has anyone heard if jamal lewis and the ravens will part ways? Last i heard, they weren't going to franchise him.
if he has enough left in his legs, he would fit the panthers style perfectly, and he would benefit from an actual nfl level passing game. he will probably be pretty cheap too. 2/23/2006 1:27:06 PM |

wow, what a dumb fuck. witherspoon is the core of our defense, he is the only consistant player that shows up to play every game. he may not get outrageous numbers but he has got some serious heart. the dude can play.
ps. fuck alexander, i hate that douche, all he would do in carolina is whine that he should be getting more touches on the ball than steve smith2/23/2006 1:46:30 PM |

Panthers tag Foster as transition (not franchise) player. dont know what to think of this, i love him but i think we need a major upgrade, which of course could still happen...

He was pretty sick last season.
Id much rather have Anderson than a brokedown Jamal Lewis or Deshaun Foster 3/2/2006 8:06:51 AM |

Cutting Buckner made me sad...great player and leader.
Mike Anderson would be a great pick up and Back, perfect fit with his running style. He would not have to be 30 carriws back...we still got Foster 10-15 carries. That would keep Foster fresh and and hopefully healthy for post season....2 back combo would be off da chain...
Proehl back? Awesome, still need a TE...no way to get Vernon from Miami is there?

As far as cutting big name guys and loyal guys go, I think in this situation the etiquette of what is right or not has to be thrown out of the window.. this situation is totally unique in that we probably wont see another shift in talent for a long time if they cant get this deal done today which i dont think they will... Its going to suck for a lot of nice players but its business and im sure they will not consider it personal... Im excited to hear who all gets cut and where everyone will end up... what a great year for TO to get that "big" contract that no one is going to have enough money to pay him or the players they have... 3/2/2006 10:02:29 AM |

Witherspoon is all but gone, someone will throw way too much money at him...and he will Moose...and witherspoon is not the core of the D....obviously the Panthers were thinking of replacing him with Davis last year. He will be missed, but if we can get this DT at least we might not get ran on as much. Witherspoon is going to take the highest offer and be gone...we already lowballed him with a offer less than the often injured Morgan got.
Quote : | "Panthers closing in on Baltimore defensive tackle Kemoetu
By Darin Gantt The Herald (Published March 11‚ 2006)
CHARLOTTE -- One of the Carolina Panthers own free agents is now on the verge of a huge deal. The Panthers could be on the verge of signing a huge player with the savings.
With linebacker Will Witherspoon's bags packed for a string of free agent visits and a rich payday elsewhere, the Panthers were left to fill other holes as free agency started earlier this morning.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney was on the phone with the agent for Ma'ake Kemoeatu shortly after today's 12:01 a.m. start to free agency, in an effort to land the massive Baltimore defensive tackle.
The 27-year-old Kemoeatu would fit a job description the Panthers have been looking to fill for years. At 6-foot-5, 350 pounds, he's the kind of mammoth inside player that would make them better against the run while at the same time providing cover for the uncertain status of Kris Jenkins. Their other huge defensive tackle has missed most of the last two seasons with knee and shoulder injuries, and their defense struggled to replace him.
While since-released Brentson Buckner and Jordan Carstens filled in well at times, they were pushed around (particularly Carstens) in late season games against Dallas and Seattle.
Signing Kemoeatu won't be cheap or easy, as he's expected to command a long-term deal worth around $4 million per season, with at least $5 million up front. Also, a number of teams have him on their list, including cap-rich Cleveland and just-plain-rich Washington. Some around the league have him pigeonholed as a 3-4 nose tackle, but he played well for the Ravens in four-man fronts last year.
It will take him a few days to get here for any potential visits, since he was spending the weekend at his home on the island of Oahu. The native of Tonga played with Panthers right tackle Jordan Gross at Utah, and his former teammate will likely join the recruiting effort today.
Kemoeatu wasn't drafted, and it took him three years to crack the Ravens' starting lineup. But once he did last year, he produced immediately, with 70 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble despite playing in a system that used him mostly as a space-eater.
Witherspoon said this week he expected to take four or five trips once he made it to the market. The Panthers made him an offer, slightly less than what they gave Dan Morgan last summer, but Witherspoon's expected to eclipse that elsewhere.
New Orleans was geared up to make a major run at him, but the Saints were hardly the only ones. Jacksonville, Minnesota and San Francisco were also mentioned among his pursuers.
Safety Marlon McCree's also sorting through several quick offers, though there was late word from the Panthers that they might try to retain him. Same goes with punter Jason Baker, though he isn't expected to make any visits until next week, since he's on a family vacation" |

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/14073050.htm
With Foster's new deal and the restructuring of contracts for four veterans, the Panthers enter free agency with slightly more than $13 million available under the $102 million salary cap. They also are close to re-signing backup quarterback Chris Weinke -- a deal could be announced as early as today. The Panthers restructured the contracts for defensive end Julius Peppers, guard Mike Wahle, cornerback Ken Lucas and safety Mike Minter. By converting base salary into bonus money that will be pro-rated over the life of the contract, the Panthers took Peppers' $14.8 million cap figure to $11.3 million. Minter's dropped from $3.6 million to $2.1 million, Wahle's from $7.3 million to $4.7 million, and Lucas' from $8.78 million to $3.98 million. That might help the chances of re-signing some of their 11 unrestricted free agents, including starters Will Witherspoon, Marlon McCree, Jeff Mitchell, Tutan Reyes, Jason Baker and backup quarterback Chris Weinke. It appears unlikely the Panthers will be able to keep Witherspoon. Perhaps the league's premier free agent linebacker, he is likely to command a high price. He is expected to begin visiting teams as soon as today. McCree, who emerged as a solid starter at strong safety, is likely to be pursued by San Diego, and might have more value on the open market than the Panthers are willing to pay. The Panthers have interest in keeping Mitchell and Reyes, but aren't expected to offer big money. Despite the cap room, it's unlikely the Panthers will make a splash like last year when they signed Wahle and Lucas to huge contracts. Carolina's most glaring needs are at receiver, defensive tackle, running back, backup quarterback and linebacker.
$13 mill under the salary cap ain't too bad, compared to their cap figure just a couple days ago... 3/11/2006 10:55:59 AM |

Re-signing Foster - could go either way, he has explosiveness, but he can't run between the tackles and is a major health risk.
Dropping Buckner and picking up this new DT - good move, this guy sounds like he's young and the real deal, let's just hope it works out and Jenkins can come back 100% for the full season
I'd love to have Witherspoon back, but that won't happen. I would love to get McCree, Mitchell, and Baker back if possible, Reyes would be a solid retain but I don't care about Weinke, haha.
McCree could start at safety and we could move Thomas Davis to starting LB to fill Witherspoon's void, he looked solid last year when we used him against Vick.
About picking up a older bruiser like Mike Anderson. He was solid behind Denver's line, but Denver can put anyone in their backfield and have a solid year(ala Ron Dayne). But I wouldn't mind us giving him a 2-3 year deal to balance out the attack with Foster. But hopefully Shelton or Robertson can step in and be a solid power back to help balance out the attack. 3/11/2006 4:02:15 PM |

i dont know about this new DT, he rode the pine in baltimore for 3 yrs. and then finally had a decent year last year.....that said, i was also skeptical of ken lucas for the amount he was signed for and he turned out to be worth every penny. so i am just going to have faith in fox and believe that he knows what he is getting into and what this guy is capable off in our system. 3/11/2006 6:16:52 PM |
