SMith is going to get his catches no matter what you do on defense... no need to weaken your coverage on everyone else just to limit him to 8 catches instead of 10.
B) The Panthers were behind the whole game so we passed often. 1/14/2006 2:14:54 PM |

the whole philosophy of letting smith get his catches is flawed. if you let the most explosive guy in the nfl get the ball in his hands enough then eventually he is going to make a big play. the bears just got lucky that steve didn't break one off during the regular season game. fox is also a play-off genius, dont expect the panthers to play exactly the same as they did in the regular season. fox has some plays up his sleeve that will produce some big plays. 1/14/2006 4:22:42 PM |
