According to you they are lying when they deny the UNC/NCSU rivalry. I don't think they have any qualms about showing their hatred for Duke though. 2/6/2006 2:00:07 AM |

they're lying or they're stupid.
they care about beating nc state. they care more about duke because, well, they're better than nc state and have been consistently for years.
unc's concern for state is obviously in a slump right now, because they've beaten us for two years straight. if we win at rbc, there will be some fire back next year, trust me.
also: my unc friends only get together for duke/unc and state/unc games. those are the ones they deem important. 2/6/2006 2:08:55 AM |

Okay, first of all, chris6218 is highly full of shit. In fact, a friend of mine works for this school you say would, "be close to criminal" in their reaction to UNC fans on their campus. From him, I've gotten nothing but descriptions of many of the people working there representing Carolina on their cars in the parking lots, lots of Carolina idiots wearing hats and shirts showing what a "true fan" they are, admitted Carolina fans talking shit, etc. In fact, it's not going away any time soon, and will assumably be more noticeable if UNC wins their game tomorrow night.
It's a lot different in the "medical world," where these two schools interact quite often. State, in fact, has more involvement with projects and such with these two schools than any of you morons may think. They perpetually do joint projects with both UNC and Duke, so I find it hilarious that some dilettante is going to come on the Internet, admit he's a Carolina fan (yet goes to State) while thinking he's the all-empowered source on the knowledge of rivalries. You're not, dude.
But you do have a good point.
It's each and every one of our jobs to perpetuate a "rivalry." I personally don't give a shit what they think of us, but I hate them. I do my fair share of making it known that I hate Wal-Mart fans, I hate people that support Carolina yet go to State (in fact, if I had the power, I'd see to it that they couldn't even go to school at State), and just hate their fanbase in general. This is how you perpetuate a rivalry, folks. You don't make some whiny thread where assholes are just gonna show how 20-year-oldish they are...
By the way, Chris, if I saw you on our campus acting the person you claim to be here, it'd probably upset me to the point of saying a little more than "Go to Hell, Carolina," but I wouldn't get physical with you. If you think it'd intimidate me that you're 6'5 and (black? the fuck does that have to do with anything except secure someone's assumptions about Wal-Mart fans?). Chances are that you'd be the one escorted off the campus since you're mentioning stuff like this on the Internet.

Worst thread ever.
It's pretty fucking simple.
To anyone who is not an avid ACC fan or alumni/students of these schools, Duke/Carolina is obviously viewed as a bigger rivalry simply because of the competition and exposure.
To anyone who is an actual Carolina/State student/alumni and an avid fan, they know who the true rival is.

The NC State vs. UNC rivalry was born out of us beating the shit out of them. UNC had a football rivalry with Duke in the first half of the 1900's, and the only way we could get in on the action was to beat them in basketball, so we did.
UNC couldnt handle it, so they built a basketball program...dirty, but they built one...then Smith came and cleaned it up. Basically, it all came from every school in NC not being able to handle losing to the other schools. Which ever teams are ranked highest for the longest period of time will be the biggest rivalry at the time.
p.s. Whoever said that UNC/State will be the biggest rivalry in NC/locally if we start winning again won the thread. They say they're not our rival because they can right now. If they start losing to us consistently again, I guarantee they will shift some attention away from Duke. The last thing they want to do is lose to the red headed step child....they just dont have to think about it right now because they're on a big win streak.
If you think them "saying" they're not our rival actually means it, you're wrong. They know it pisses us off, thats why they do it. Same with Duke/MD. If they have to say it, they know its not true. 2/6/2006 11:43:12 AM |

Carolina fans act like they don't care about State, but they do.
Carolina fans like to think they are "above" State. And Duke fans like to think they are "above" Carolina. 2/6/2006 11:48:31 AM |

That's quite laughable" |
This is a good point. But if somehow Carolina ended up like Duke in that scenario, and their program went on probation and they were sucky... I don't think the rivalry would shift to State-Duke. I would still want to beat the hell out of Carolina, and I think most State fans would agree.
I think the State-UNC rivalry is because they just don't like each other where the Duke-UNC rivalry is mostly just because the competition has been so close.2/6/2006 11:55:34 AM |

i say this with 100% confidence...
NCSU hates UNC UNC hates DUKE DUKE hates pretty much everyone.
but i still firmly believe that the UNC/STATE rivarly is there, and its because of a CLOSER connection academically, and socially. I'm in a joint BME program between us and UNC, and i think everyone can agree that on weekends a lot of us either go party at UNC, or UNC kids come here. There's a lot more social interaction with us two school.
Besides, who says "I'm going to party at Duke tonight dude!" 2/6/2006 12:09:48 PM |

^I would erase that last post, dude. It doesn't make sense. There are more NCSU kids partying in Durham than there are Chapel Hill cats partying in Raleigh. And plus your whole "social interaction" thing doesn't really have anything to do with these rivalries anyway. aimorris made good sense of it here:

Anybody got any pictures of the Chapel Hill cheerleaders dressed up as country bumpkins for us?

of course it does...dukes a private school, and both NCSU and UNC are in the same public system.
theres tons of interaction between us 2/6/2006 12:17:00 PM |

State has been so awful since 1991 that most of the younger people who don't have first-hand experience of State being good and beating UNC-BM don't really give the State/UNC game too much thought, except that "We better not lose to those fruits."
Duke/UNC is bigger now, not only b/c of the hatred, but because of the fact that their games regularly carry so much more weight than bragging rights, ie who will be ranked #1 in the nation and who will win the ACC regular season/tourney.
We start robbing UNC of rankings and ACC titles, the rivalry will heat back up. Until then, bragging rights will only get you so far. 2/6/2006 12:19:36 PM |
