how am i missing the point?
what IS the point then? I am starting to think you have no point.
having a bible scripture up in your cubicle isnt forcing your beliefs on anyone. If you get uncomfortable because someone has a bible scripture up in their cube YOURE the one with the problem, not them.
I saw some woman in my office with her durka-stan cowl thing on. OMG that shit is forcing her beliefs on me. she shouldnt be allowed to wear it

^hey man, you just summed it up. THAT is the point. YOU may not have a problem with it. WELL GOOD FOR YOU. but alot of people DO have a problem with religion being all up in their face. nobody is gonna care if you read the bible or pray before a meal, but SOME people are going to care if you have religious shit all over your cube. whether you like it or not, when you put it on display like that, you ARE forcing your beliefs on someone. is that so hard to fucking understand? you act like religion isn't a touchy subject.

Its NOT forcing their beliefs on other people. What the fuck? So that muslim woman should have to take off her cover because it makes me uncomfortable at work? Or some jew fella wears his little hat in to work? or some lady has a cross on her necklace? Give me a break.
Hanging shit in YOUR cubicle isnt 'all up in their face'. If that person doesnt talk about their religion and just has that stuff up in their cube then too fucking bad for someone who gets their panties in a wad about it. 2/2/2006 2:10:20 PM |

no, those aren't the same thing. if you're have VERSES that are all "jesus christ is the lord and savior" and shit like that, then YES, you are forcing your beliefs on others. if you want to wear a cross, then that's cool. if you want to have a jesus fish key ring then go right ahead. but I'm just telling you that SOME PEOPLE do not want to see bible verses all over their workplace as it makes them uncomfortable. Religion is about the most sensitive subject there is, so that's why it's a little different than you hanging your nc state poster (which is a retarded comparison anyways).
and I'll ask this again. would it be cool if someone hung a "god is dead" sign in their cube? and if so, do you honestly believe that OTHER people would not have a problem with that? I mean, if that's what makes you feel good, then go for it, right? 2/2/2006 2:15:38 PM |

you dont have to sit there and read the porn for it to bother you.

It would be cool if that person wasnt obviously putting it there to piss other people off.
I suppose there is a middle ground. Being excessive in either direction can be over the top, but having a couple of verses of scripture hanging in YOUR cubicle is a pathetic reason for someone else to get pissed off.2/2/2006 2:21:13 PM |

^like I have said numerous times, it doesn't bother ME, but I can understand how it might bother OTHERS. people are just really sensitive about that kind of stuff man. 2/2/2006 2:23:09 PM |

Expressing your beliefs and forcing your beliefs are two completely separate things.
This coming from a person who would probably laugh at anybody trying to "teach" me about religion and shit. 2/2/2006 2:23:50 PM |

^I agree, but there's a fine line and most people don't know where that line is, so it's better to just leave it at home and/or church. 2/2/2006 2:25:41 PM |

Porn and religion aren't the same thing socially, they aren't the same thing legally, and I'd bet the company has rules against hanging porn.2/2/2006 2:58:02 PM |

^it's a loose comparison, of course, but I see what he's saying. both are touchy subjects. nobody is going to let you hang porn in your cube, but I think what he was getting at is that if your cube is your safe haven, then you can post up anything and nobody has a right to complain or be offended. while that would be great in a perfect world, that's not how it is. and just so you know, I'm not talking about someone who has "john 3:16" on their wall or something. I'm talking about the OVERLY religious folks who go out of their way to let their beleifs be known to everyone in the office. 2/2/2006 3:15:16 PM |

^in what way? if someone overheard her talking about her sex life and it made them feel uncomfortable, then it's the same thing. when I'm at work, I'm at work. I'm not there to be friends with the people I work with. Hell, they don't know shit about my personal life and I like it that way. 2/2/2006 3:18:09 PM |

haha, of course not, but like I said, I know what to say to certain people and what not to say to others. there's alot of things I don't want people knowing about me, and there's alot of shit I don't really care to know about certain people. 2/2/2006 4:54:58 PM |

As far as being at a state agency, thats almost irrelevant. As I said before, if its not direct, and its when they are at the copier (or whatever), get over it. If its direct, as others have said, it has no place in a work environment ... especially a state/government agency.
Btw, Grapehead, you are correct, you are in a lose-lose situation. You are asking people to change their mannerisms and the way they have acted most of their life. Good freaking luck with that. Let me know when you are hanging in the center of the office and people are standing around you with stones. 2/3/2006 5:47:24 AM |

Grapehead, I propose that whenever somthing good happens to you at work, proclaim "ALLAH AKBAR! to all your coworkers.
At least maybe then they would think you're a crazy muslim and leave you alone. 2/3/2006 11:37:43 AM |

I work with a bunch of overly religious people as well. Two of them are actually going to Bible college to become ministers. They like to talk and preach and witness a lot about Jesus. There's a lot of laying on hands going on as well. I just ignore it, although several times they have invited me to come to their church, and I just politely say, "I'll check it out sometime" and keep on going.
There are several people at where I work that are openly gay, and although for the most part the religious peeps are polite about their views, some have talked about the gay guys (not while they were around) about how faggots aren't born that way, how they need deliverance, etc. One girl confronted one of the gay guys and asked him to come to church with her, for God has a better plan for him, according to her. He politely declined as well.
Sometimes the talk can be annoying, sometimes it sounds almost cultish. I just counterbalance it out by talking about all the drinking and debauchery I did over the weekend. 2/3/2006 12:39:15 PM |

I think I'm the only one that caught this
sounds to me like 80% of their religious behavior is tolerable or whatever, but stuff like this that needs to be adressed gets swept under the rug in the name of religion. that is a problem.2/4/2006 12:27:20 AM |
